Yeah, kickass color schemes shouldn't be so exclusive/locked behind a steep paywall/literally unable to get after their original run. although, it would be amazing if these clone manufacturers start creating their own colorways, like Akko.

To be fair this argument is a bit shady. Yeah you can't copyright color, but it's not like kit designers just slap a color on the keys. They put work into choosing a pallette, legends, novelties, cables, depending on the kit even custom fonts. If you wouldn't wear fake clothing/merch, you shouldn't buy unoriginal sets. If it's so easy to make good looking sets, why do people buy fake GMKs instead of original sets from those other manufacturers.

Hard to imagine there is a sentiment that you may actually be a bad person because you don't want to pay 300$ for 200 grams of colored plastic. this, its like hating on people for buying rep shoes. Not only are these sets expensive retail, but for some the aftermarket is INSANE. I've been wanting Future Funk, but even finding an after market set is nigh impossible and when you do, you're gonna pay several hundreds of dollars. Esp when the dye sub PBT wont fade in double the time it takes the GMK to shine. I agree with the video, specifically designed novelties shouldn't be copied, as with some mousepad designs. I'd never buy a fake Future Funk mousepad because an actual artist created it.

I'm so divided on this subject. Genuine sets are too expensive and have too long a lead time. For what you're paying you shouldn't have to wait 2 years. The reason clones have become popular is because of this forced scarcity. At the same time if someone had copied my work I'd be pissed. I don't know how to feel.

Hot take: clone keycaps are like that third-party controllers you see everywhere on the market. A bit of a lower quality, undistinguishable for the untrained ears and eyes. So, imo, as long as they are upfront about them not being the real deal, doesn't overcharge or lie to their customers, they have all the right to exist. Why go mad over them? You got thicker keycaps, sharper fonts and more lively colors using double-shot if you go for the real deal anyway, right? Unless... well, the reason you actually paid 150$ ish and wait 2 years was manufactured scarcity and now you are only mad because your exclusivity is gone. ps: I could be wrong, so take this with a grain of salt. Tthere are no official info I could find about the GMK mecha keycaps set (which are clearly designed after Evangelion) are officially licensed by the creator of the aforementioned manga / anime, so unless this was proven wrong, you could stop with the "plagiarism" bull shit.

Also it's damned shady practice to charge buttload of money for not even a 100 grams of PBT plastic (one of the cheapest material in the world). Those people are Charing 180$ for a set that costs 6$ to manufacture... Why are they selling for this much ?They can since silly people with lots of money are more than happy to pay, so why would they sell for a lower the price ? God bless those clone makers, they might only profit 10$- 20$ on a set but they sure as hell are gonna sell more and make more people happy. That's why I love Shenzhen, there are no patent laws, you liked something ? go buy it, dismantle it, improve it, change it, rebrand it and sell for cheaper price. That’s just a green and white keycap set. Now to get people to buy the set, yes they put botanical in the name, which is definitely unfair. Ethics wise, what I’m trying to say is some clones are more ethical than others. When you rip off novelties. Or if the color patterns were super distinct like Gmk Dracula. But imo, I don’t think these “vague” clones are really too bad morally. Obviously not squeaky clean though.
