It's one of the byproducts of refining petroleum. It makes two-thirds of clothing, packaging for foods, large amounts of furniture, etc. You can't devote all this land for plants and trees, and still have enough land devoted to food to feed all the people on this overpopulated planet. Plastic reducing male fertility is a bonus, because there are too many people, causing too many problems, and experiencing too much suffering. Nothing less than a _final solution_ to suffering is needed for this whole planet, me included. It will be painful, but you can't make omelettes without breaking some eggs. 😜

My Omie (grandma) drank the big Route 66 cups and would reuse them. Sometimes drinking out of them multiple times and just refilling it with ice water. Many times melting the ice in the hot Texas summer sun...unknowingly would melt the plastic in the drink. She eventually developed a rare cancer in her mid 60s that caused her arteries/blood vessels to rupture. The doctor would patch one spot to just have multiple other ruptures happen somewhere else in the body. On the 3rd surgery, the doctors could then see the bigger issue and my family made the call to just let her rest and not tell her what had happened to her body. She went from perfectly healthy to gone in a matter of 5 days. I forgot the name of the cancer, but the doctors at the leading cancer institute in Houston said that it was due from the plastics getting in her bloodstream and breaking down her insides. Ever since, I have tried my best to not heat up any plastic or drink from any plastic bottles knowing the dangers of them.

The problem is the goverment in general needs to set laws FOR massive companies that distribute products and make it illegal to use plastic as much as possible. That way the companies have no choice but to be environmentally friendly. Then we run into the issue of big corp being in the governments pockets so its hopeless.

1950’s? Are u kidding me? You couldn’t find a drink in any gas station in this country, not sold in glass, in the early 90’s. Plastic 2 liter bottles only happened in the mid/late-80’s. Coffee came in a metal can well after I started shopping on my own, in the late 90’s. Our ENTIRE society, feeding and medicating billions of people, is all built around fossil fuels. Farmers use machines that run on oil, to plant, harvest, and fertilize crops. The fertilizer is made from fossil fuels. Then we ship the food in a machine running on oil, to a building where other machines that run on oil, wrap the food in plastic, also made from oil. We ship food all over the globe in giant barges that run on oil. Then HALF of all food produced, is thrown away. It was always about profit. They don’t give a flying fuck about anything, besides their quarterly earnings reports, and what the board of directors thinks of it. This is LAW, that a corporation has to put profits over all else, which is why they dump shit into rivers and DGAF when a pipeline ruptured. Their punishment? $25 million fine........which is an absolute joke compared to their profits.

Most recycleries don't actually recycle the plastic you send them. Between the low relative yield after reconstituting it versus the cost of doing so and the amount of new plastics produced every year reducing it's value as a commodity, almost all of them either send it straight to the dump (meaning a second trip in an exhaust spewing truck), or sell it to China who turn it into an even less biodegradable carbon product used in insulation and flooring and single use. My family has decided, after contacting ours (Behr) and confirming, that the environmentally responsible choice is actually to just throw it away. Outside of that, we really go out of our way to use as little plastic as possible in the first place, and reuse as much of it as we can. For example, using the tubs lunch meat comes in as tupperware.

Sure we used the container... and we disposed of it. So once I put it in the appropriate container to be disposed of I have effectively done all I can do. Phthalates are plasticizers. Plasticizers are added to plastic to alter it thermal and mechanical properties to varying degrees. A great example of this is PVC. The PVC pipes in your house have no plasticizer and are very rigid, but if you have a blend of 60% plasticizer 40% PVC then you end up with a really flexible material like those used in IV bags in hospitals. The plasticizers for PVC are phthalate based and when you get an IV bag hooked up to you you’re basically being pumped with some amount of phthalates. Same with some PVC tubing that’s used in hospitals, lots of phthalates in those suckers. The issue with replacing phthalates is that they work really well to the point that a lot of alternatives being researched aren’t even close to producing the same level of results as phthalates. On top of that they’re pretty cheap to make because they’re fossil fuel based, compared to a lot of other plasticizers that work to some extent. Also micro plastics are a different issue than phthalates. We don’t know what micro plastics do to our bodies and it’s damn near impossible to have a good micro plastics study because everything is covered in plastic, especially in research. I highly doubt that the micro plastics in blood is real because you can easily have a tiny piece of plastic contaminate the lab easily.

@@archaicsage4803 wouldn’t call it “fine”. Infection is still your biggest risk in any surgery. Plastics have contributed to a drastic decline in infections in medicine. And before you mention antibiotics, you need to admit that not everyone can take antibiotics. Also relying on antibiotics could lead to antibiotics being less effective when you really need them. Saying we’re “fine” 50 years ago kinda makes giggle. When you remember back then doctors recommended a certain brand of cigarette…

@@archaicsage4803 "We got along fine 50 years ago." Plastics in medicine go back further, to around 1940 or so. So more like 80 years. Maybe you're ok with setting medicine back 80 years and dealing with the resulting increased preventable death rate, but most people are not.

30 years ago I was commercial fishing in Alaska. The biggest WTF was all the plastic in my world. I then worked for a plastic company for 8 years. One of THE top 3! If we received or produced ourselves recycled plastic, only10 percent could be used. This for quality control and customer parameters. Most went straight to landfills. Single use plastic increased multi-fold during covid. The oceans will be choking on plastic. We can blame only those..

I work for one of if not the largest plastic manufacturers in the world. The biggest shock to me was how almost none of it is recyclable. I think we had around 15%-20%. And that’s not the percent of what is actually recycled by consumers. Not sure how long ago you worked there, but it doesn’t seem like we have made much progress.

Using glass would be a start. I do not store or cook any food in microwave anything in plastic, but use glass containers. It's also way easier to clean and lasts longer. Ever microwave anything with tomato based things in them in plastic? Shades red pretty quickly with buildup at tops. Unfortunately, can't find a glass based water filter.
