Really liked hearing you say this. Any car that's 20 years old is going to need some love from time to time, that's why we own them. Saab's are true classics that have never been run of the mill "A to B" transport, owning one is a statement of being outside the box in a refined understated way. Looking forward to the new 9-5.

Yes totally agree ! Specifically bought my lime green aero convertible as I have never run with the crowd !

SAABs are worth all the hardships tbh, even though the hardships are pretty rare since they're thankfully super reliable haha

@@DerekChabrow SAAB stands for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget They're extremely reliable if you take care of them well, and perform all the preventative maintenance. If you trash them and treat them like a Honda you won't have a good time.

My Saab Story: After dreaming of one for awhile and driving by the SoCal dealer lot for over a year, I finally bought my '99 9-3 5-spd CV as a CPO in '02 for about $22k. Even then, it was already a classic to me. In 2016, after a few years in the carport off the road, my Saab mechanic there helped me get it ready in just a few weeks for a 4-day x-country drive home for Thanksgiving...In Mass. now, it's garage-kept and still rust-free, restored with help from two Saab mechanics here. Almost 100k mi, I've spent thousand$ in recent years, but it's "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know". (For comparison, my parents' 10-12 y.o. Camrys with low mileage, also garaged, each have at least $1-2k in maintenance and repairs yearly.) So for anyone considering a Saab, know what you're getting, and if you don't know what you're doing, find a trustworthy mechanic who does. Also, watch a lot of YT vids, and find other passionate people. (p.s. Thanks for this channel, Kyle! ;)

Hi Kyle, a big fan of SAABs and your channel here! It's the first time that i left a comment in any of your videos, but i'm following your channel since around a year, and i love SAABs. I appreciate so much for your videos, they are very straightforward and it's nice to see how you take care of them. I definitely would like to own one. Since a year i am trying to buy a 9-5 Aero spec MY2k, but we did not reach an agreement with his owner (yet haha). Unfortunately in my country they are not so common, but i think that is one of the reasons why i also like them. I love my saabs one 2005 arc 93,and a 93 aero 06 convertible. They both run like a dream

Saabs are def not for just anyone. They are def better for people that have extra money to spend or can do some work yourself. They are fantastic cars, especially the older ones. I have a 97 900se turbo vert 5 speed and recently acquired a 94 c900 turbo vert 5 speed. Both great cars great to drive and pretty decent to work on. Saab all the way:) :)

Hey Kyle I just wanted to give you a tip. To spruce up the engine a little bit use some mothers mag and aluminium polish on the manifold heat shield and the metal purge valve return pipe that goes into the cobra pipe. You can get them super shiny with just an old rag!

I use mobil 1 grade 0-40 european formula exclusively, 2003 9-3 convertible ...no issues!!

I just bought a Saab 2008 9-3 Turbo 2.0. I didn’t really consider the negatives on the car (like potential labor and small electrical issues) but I really love the car and how it drives!! I think it’s gonna be worth it!

The 95 aero is a beaut!!! Can’t wait for project to start!!

I run 10-40 Mobile 1. I live in So Cal and travel to Arizona often. The only time i had the dreaded Saab story oil light on is when i purchased 5-30 Mobil 1. Remember synthetic oil is thinner than Dino oil..

Oil: I use any brand 5W30 Dexos. You could go 10W40 & be alrite. Oil pressure: Main & rod bearings (IMHO). Mite shud have worked those when the oil pan was down. Keep Saabing bro. Maury

I was actually scared to watch the video where we just bought a 03 9-3 convertible w/sport package. So I was worried to hear everything that could go wrong, so yay. I know the one you got the motor wasn't working right (I think you said it was blown) so that would lead me to believe the owner or owners probably didn't keep it serviced regularly, luckily the owner of ours bought it new and was always serviced everything looks and works great, it feels like it would last forever. Hopefully that will hold true lol.

I'd say it's worth it! I bought my first Saab at the beginning of July. A 2002 95 aero with 164k miles on it. Paid $1500. So far, it just needed an alignment an an oil change. Beautiful cars and so comfortable.

Happy owner of a 04 9-5 Aero with 130k, it’s a great car and the maintenance is big key to reliability. It’s needed minimum repairs so far. My question is a local shop lifted it up wrong and put a jack under the front subframe when raising and somehow popped the subframe bushings out of place, heard a loud pop sound and they refused to take responsibility. Is subframe bushings a DIY repair?

Take pictures. Take it to another shop. Get a write-up explaining how improper lift placement caused it. Have that shop repair it, then take the 1st to small claims. Why be victimized?

I kid u not people iv allways had modern cars my last one was a vauxhall insignia had nothing but trouble with it 2 months ago the timing belt broke wanted 1700 pound to replace engine so I scraped it round the corner were I live a lady was selling a saab 93 convertible i payed 950 pounds for it on a 06 plate 12 months mot on it full service history I kid u not its the best car iv ever had its in mint condition love it I remember in the early 80 s I was mad on saab turbos and now in 2020 I own one I absolutely love it its done 132 thousand on the clock and does not use a drop of oil just wished id had one all them years ago brilliant brilliant car

in sweden saabs are dirt cheap, you can get a version 1 saab 9-3 för around $600-$800 in farly good condition. and you can find parts in every junkyard

I bought my 2001 9-3 SE convertible for $1300 and have bought about $800 in parts. After it's back together and I put a new set of tires I'll still be way under $3000 for a super Kool car.... And it's topless 😎 If I had all the money I've spent on new cars the last 40 years I could probably buy every used Saab in the country.

I have a 2011 Saab 9-3 Turbo4 and haven't ever had issues other than coils which is normal

Looking at an 08 Saab 9-3 1.9 Aero TTiD with just 115k on it my better sense is telling me to avoid but something about Saab is drawing me in. Any advice on specifics I should look out for on a test drive?

I had a Saab 93 ttid that I bought for £850 with 104k miles on and I abused the hell out of it uot to 243k miles with 60k miles with out any serving and it past the Mot for three years and ran for ages until I donated it to my brother Then bought my 93 ttid which had 34k for 5yrs and put on 134k miles before a silly mistake and drove it through a ford. I have to admit it was a lovely car that drove well and needed some maintenance but most is achievable with the help of ytube, most common issue turbo inlet hose to Manifold fails every 60k + miles if driven hard Then bought the faster 93 aero ttid and have to say it runs the same as the old car but it's faster more fun but costs more to tax and insure Would I buy a Saab, hell yes What other car has a fold out cup holder, air con in the glove box

not necessarily true, Germany gives environmental credits for junking your old'er car for a newer more efficient and eco-friendly vehicle. Also, I think in most EU countries vehicle fees are still based on displacement (motor size) rather than value (VLT).

@@DerekChabrow well, most of these saabs are very efficient and low emission vehicles. And the whole process of recycling your old car, then having to fabricate a new one that is just as efficient as an old saab wastes quite a bit of energy and resources.

@@canadiansaabfreak6530 I would agree with you if you're referring to US standards, but in EU both the standards and vehicles have improved a lot since Saab went bankrupt, almost 10 years ago. But even here, in California many older Saabs have issues passing emissions.

Yikes!, just saw a spot of coolant on my garage floor. Kyle have you done any water pump replacement video or can anyone supply detailed instructions or video as well. Vehicle is 2005 9-5.

i havnt done one! I think @autoautopsy did one on a 9-3..should be similar work.. just remove your passenger engine mount and support engine with block of wood and a jack

I did my 9-5 water pump. Look for the detailed disassembly and reassembly instructions on WIS. The difficult parts are the banjo bolt above the turbo inlet tube (need an offset wrench. Socket will not fit against casting) when you undo the power steering pump zip tie it to the corner. You do NOT need special disconnect tool for line to turbo valve. Just work it off the end. You should have a vice to disassemble the water pump housing so you don't strip the torx screws(i actually did this on the ground applying pressure). I could not remove the small pipe from the block. I left it with the old o-ring. The pipe to the inlet on the water pump is hard to get back in with a new o-ring. I actually put a small amount of grease and forced it in with a mini screw driver. Don't do what i did and remove the whole serp belt. WOW, that's a half hour job getting that back on. I think i used a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet upside down to pull the belt tensioner. You can stick an allen key in to hold it back. If you get the WIS diagrams you do not need a video. Forgot, i only jacked the car to take off plastic cover and drain coolant. Otherwise the rest is a top job with car on ground

@@garytowns5921 just to make it easier for you. When you find Saab WIS online type "coolant pump" in the search box. Then click the 2nd 4 cylinder link. You will get 2 documents click on each. Those are detailed instructions. Click on the arrows you get the diagrams for each step. Print them out. You're good to go.

I recently sold my first car, a black 2000 9-3 Convertible LPT with 110k miles which i had for 3 years. It never broke down and in the end cost me as much as the 7 year old clio of my best friend(with the depreciation of the Renault). I already miss the car a lot but there was to much to do to keep it as a daily driver(which i used it as), so now it's an addition to the collection of a collector(Car No. 56). Would i buy SAABuel again? Yes! Will i might buy another one when my financial situation as a student gets better again? Very likely SAAB GOES STRONG!

I own two a 96 900 convertible and a 2007 9-3 I love saab but they are gone and while it's a shame they're dead and aren't coming back parts are easy and (relatively cheap) to find but newer saabs (like my 07) pretty much require a TECH-2 and unfortunately the closest place from me is an hour away my 9-3 will be heading to car heaven within the next two weeks as it has sat and only driven short distances and stalls out Ill keep my 900 and run it until it blows but I'm mostly moving away from saab I'm jealous over this 9-5 though I want one so bad but I grew up mostly around a Volkswagen family And my wife REALLY likes my 05 4 motion wagon I love saab I wish they didn't die

I have a 2005 Saab 9.3 Aero convertible Lucky in U.K. to have RTJ autos in Stockport to look after mine Love mine ❤️ looks awesome in Lime green My 9.3 is more reliable and better built than a 2005 Toyota Avensis that I had - Toyota started falling apart with rust Have had no problems with mine except ABS pump - replaced with secondhand one £15 Love mine because it is not the same as boring BMW and Audi Very well built ! Great corrosion. Protection 👌 stylish and very safe 🙏 never had problem getting parts for mine - direct from Sweden or local parts factor Think most of Saab problems arise from general garages not understanding them or having Tech 2 to diagnose problems Totally agree about brilliant value for money 💰 my model £32k - purchased for £3k twelve years later 74000 on clock - certainly wouldn’t waste money on financing new car !

I keep asking myself this question. My Viggen just crossed 68,000 miles and I took it out two weekends ago and the ac wasn’t blowing cold. Took it back to tires plus, who recently recharged the system, and found that the compressor, drier and evaporator are bad. So now I am stuck with a worn out suspension, that I want to switch to Koni sports all the way around and replace the upper and lower control and stanchion arms, sway bar links and strut mounts and install my eibach pro kit lowering springs, convertible top motor and lines and probably weather stripping as it leaks need replacing, front bumper needs to be repaired and repainted lightning blue, rear high stop tail light assembly broke, clutch needs a new input bearing and that usually means doing the whole clutch assembly and I don’t have the mechanical ability to do these things and no one competent near me to fix these things right. I don’t trust tires plus anymore, at least my local shop in Naples. I’ve already dumped $4-6k into it in two years and paid $12k for the car. Haha what do I do?

I spent over 4k in repairs on a og saab vert that i payed 3500 for. I really just don't care for the older saabs, I find the newer ones to be much more reliable.

i think the opposite is true. I have both pre and post GM Saabs and those pre-GM will hands down outlast all the post GM. Just give it another year or two and all those 2002 and newer Saabs will all fall into disrepair because the built quality from 2002 to 2010 went steadily down

the quick answer is NO, but if by 'old' he means pre-GM then "yes" if you're keeping it as a collectors item. Anything post-GM (2002 and up) I would just drive until if falls apart and junk it.

Worth it? If you do your own work, yes. But then again I am biased. :)

Only if you have the space to work on it and the patience. Paying someone @ 100/hr can get old fast. There is a community that offers knowledge on what is essentially a zombie car but you have to have tools and skill. First car I've ever owned where I didn't own a repair manual thanks to the internet.

@@KylePancis All my Saab's always ran and drove (besides a crank sensor 15 min job) But the wipers parking in random spots or coming on randomly,random warning lights,interior light coming on in turns,doors unlocking when u lock them,alarm that wouldn't stop even with battery disconnected (It had it's own so I smashed the whole unit to shut it up),key out but it dings like it's still in,antenna won't go up but makes noise, My new Saab has this funny warning check brake lights msg then u turn on the radio and the warning goes away. I'm just gonna drive it but all my Saab's had these clown car problems I just ignored for the most part......

@@thefinalroman Welcome to the world of VW. My Jetta does this. Random lock doors with key in ignition. Random sunroof tilt, driving or parked. My Saab only has random air bag light and brake light(both likely contact issue, have not addressed yet). I did have to replace the ABS module. Easy fix, $25 off junk car

@@thingserik7269 Also my heater controls disintegrated So I tossed it and have to cross wires to get blower output and push pull the cable for hot/cold....

Noooo it's not worth it... Too much trouble no mechanic wants to touch it.
