Is It Safe To Buy A Porsche 911 GT3 Again? I Revisit The GT Product Debate

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Two years ago, I created a video look at the 911 GT marketplace and the strange atmosphere that Porsche had allowed to happen.
The video is here: • The Truth About Buying...
Today, we revisit that topic and ask the question - can you buy a 911 GT3 again, without losing a lot?

Great video! I'm actually pleased to see the arse drop out of the P car market. Investor speculators with no appreciation of the actual value of a GT3 (that being an incredible unfiltered driving experience) just about ruined the market for a period of time. Cars, especially GT cars, are there to be driven and enjoyed, not sat in a garage in some speculative "asset" collection. I achieved a life long dream last year and bought a 991 GT3. It gets tracked and thrashed on B roads regularly. The fact I'll lose money never enters my mind. Porsches should be driven like they were stolen. To hell with cars being treated as non depreciating assets!!!

If you want any sports car, I’d suggest you wait until end of the summer: 1. The fallout of Covid will be truly known by then. Lots of people will sell their toys; they aren’t essential 2. People buy cars, especially sports cars for the summer and sell before winter kicks in. Great time to buy if you can lose a summer of driving 3. It gives you time to be patient and think things through. If it still makes sense and you still want it then go for it. Impulsive purchases are rarely good

Another great, honest video on a car which is purely designed for track and “everyday” use ability. Investing in a car of this nature means your taking the privileges away from the fun and the design aspect, creating higher forecourt prices, the purest is not being able to warrant using the GT cars as Porsche intended. My wife and I have plans to buy one of these cars, bucket list, to enjoy the rest of our lives touring the British isles, sounds more fun than investing doesn’t it? Investors buy houses, it’s a no brainer, GT cars are for the purest not investors🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🥂

I disagree. Due to the current economic situation luxury car dealers are going to struggle to get cars off their lots. There are already decent discounts happening, this will probably go on for some time until this Corona shit is over. So id say if you can afford a car like this now the next few months is a good time to buy, yes the cars will most likely depreciate, but thats always a risk and as Jay already said buying these cars for profit alone doesnt really make sense in the first place.

I do agree with most of Jay's points. I got into a high spec GT3 at the summer of 2018, the car was very boring and harsh to drive on the street, the turbo would have been a much better car. But the gt3 was brilliant when pushed above 70%, the problem is I dont track so I hardly ever get there. Driving the back roads pushing the car above 70% was nerve wrecking coz the limit was so high. I had it up for sale shortly but the 991.2 bubble as described by Jay just started. The market's flooded with gt3s (still is). It took me almost 8 months to finally trade it in for a scuderia, which i absolutely love. It's got presence and very exciting even on the street, and when pushed is a complete beast just like the gt3 was (even though not as refinely engineered). If I havent trade in the gt3, i would have lost another 20k today stuck in a car that's not right for me, so i am very glad i did that. The dealer who got my car ended up selling it at 5k below the trade value (they actually lost 10k with the conditioning they had to do). Looking at high mileage cars today for 90k, that's a steal with a warranty on the engine for another 3-4 years

Good analysis with lots of good points (including buyer type of GT3 vs Turbos). The ratio between 997 C2S and GT3 vs 991 CS and GT3 will have a growing impact: as you said the 991 GTs are not as rare. That’s because they finished the Stuttgart factory upgrade (where all 911s are made, including GTs) and we’re able to make a lot of the GTs. I have a 997.1 C2S a 997 gen 1 GT3 is £70k, which would mean that I’d have to trade up £50k-ish just for the Metzger... No thanks...

Good vid James. It’s worth noting though the engine issues on the 991.1 gt3. I believe Porsche farmed out a 10 year warranty through RAC to cover any blown engines of which there were many but after 10 years, you’re on your own, which is in about 2-3 Yrs time. The better car is the .2

My budget is a far cry from a GT3 but at a significantly lower price point I’ve owned one of Jay’s other cars- a Honda S2000 for over a decade as my daily. I’ve put loads of (reliable) miles on it and could sell it today for more than I bought it for. There’s plenty on offer from many makes at all price points that might not necessarily make money but will preserve capital or mitigate a loss and that’s a good use of funds which can provide smiles too.

Great informative video as usual. Here’s an interesting reference data from Total911 magazine: 3000 991.1 GT3 vs 6000 991.1 GT3 RS worldwide. If you look at their 997 predecessors, their numbers are half and less. 991 is when Porsche opened the manufacturing Gates. Simply Porsche responding to demands?

Great, pragmatic, summary Jay! As a 911 C2S owner who wanted a GT3 and was politely declined by dealer (🙄) I was, am, gutted. I’m not paying +50% for “an idea” tho - that idea being they’re an investment. My 911 is used as a daily, for European jaunts with the family and for Trackdays. I’ve put 33k miles on it in 3 years, and it’s amazing. Oh you’re so right about performance and noise too … I have the standard exhaust. On a 3.0l turbo gen 2. Sacrilege! Some would say. But no, when you put it in Sport mode it makes plenty of glorious noise, including the pops and bangs (why, why, are people so obsessed with them?) Anyway, great summary, really well presented. Got yourself a new sub 👍🏻

Love the new intro, less 80's more classy. I think when the 918 was new, anyone could go in to their Porsche dealer and buy it. That's the way it should be. Any 997/991 GT3 or Touring are my favourite, no RS for me, thank you.

I remember the early 90s when everyone was speculating on sports cars. Jaguar XJ220 needed a £50K deposit prior to production. Shortly afterwards the market collapsed and everyone was trying to get their deposit back. You then found out who the real enthusiasts were as they were still wanting to buy the car.

Thinking of a 991GT3 to actually drive, this has been very helpful. In the next 6 months do you think there is more value in the gen 1 or gen 2? Prices are around 20% lower for gen 1and I wonder if, as a quick but by no means race driver, I would really notice the difference. A Porsche experience instructor I was with last week reckoned the gen 2 was the best car Porsche have made, preferred it to the 992 GT3. I’m not buying for investment and will be buying outright but wouldn’t want to loose more than 20% over a couple of years.

I think one of the main reasons for the huge number of 991 GT3s is the fact that they werent actually that much more expensive than the base models. If my memory serves me correctly, the GT3 started at around 130k here in Germany and the C2S at 110k, with some options that car is on GT3 level when it comes to price. We can safely say that people who buy a Carrera want a sporty car to begin with, so the decision between a C2S with some options and a base GT3 with that much more punch for the same money isnt exactly a difficult one, at least it wouldnt be for me.

Hi Jay, another very informative video, what's your opinion on the 991.1 gt3 engine issues? If you were to buy one would you make sure it was "G engine spec" or wouldn't you be worried due to the 10 year warranty?

“G” means nothing. G6 means everything, which didn’t ship from the factory. People can still blow the G0’s in the 2016’s, they’re just built marginally better to delay it. All you have to do is take the original engine (E, F, G, whatever) to the track a couple times and it’ll fault.

Very nice video but I have some minor criticism: 1: Some graphics would've been useful to visualize the numbers. 2: I didn't really understand what you meant with the 991 GT3 not being rare. Did you mean not rare on the market? That is certainly true as one can see by the numbers you presented. But if you meant rare in terms of production numbers, that is not really the case. There aren't firm numbers on the 991 GT3 yet but first numbers suggest that there are at max twice as much 991 GT3 compared to the 997 GT3. Taking into account that there are many more 991 than 997, in general, we have to ask why are there so many more GT3 for sale? It has to do much more with fluctuation than sales numbers

Transmission Whine is a great title for these diatribe (with the nicest possible connotation) monologue to camera pieces. There is a real issue with subprime car financing, used values are tanking and the GFV manufactures stated are way above actual prices. It’s a buyers market and will be for the foreseeable e.g. And I know this is about Porsche but a 2018 720s with £50k carbon extras, so £300k, sold on collecting cars for £125k. £175k depreciation in 24months. Terrifying...

  • @Beer_Dad1975
    @Beer_Dad19754 жыл бұрын

Part of the problem is the huge dip in reliability with the 991.1. After a bit, the market realised this too and that has caused higher depreciation - additionally (at least in my local market) the dealership customer care took a nosedive too, again this is not going to help depreciation. Sure this impacts halo cars less, but it still affects them. I can only presume the VAG overlords insisting on cost cutting and margin increases in their race to the bottom are to blame.

What I'm curious about is since they are testing the 992 GT3 right now, once the new GT3 is released what will happen to the 991.1 GT3 prices? How much did 997 GT3 prices dip when the 991.1 GT3 came out? We are at that point right now were I think they are still going to go down. Here in the US you can find 991.1 GT3s at around 100-110k. Is this going to be the price for those early GT3 cars moving forward or will they dip under 100k? I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a dot one going for 112k, but not sure if I should wait a little bit longer. Love the video FYI

In Canada, for a 2016 to 2018 GT3, you are looking at a price between $180,000 to $200,000. Around £115,000 I think? That is a hell of a lot of money. I think I have seen one in my life. There are more and more exotics showing up here. Ferraris and even a McLaren, but very few GT3's.

I was a Porsche salesman in Sydney when the first 996 GT3 was launched, well actually it was "rumoured" rather than "launched". I got a hold of a file that was 40 pages typed on plain A4 paper detailing the specification. It was about 15% more money than the plain Carrera. I rang 3 of my 911 customers and told them to get to the showroom ASAP. All 3 ordered a car and the next week there were none left for Australia ever. My customers couldnt thank me enough. One tipped me an air fare to London! They were amazingly hard core compared to a Carrera, well priced and rare. That made them investible. When "the herd" run for it and they are overpriced they are not investible. Incredible that they (996) are now as a used car 4 times the price of a plain Carrera that was only 15% cheaper when new. The change of ownership to VW has in my view also led to a silly and confusing proliferation of "special editions" which are just VW group profiteering to the long term detriment of the brand.
