Is It Normal to Have a Bump on My Nose After Rhinoplasty? | Dr. Jonathan Sykes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

drjonathansykes.com/ -- It’s not the greatest outcome to have a nasal bump on your nose after rhinoplasty, but the bigger question is whether this post-surgery bump is permanent? Most often, it’s just the healing process, but sometimes it can be caused by the surgery itself or how your bone heals. Here’s a quick guide.
FULL ARTICLE: drjonathansykes.com/is-it-nor...
Depending on the location of the bump, a surgeon will remove it in different ways. A bump in the upper part of the nose is made up of bone while a bump mid to lower nose is made up of cartilage. A bony bump is filed down, but cartilage is cut away. The skin redrapes over the upper half of the nose quicker than the lower half of the nose because the skin is thicker the more you move down the nose, it could take the lower nose a year to a year and a half to show all the changes from a rhinoplasty while the upper part of the nose only takes about six or seven months. Because of this, it may appear that there is a bump when it is actually the swelling or from the skin not being fully re-draped over the nose.
Can a nasal bump or hump go away if it’s not removed?
A nasal bump or hump that is on your nose prior to surgery will not go away on its own. However, a bump or hump that you see after surgery could very well resolve itself, especially if it is in the lower part of the nose.
Think of it this way. When we break our arm and the bone heals, it may develop a little callous on it either from the way it was set or how your bone heals. A surgeon cannot anticipate how a bone will heal, but a bump in the cartilage of the lower half of the nose or at the tip can resolve itself as swelling subsides and skin redrapes.
When should I consider revision rhinoplasty?
I don’t like to do revision rhinoplasty for 8 to 12 months after surgery. If there are issues in the nasal tip, I like to wait a year because the skin is thicker there and we may not see the subtle changes yet. If there are issues in the bridge, I might do a revision in about eight or nine months because the thinner skin in that location allows the skin to redrape faster and we can see what’s actually going on.
I’ve done lots of primary rhinoplasties and since my practice is in Beverly Hills, I see many people who have had their noses overdone, and so it’s very common for me to get lots of requests for revisions. If you have an issue with your nose, or if you’ve had a rhinoplasty and have a secondary problem, call or email me. I help patients like you every day, and I’d love to talk to you, see photographs, and even see you in my office to potentially fix it.

*Update 3/9/2022* I do have to go back and get my nose corrected. My nose formed a bony callus over the bridge. I'm doing a facelift anyway, so they will do it while I'm out for that. Always go back and talk to your doctor if you have concerns.** Thank you for this! I'm almost 3 weeks out on my rhinoplasty. At first, my nose had a super nice slope... now it seems like there is just the slightest bump. I'm actually wondering if it's because my tip is still super swollen and that it won't be a hump once fully healed (if that makes sense). My nose still looks good none the less post rhinoplasty, and I understand plastic surgery isn't perfection.

My doctor said that it is more likely to go away and recommended massage. Now that I read the comments and see people didn't get rid of it I'm really scared. Hi, thank you for the video. I had a rhinoplasty 5 weeks ago to fix broken nose, and am worried as I now have a visible bump on the other side of my upper nose. I had a FESS & septoplasty too and another concern is that I constantly have foul smelling mucus which is yellow green in colour and often when I bend my head forwards will drain from one nostril, opposite to the bump. It tastes disgusting & despite the op, My snoring has got worse too. Pls help

  • @lisae6725

i didn't realize how much of an emoional process this revision was going to be. I'm 2 months post Rhino/Septoplasty and I've had so much anxiety that it's making me have thougts that I don't want to have. I'm not really seeing the changes in the "bad side" that I antiipated and have a bump on the upper side of my nasal bride that looks like a white line. It feels bigger han i looks but I can't stop looking at it, My skin on the side walls also looks weird with some disolorations and the side walls appear bony in appearance compared to the tip which is still pretty swollen. I'm trying to trust the process because I did pick a highly qualified surgeon with excellent reviews and pictures who actually trained in Beverly Hills with Dr. Nassif. I hope I'm not going to be the red herring. I was very happy with my first procedure for years but he didn't use enough support and so 20 years later, it was collapsing and the nasal tip was twisting. I saw my surgeon yesterday and he told me that he could do a trim to my one nostril that is still larger than the other in the office but not yet. He wants to wait a few months yet because that was one of my main issues. It is improved but not as much as I wanted. I need to stop looking in the mirror because it is just making me feel miserable and depressed. I feel like I'm just cursed to have a nose that is ugly. I had a severe fracture as a child and the work that was done initially really was remarkable with what he had to contend with so I thought this revision would be so much easier to get my ultimate results but maybe it's not to be. I'm 51 and just started menopause and have never felt more unattractive than I do now. I don't have the money for another procedure nor do I think I can go throug this emotional roller-coaster.

@chinchinchilly I think surgeons often dismiss errors saying that it's fine or that there's no way to tell until about a year. 🙄😒 I actually found one answer forum where a surgeon responding to a woman's post (With pictures) told her as much... he flat out said that her surgeon clearly to remove enough of the hump. I have since had ANOTHER surgery by a different doctor with rib cartridge used. Now I breath horribly AND have a acar on my upper rib cage AND the right side of the hump was left YET again while the left side was removed further because of trying to smooth out the dent that the previous doctor put there. Also, the cartilage in the tip appears to be separating which I have never had happen before. He is "waiting to see" what else happens before doing surgery again. He says he will probably need to take x-rays of my ribs to see what section to use next time. 🤦‍♀️🙏 I am going back to taping each night in the meantime which helps some with the tip. Please continue to advocate for yourself. If you have a hump then WE ALL KNOW that is NOT supposed to be there especially after 5 months. Maybe look into trying to find an office that gives free consultations and see what that surgeon says... (just to see) .. and possibly be seen by an ENT (or different ENT if your surgeon is already also an ENT). PRAYERS FOR US BOTH to get our NOSES working great and looking adorable! 🙏🙏🙏

Right after my surgery my bridge was completely flat 4 months later I have a hump again on the upper part of my nose. I can tell its not inflammation because its hard like a bone. Seems like its staying I guess.

No way I’m going through the same thing! I’m 6 months post op and I researched that if you massage it, it should go down, but you simply have to give it a full year. I’m also super discouraged cause mine feels hard and when I press on it, it feels tender

@@britneynavarro608 yes mine too, my doctor said that hump will probably stay. He said we can rasp the bone after one year, but I really don't want any other operations. Also, cannot afford it lol.
