Lilys approach to this at the start did make me uncomfortable. Supporting the tabu culture only endorses the growth of social divide and racist mindsets. Feels weird that she tried to stop Toast from doing this. I get it from a content creator perspective, she did not want him to get in trouble, she is a nice person. It's a term to unify American nationality as intended by the spirit of the constitution more than anything. The world is moving towards that direction, melting pot, due to technology and the free flow of information. Nation states are dumb.

If i were to play the devils advocate. He is not actually asking for people nationality but rather making a game show out of it which i guess could be offensive to other peoples. I personally don't think there really is anything racist about showing or asking about ones races. I think of racism just as an act of treating someone different because of their race. Nothing wrong with admitting that everyone is different in some way. It's just wrong to treat someone differently because they are different.

@@malwared6293 there are quite subtle differences. nepalis tend to look more east asian. pakistanis and indians have different nose types. it sounds weird, hut once you notice it, you can tell. eyes and jawlines are another difference between them. not all the time tho, all three share similar genes. its just something you pick up on

​@@bebes444 Thank you! Literally Pakistan and India have so many ethnic groups, and only share one- Punjabis. Saying it's the "same" ironically erases the diversity for BOTH countries. There are surprisingly huge differences between the nationalities that non-South Asians have mentioned to my family and me throughout our lives. Especially behavioral and social.

This isn't random. His voice is making it seem like he's talking about it on a whim. However, he's raising a valid important issue. People condescend, ignore the existences of asians compared to that of other races, this little "guess that (asian) race" game allows his viewership to teach them what different Oriental ethnicities look like, if there are indeed recognizable differences statistically. This can put more of a stopper in non-orientals dismissing the existence of orientals more than other ethnicities are dismissed. Kudos to Toast

Cancel Culture in a nutshell. What I always think about those situations on social media is: If you just read what someone posts, or just hear what someone sais, and only take the statement, thats what you should react to. Or to be blunt: if you jump to a negative conclusion and blame someone for it, who really is the bad person? The person who didn`t actually say it, or the person that just interprets something in the worst way possible to attack? If you start to read between lines, it is very likely you don`t hit the mark. While it is possible that someone meant it, I think it is more likely that you are wrong. And it is very sad to see how many people actually think everyone is such a negative person, instead of taking that person at face value.

@@Rakshiir Well normally i wouldn't mind people canceling someone racist but the problem nowadays is that people just do it on everyone without research even for out of context stuff, i find what toast does here a good thing, its a topic on asians and it will connect the viewers with them and make us more familiar with them as its interesting to learn about different cultures or races, the only thing annoying me is people call everything racist even to the reference of another race, like you don't fix racism by just dodging talking about other races i believe, how i view it i see every race normally and ofc im interested as a person but not everyone has the same view even tho at the end we are all humans, i believe if you gonna cancel someone it would be more realistic to do it based on character and decisions rather than race since we are all different regardless of our race.

@@Exknight2 I do mind throwing buzzwords around if it is not justified. If you read in a subtext something that makes you think thats justified? You are heading on to thin ice. I think calling someone out is important IF it is clear thats the case. If you can't be sure, I`d say don`t do it. Or else we get into a situation where these words are not taken serious anymore. Like the kid that cried wolf. At some point people start to ignore it - and if it gets ignored when it is really important? The thing is: I think most people in this world aren`t really racist. Some people might be clumsy, or aren't informed and say something stupid, but don`t intend to hurt or don`t even know any better. I'm not saying this is okay, but I`m saying thats what I think happens. To improve this, you NEED to talk about different people, cultures, inform more. With positivity we propably get to more people than with plain toxicity like many do right now. Take me for example. I am from germany. We are reduced to a certain time in our history that was terrible and called names alot - although most people today here in this country had nothing to do with that time period. As if we are somehow supposed to pay for crimes we didn't commit. We for sure need to learn from such terrible mistakes, and certainly should not forget it happened - but being reduced to it today is not a fun thing. And while it is not fun to do it, I'd rather tell people how our past affected us in school, how most people here think being called a "nazi" is actually a very big insult in itself. I could also just go ahead and call them idiots, or biggots, or whatever. But that would not improve anything. And yeah, I think Tost is not wrong. I do get Lily's reaction to said topic just because cancel culture is so dangerous, but the basic idea isn't bad. Show people that there are differences. Let those who want learn.

At the end it all comes up to the individual, you can be white, black or asian etc. and do good or mess up, its all to the person, some people are racists, it doesn't have to do with the colour or race but their character and how they deal with situations and im not talking about someone that had a slip and is normal(?)/neutral+chill, im talking about the people that actively try to make other seem inferior or trashtalk/doing harm on whatever way they can based on race, and like i said you have these people on every race, its an individual problem. About cancel culture i think its stupid cause its targeted to everyone and in most cases we see it being used wrongfully but i would stand neutral anyways, since its misused most of the times. If you think someone is wrong you can just tell him, "hey dude that's a bad take cause of this and that...imo" P.s. when i say neutral/chill etc. im reffering to people that haven't discussed the topic and haven't thought about it, a person that will discuss things related to something is a person that wants to learn, through communication we exchange information and opinions since thousands of years and well you don't have to agree with everyone but you can certainly learn stuff and who knows maybe you change your opinion, maybe you are wrong or maybe you are right but you don't lose anything from having discussions with other people.

I unironically love Toast's edgy humor, cause it's just the perfect type of edgy without it being actually offensive. People who are offended by his humor really don't have the the proper mental capacity to watch his content; Whether because they are still too young to properly process it, or because they just will never have the necessary amount to do so. That isn't even an edgy take, I don't even think that Toast was being edgy here, people just assume based on the get-go on their assumptions on what is insensitive. The peak of edgy humor is FilthyFrank, where the jokes are incredibly offensive yet so clever and bizarre that you can't help but laugh at it. Especially with this whole shtick about Dave Chapelle, I personally don't find him that funny, but I think _so many_ people misunderstood the whole point of Closer. So many people assume he's a feminist and has those transphobic ideologies _now_ instead of actually paying attention - That was his _past,_ he was talking about his experiences and growth in understanding the LGTBQ+ community after being verbally harassed on the Internet and in person by either allies or those in the community, and he ended the session talking about a genuine time where he came to understand someone actually trans and paying his respect for her. He ended the session admitting that he learnt and yet people missed that part so bad. And certain jokes he has there, like his take on surgical vaginas, isn't even wrong. I know trans people themselves that agree that the surgeries aren't as 'magical' as the community makes it out to be. He executes his jokes offensively, but when the takes itself are actually true then why make a big deal out of the jokes? Individual feelings shouldn't ruin the source material, and if you end up doing so, you're just reenacting what corrupt dictators do when something hurts their images - They berate and censor. Just, the irony of cancel culture. It's practically a culture that allows individuals to be dictators.

I feel like we should be teaching people how to tell the difference between nationalities. It is not inherently racist to be wrong about an Asian's geographical ancestry, it is mostly just ignorant. If we all were taught to know the differences the ignorance would drop significantly.

No the issue comes from guessing a nationality. Don't assume anything if someone wants to share that with you than that is cool don't try to guess shit. Especially if they have no accent. My wife is Filipina and I have spent a lot of time in Manila. When I meet someone who clearly has a Filipino accent in America I will usually ask but that is about it.

It is white cancel culture that has made people BELIEVE it is automatically racist but it isn't. Racism needs to come from a place of hate, otherwise it is prejudice or ignorance. Screaming at non-Asians for asking questions or trying to learn IS rather racist because it assumes the white person is automatically being racist. Shutting down communication is the WORST way to handle race relations. Also: let me ask you this: is it fine to guess/assume a white person's Nationality? We actually DO all look alike, from Russia to Germany to Canada to the US it can be impossible to guess without a clear accent and even then it is not fool proof. Should we treat every race differently? THAT is racism!

I was in a Discord server a while ago, just because it was fun to watch them try and commit mental gymnastics to try and make any sense, and someone got called racist because they knew the, like, national Japanese tree or however you would word it, and he got called racist because he wasn't Japanese. So, yeah, there are some people who somehow believe that learning about another culture makes you racist against that culture. The world is pretty weird, and a lot of people just say whatever just to bring down other people with stuff like this.

Brush half the world's population under a single generalizing comb. (2) - All Asians have different distinctive physical tells inherent to their nationality. The bridge of the nose, the slant of the eyes, the sharpness of the haw. This is advanced racism to some due to the belief that people are are all the same and equal irrespective of birthplace and ancestry, and trying to say that one kind of Asian is different from another kind of Asian is inherently exclusive in nature and thus racist.

If youre growing up in a country like poland where there is like 98% central europeans, youll be able to tell those faces apart pretty well, but other ethnicities not so much. this is literally going every direction. ive seen a documentary on this where theyve showed a bunch of kenyans pictures of like germans, french, brits and swedes and they were laughing their asses off becuase to them, they all looked alike. ngl this is really interesting

I grew up in an Asia country and to me Asian people look very different. On the other hand, I think most of American and European (Caucasian) look alike. It is hard to even tell either someone is an american or european because I rarely see one irl so I can't tell the difference.

In elementary school, we had a single asian in our class, he was chinese. Between second and third grade, a vietnamese school shut down and all the students moved to our school, and while initially i had a really hard time telling them apart, i learned after a year or so.

As soon as race is involved, everyone gets so sensitive and on edge. This is 100% harmless, and if his own fans are willingly sending in photos for it, than what’s the problem? People are afraid to make potentially hilarious content because of this stuff man. Keep pushing the line, toast.

I've come to realize a lot of yt people like being the white night saviors. Like I'd go into a comment section of a video or post and you see a bunch of yt people acting all offended yelling racism while the people they are crying racism for are honestly vibing and enjoying the content. I'm yt myself, like my ancestors basically all come from really yt predominant countries. I personally look at how the possible "victims" are going with it and offer back up if needed. I just love how logical and real you are. Some times people needs to stop over reacting, and actually put things into different perspective and think. THINK PEOPLE THINK.

In my experience living in Japan, I could tell the difference between Koreans, Chinese and Mongolian exchange students who were around me all the time. Outside of that it gets way more difficult though, places like Malaysia have Malaysians and Malay people which can have broad ethnic origins so it can be difficult to tell their nationality.

"something mean" is pretty subjective. Saying "those people are the worst" is pretty easy to spot, but what about "those are small eyes"? If the eyes are small, it's factual and can be an important part of determining someone's country of origin. But it is stating something that is immutable, pointing out a difference, and assigning importance to that difference. I don't think that is mean, but there are plenty of people I have interacted with that would think that is mean.

Can't be racist if you hate every race equally even your own race

I honestly love the idea, it’s a similar case to Latinos, people assume we’re all from Mexico but there’s MANY different places that Latinos are from. For me this serves as a learning opportunity.

I like how I watched like 5 streamers from twitch and now youtube has recommended such polished scenes from streams for me, this is kind of amazing. I love this and the fact someone's willing to take a stand vs the crazy people with nothing better to do than to accuse people of being what they are repressing. lol

Having lived in Japan for 20 years, I've learned that lots of Japanese people think all Westerners look alike, too. It's just about exposure. If you haven't seen a lot of a certain group of people from various countries, you just don't have enough experience to pick up on the patterns.

Because they do lol. Im from EU and north of EU looks the same, cant tell who is from Sweden and who is from Norway, South is the same (Balkans) all look the same. South Americans no way to tell who is from Brasil and who is from like Argentina. Borders don't give you unique look lol

So true, I'm south asian and lived in the middle east. I was the only south Asian in my class and when another south Asian student joined the class, everyone couldnt believe we weren't sisters. And to me, we looked nothing alike lol

As someone half Vietnamese half Guatemalan I think white sjws are so much more sensitive than any asian person ive seen. My mom (Vietnamese) ALWAYS tries to guess where another asian person is from. Its a conversation starter, it brings a light to your heratige and for you to have the chance to share your culture. It is NOT racist to ask/try to guess where someone is from!

its so interesting basically seeing a video being created from the first idea to working out the problems in format, where you would get the pictures, what to call it etc.

As someone who was “canceled” within my own college community, based on an out of context screen shot, and people jumping to conclusions. I appreciate Toast tackling the conversation of cancel culture with such confidence. I loved that you discussed how you bounced back better than ever, even after that traumatizing experience. All the contrary, I'm interested in you and your family. I want to hear the story of how your grandparents came all the way from China to live here (and why leave your country) and the things they saw and lived through. Cultural differences. And I hate that "cancel culture" only takes into account their interpretation of the world. Rather than being inclusive, they're all the contrary. One of the best videos Toast has ever made. Lily hilariously adds the perfect counter balance to Toast and Michael is all for chaos, which is amazing. Also, the fact that he doesn’t even end up playing the game but just has a deep philosophical conversation about the issues with it all as well as cancel culture is incredible. The tension build up of “will he play it or won’t he?” And then you’re 15mins in and listening to wonderfully logical ideas and perspectives.. perfect video. Well done man.

“Guess that European nationality” wouldn’t be racist then this isn’t either. My opinion is simple: as long as you don’t (actively) offend a race it is not racist. Yes you are guessing Asians based on their looks and characterizing certain looks of people but that’s because it is a truth. Not all Asians look the same and people from a certain country will often look different because of evolution.

The whole argument aside, I think it's necessary that we tackle these questions up front rather than automatically dismissing someone that posed the idea. Even if it's offensive, having conversations about these topics makes it so that the internet isn't as toxic as it already is.

The internet is a funny place, they want to be “inclusive” but when somebody is new and wants to learn they’ll fail, but the internet doesn’t allow people to fail or make mistakes. So yeah either you’re perfect or you’re cancelled. I don’t know the differences from a lot of countries, the internet expects me to ask everybody where they’re from so I can know if I can talk to them in x language since I like to learn different languages. It’s like people want to fight over anything just to prove that they’re “always right” or just to win an argument :/

@@Pac0110 Whelp, NGL, you hit the upon the core of it. Yup, people use the internet to indulge themselves in ways they wouldn’t usually in person. There’s also the related point that things tend to escalate when tone and body language are thrown out the window. Which internet text communication almost always does. It also can impose many other limitations we don’t often think about. It’s easier to speak when tired, as a screen can keep you awake at night, and that person is going to be less logical and more emotional. There’s a legitimate literacy barrier … even if you can type just fine, that doesn’t mean you can be as coherent in words as opposed to speach. It’s harder to have a dialogue -on KZread, you need longer posts - because you’re not just talking TO one person. And it’s harder to have a back and forth … it can take days to converse over something that could take 10 minutes … and unlike letters, you can legitimately respond after the person has gone onto a completely different point. IMHO, that’s why bullet point discussions, where each side numbers each point and plays ping-pong, are a good format on KZread. I’d also ask to move over to say discord, but because KZread doesn’t have a PM system that’s hard to execute without inviting others. So the chat gets clogged when more than a handful of people want to chat. This isn’t a lecture hall. Heck, even there, it’s way easier for two people to meet up after. It shouldn’t be, but more importantly, those systems aren’t just conveniences, they shape discourse as a whole. Have you EVER become friends with a commenter you like? It’s near impossible unless you want to DOX yourself, and all it would take is a PM system. By comparison, content creators can have more engaging dialogues and make friend with ever knowing each other’s identity. So say, Toast might entirely agree with comments he criticized, but because they were forced to write a shorter reply so they could be relevant to the discussion, they oversimplified. Because of the way chat works, it’s difficult for Toast to continue that conversation without derailing his plans for a coherent video. Finally, there are simply a whole lot more people nowadays looking for validation in putting other people down. That’s a whole different can of worms. I’m with Toast. Ignore those people. They’re never going to be happy, and will never articulate what you have done wrong so you can improve, or even have a dialogue. As a GM, I would just kick those people. If they don’t respect me, then my respect for them is going to be limited to separating us. Since in this medium, it’s almost impossible to be diplomatic, or even apologize in a genuine way, unless you both get on a video or something. On that note, I don’t think ironic content regarding topics like this should be presented in this format. Due to its limitations. That, and it’s easier for people to opt out. Basically, if I’ve warned people ahead of time, given them chance to leave, and clearly pointed out that this is not a justification, and not chosen to speak in a space with the intent to force them out … it’s like Toast said. It’s on the people looking at the sun without even sunglasses on, and continuing to do it.

I would love so much to have a talk with Toast. The third season of the podcast is wonderful, and I love the way he eeks out certain details from guests. He knows how to adapt to different styles of conversation. I guess you could call that charismatic and intelligent. He doesn't just have the sense, he can speak enough to the subject to get the speaker to share more. He knows how to play the role of the audience member. He's honestly inspiring.

Racism, to me, requires two components. Malicious intent of the offender, and the negative experience of the receiver. If one of the two criterias are not met, who cares. I feel a lot of people are already just OK in deeming people racist if they meet the second component (offending, harming, etc.). If we allow accidents to happen in other contexts like accidentally bumping into people, intent matters. So it should also apply here too. I had people guess that I was Korean before but it was clear there was no malintent. Even if it offended me (it didn't), I can at least recognize that they meant no harm.

And imo, people like lily and all toast's fans that say "This can be offensive" are enabling that way of thinking. And imo it's bad because talking about race in a light and casual way should be normalize more so we know how to speak up against racism.

I mean, not really. You don't have to have a malicious intent. If you said something like, "You're one of the good ones," in reference to their race isn't necessarily malicious, because you are somewhat trying to compliment them, but your own racist ideas are just so implanted into their brain that they refuse to make the connection that this guy of x race does good thing, maybe x race isn't so bad, rather they decide x race is awful, but this guy isn't as bad. While I do believe that asking for someone's race shouldn't be an issue, because it can just simply be hard to tell, especially with mixed people, so, in this case, it would fall under those two criteria. However, I don't think it really fits to try and simplify what is and isn't racist to just two points.

I should have clarified that. If someone told me that I'm one of the good Chinese because of my English, I am sure not going to take that quietly. But I don't think I am ready to declare him a racist yet. It's so simplistic that it ignores the nuance between innocent ignorance or sincere malice. Like I am super with what the left regards as red flags. I just am hesitant to use the simplistic term as it ignores all nuance and immediately marks the offender without discourse. We all know that if you mark someone as a label, they immediately go onto the defensive and destroys discourse.

As a Chinese living in Asia, I have the right to decide if this is racist or not: No, in this context, it's not. People need to stop being offended over trivial things or being offended for others. I find Asian stereotypes funny because some of them are so absurd but sometimes even relatable, like "Chinese people do nothing but study all day". I personally suck at math so badly that I want to die, but I can see that the people around me do work hard and do get excellent grades. As long as it's not straight-up harming people you don't have to take it seriously.

I think the bigger point is that you actually don't have a say in it. Racism has a definition already and Twitter likes to distort it. I know Lily is playing into it, but it really is such an annoying thing thanks to PR people. I'm white, but I wouldn't expect Asians to guess what my heritage is and vice versa unless you're familiar with the subtle differences/live outside of the area of origin.

Well if I ask you "where are you from?" that doesn't carry a negative connotation. If I guess "are you German?" that also doesn't carry an opinion about you, UNLESS you think it does. "Are you Korean?" is just a descriptive sentence. If you believe it is racist it's because you are the one who is adscribing the descriptive sentence a judgment. "Why is your house so small?" does carry a judgment, and is biased.

One of the things that bothers me about cancel culture is something you touched on with the Dave Chappelle thing, namely that engaging with problematic content *at all* is suddenly grounds for cancellation. This leaves absolutely no room for critical engagement. Everyone is supposed to blindly follow the rules of what has been cancelled, without ever forming their own opinion on those things. This also spreads misinformation when things are taken out of context, blasted on Twitter, and all everyone knows is the 5 second clip that was shared.

The worst thing is that the rule is always "Stay in your lane, adhere to your designated stereotypes or its cultural appropriation". I miss the 90s, everyone just kind of did whatever and was cool about it.

true, and a lot of people just blindly attack because they can't think critically about themselves because they villanize the "cancellable things" so much that they forget that they also "live in a society" and most likely partake in them too. like we ALL have some internalized racism or misoginy

@@hungrycrab3297 I think the funny thing is when you talk about something like "interracial marriage" approval, in your mind it means like 99% of white people were opposed, when the reality is that it's the same for every culture. But yeah, there weren't people like you back then whining about random polling data and demanding more progress. Instead, what happened most of the time was that the younger couples just did it anyway and their parents dealt. And that's why the 90s were a LOT better than now. Like you're not wrong, the lack of social media idiocy and white savior Karens throwing fits online, and miserable toxic people who call themselves "activists", did mean the world was a much better place.

I think toast is very thoughtful and logical, always enjoy listening.

Personally As a half Southeast Asian and half East Asian I'm completely ok with this rather than finding this racist I think it's a very fun concept Most of us asians are pretty thick skin as long as you don't get it too personal we don't really care all that much

There's nothing wrong with guessing someone's nationality or race. I don't know why people freak out over it.

I think the only valid counterargument vs this idea is if it turns out Toast & co can't really differentiate between Chinese, Japanese & Korean, and someone will go "See, the Asians can't tell each other apart. That's proof that all Asians look the same". But then again, that kinda implies you're not doing it to prevent racists from having more ammunition. In which case, they were always gonna be racist, so that shouldn't affect whether or not you should do something.

@@awijaya2116 The fact that it is even expected to guess the country correctly is absured to me. In the current world, genes are not pure. People migrate all the time. You literally CANNOT tell people of certain regions apart because everyone has mixed up genes and that's ok.

@@pnarimani6055 Thats actually why China, Korea and Japan are pretty good starter nations to try this with. All three have a majority ethnicity that holds a supermajority of their population. You could also do this with Eastern European countries to some extent. But agreed for all of the new world countries, as well as all the sub Saharan African countries. Those are too mixed to be able to realistically guess.

Honestly so greatful that Toast is a content creator, he is such a breath of fresh air, allowing people to think of whether to agree with him rather than just shoving it down peoples throats

I appreciate your humor, I have the same kind of humor. Helps me cope with a lot of BS in my life. But it's nice to have an influencer that I genuinely vibe humor wise with and doesn't curb it.

Whenever I hear toast talk I always get reminded how much of a great guy he is

One of the things I really appreciate about Toast is how he thinks critically about issues and boundaries and doesn't try to kowtow to the Twitter mobs. But not just that, he doesn't try to be crass and overly offensive just for the sake of it either; he has his own lines, stands behind what he believes, and can articulate why he does what he does while also taking into consideration people's feelings towards it and any relevant cultural context.

Being asian myself, I think this is a great idea.

It would be nice if you went ahead with this actually, but include the whole of Asia. Now the participants for the game show would be your non-Asian friends, and they need to answer two questions (a point each) per viewer-submitted photo: 1.) Are they Asian or not? 2.) Which country are they from? This way, you might be able to test their geographical knowledge and really challenge the stereotype as a whole. A lot of people sometimes forget just how BIG Asia actually is. For example, imagine your participants seeing a photo of an Indian, so they correctly guessed the nationality but they said that the subject wasn't Asian.

India itself is very diverse. There are millions of northeastern Indians who look more like south east Asians

Only problem with that is a non Asian person puts themselves in a situation to receive much more backlash than an Asian person whilst guessing nationality. My example while yet crude would be African Americans with the N word. While looked at as a word they made their own, any other race, namely Europeans/white Americans would get buried for such language. Which I don't disagree with in any manor and is why I think at least if not all, majority of judges should be Asian. I don't think it's to the same degree necessarily, but I hope you understand the POV I'm proposing. Personally I see base racism as a give/ take type deal needing to be acknowledged or purposefully offensive to be effective. Systematic racism is a different beast, but I won't get into that.

Thats a cool idea. I think people should embrace the differences between different races and acknowledge those differences as they won't vanish by ignoring it.

Yeah, making it the basis for denying basic human rights or for the purpose of partiality and such is where the line should actually be drawn.

This would be basically just geoguessr, but for people. I would love to watch a show like this. Sounds very educational and fun.

It's racist to think that an asian trying to guess whether someone is korean, chinese, philipphine or japanese is racist, but it would not be racist if an European guy was trying to guess whether someone is Italian, spanish, france, german, russian, etc, etc..

Non-asians assume what ethnicity I am (mainly by saying nei hao when I'm Korean) and people almost never assume what ethnicity white people are (at least in the US). Let's not be purposefully dense about racial tensions in the west...

I don't even understand why people are so worked up with this. It's just genuine harmless fun.

Play the game, I used to play "Guess the Nation" with a Somalian guy, Chinese woman, Sri Lankan guy, Brazilian guy, Vietnamese guy, Pakistani woman, and myself being the only white guy. It was hella fun. Where I am at its a lot of guessing Norwegian vs Swedish vs German, Somalian or not, Vietnamese vs Korean vs Japanese, Puerto Rican vs Mexican vs Venezuelan, and lastly Iranian or not. Opening the game to a larger pool of possibilities (taking from a world audience, at minimum national audience) but refining your scope to just Asians sound overall harder than what we were doing. Also, we asked politely if we could take a guess and talked over why we thought what we thought.

Man the internet is a messy place an open forum where anyone can speak up and it's wild. some people make it their whole life and get offended and hurt by even the topics that could possibly be incendiary and so it makes it so hard for public figures toake jokes or even try and have actual conversation on those topics. We are working so hard to try and fix what has historically been broken or neglected but actively fighting ourselves in the process in fear of being label as the monsters that we think we are fighting...

I think using “ethnicity” is a bit better/more correct here than using “nationality” or asking “what country are you from”! Bc nationality refers to citizenship and isn’t really something you can guess based on appearances. 🤔 For example, my nationality is American but my ethnicity is Japanese. (Well, unless toast was asking for only Asian national viewers to participate.)

Semantics. It matters more what people are trying to say than the strict boundaries you apply to these words. Not all people refer to these words with the specificity of meaning you impart onto them.

@@jacobnussbaum2309 Mm, that’s definitely a valuable take that I agree with for the most part. However, for this particular scenario I think the distinction is important to note (albeit specifically as it applies within America). For example, asking an Asian person in America, “what is you nationality” or “where are you from”, somewhat perpetuates Asian exoticism as it suggests that that person must be from elsewhere. But, in the end, you are right in that one’s intentions behind their words is the most important! I just wanted to say what I thought was the best way to phrase the question to be the least harmful, because he was asking the viewers how we felt about the game. :) Sorry if it came off that way, but I’m not trying to police words and I know Toast didn’t mean any harm, just wanted to leave a comment noting the personal distinction I have.

I agree. And having recently watched a video from Dr. K... well... I kinda already was partially aware of this before, but basically the jist of it was that the over-confident, biggeted, woke or whatever types, get their beliefs reinforced by people disagreeing with their beliefs and not responding adequately to when they share experiences of what was evidently harassment/what they perceived as harassment. (I definitely agree with the sentiment of this video, as "insensitive" as it may be, and believe, well... people should be allowed to think as individuals and act as individuals without having to get hurt over it, and most importantly, be allowed to have discussions where they aren't called outright as normies or some other label and left alone for their minds to become overwhelmed and isolated - leading to them looking for people who might happen to share their beliefs because the other party didn't give them respect, empathy, or what have you... I guess also I read up on a little known visual novel on the side aswell, Chaos; Child... So basically, some people feel really strongly about the group they belong to because of one group having perceived righteousness over the other in a particular field of knowledge, skill or again, what have you...) Side note; I find that not all people look the same, and that there are differences, but looking from a distance, details tend to blur together as the brain often only picks up differences in facial features in those you've spent a long time around, or you've just been studying human proportions...? Yup. Another side note; The feeling of righteousness or over-confidence in your information over other peoples, is not a bad thing on its own, what is a bad thing, is the lack of communication between the many groups we have now - and sure, perhaps we have too many groups, although I think that forcibly making people belong to only one group like "belonging to the global empire" or some shit like that, would repress the freedom of choosing where you want to belong and also limit us competitively and creatively in the ways we're free to express ourselves(whether it be politically, emotionally, inquisitively and so on I suppose). ANOTHERER side note; This of course, is a long winded way of saying "You can judge people and everything else around you freely", you just have to keep things clear and coherent, and help people out when they misinterpret what you say... or if they are too scared to say anything because they're massive introverts... I could probably go on and on about having solid communication when it comes to making sure people are on the same page about whether or not someones being offensive, joking, just making an observation, a mix of all of the above, and I don't have a word for this...

I feel like most people don’t even get offended by some things, they just start trying to cancel the creator to be with the trend.

Definition of racism: hate or discrimination based on one’s nationality or race. The word doesn’t mean anything anymore.

To join into the conversation, a bit late admittedly, I feel the "game show" itself is a wonderful idea. The ideology behind is great. Combatting stereotypes by proving they are wrong being the goal is great! Sure darker humor could be involved if it goes the opposite way, a part of the content that would be produced; HOWEVER, "Guess that Asian!" is.....not the best name for it. It makes the idea COME OFF as insensitive when in reality, that is not the intent. Workshopping some better names would be the ideal solution to said....."game" (when in reality I would view it as more of an experiment really...I mean considering it is seeing if people, whoever involved, can test to see if stereotypes have any merit, though in my opinion and experience I dont think they do)

I thought by now everyone had realised that getting cancelled just means getting shouted at by weird angry people on Twitter and that it doesn't really have any effect on your life or the world at all. And yes, there definitely needs to be way more open conversation than people just shouting each other down because the topic makes them feel uncomfortable.

Well, thats not entirely true. We’ve seen cancellations cause people to lose their jobs or sponsorships or in this case, get banned off twitch for being “racist” if people shout at twitch about it enough, twitch would be force to do something. In other cases it can even ruin your chances at future endeavors as your past cancellation will stain your portfolio. So, they can affect you and those around you. No one wants to interact with a racist who got cancelled.

As much as cancelling the person does, its not the scariest part. It's the effect on potential sponsorships and what not that'll hurt your bottomline thats scary. In which case twittards are rabid dogs that bark up any tree related to you and any future attempts companies try to make sponsor deals as companies (not all) care about their image to some degree.

Offlinetv and the members themselves have sponsors that prefer them to have positive image because they believe it would reflect the sponsor. Many people who have been canceled have lost their sponsors and therefore lost a lot of money. I can understand where Lily is coming from as she's one of the more outgoing popular members and possibly has a lot of brand deals and sponsors under her belt

ok, you guys are right, let me rephrase that. are corporates and potential sponsors really still scared of creators getting cancelled? I thought by now everyone had realised that getting cancelled just means getting shouted at by weird angry people on Twitter and that it doesn't really have any effect on your life or the world at all. also, cancel culture is just modern-day witch hunts. It's disgusting.

I think it would be fine, not to mention that every time I get into conversation the question of what kind of Asian are you usually comes up and when I say Korean the follow up question is north or south. The only people that are usually confident and ask if I'm Korean are other Asians.
