one tip for backing a fifth wheel and bumper hitch trailer is to put you hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then move your hand in the direction that you want the back of the trailer to go.

  • @brucefay5126

    @brucefay5126

True, but that is only the beginning of the story and the rest of the story never gets told. Once the back of a trailer (5th wheel or bumper pull) starts to move in that direction if you maintain the wheel in that direction the angle between the trailer and the tow vehicle will continue to change (get smaller) until you jackknife the trailer. Think about how your steer tires are turned when making a turn going forward. Once you have the trailer moving around to the left or right you have to return the wheel to the center or slightly the other way to maintain that radius of turn.

Good job guys. Phil, a trick I learned when driving big rigs was to steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. From the bottom to make the tail turn left you push the wheel left, two go right push right. That way you don't have to remember left to go right and right to go left which is what you have to do when you steer from the top. But great job.

It all depends on what you get used to. I've been towing trailers for 50+ years, starting with pulling a hay wagon with a tractor on my grandpa's farm when I was a kid and currently tow a 24+ foot boat trailer at least several times per week, so pulling and backing a trailer has pretty much become second nature. That being said, I'm sure there would still be a learning curve pulling a 5th wheel since the pivot point is in a different location. The first time I got behind our "new to us" Class A, however, it was a TOTALLY different experience and harkened back to my days as a bus driver when I was in high school (and, yes, high school students driving the school bus was a real thing back in the day!). It quickly became second nature after the first several thousand miles. I have to agree with Phil that the ability to grab something to eat or drink, or go to the bathroom without having to stop at a restaurant or rest area is FANTASTIC!!

We tow a 31' 5th wheel with a 2019 Ford F350 single rear wheel axle. We very seldom have trouble driving in traffic, going into parking lots, fuel stations and rv sites. When we had our 30' motorhome, it was different. The motorhome moves as one unit and challenging to manipulate/articulate when in tight spaces. You just have to get the experience behind the wheel to get comfortable.

with a 5th wheel/pull behind, use the bottom part of the steering wheel. then you will turn the wheel the same as the direction you want your trailer to go. try it. it works. Go left -->turn bottom of the wheel left. Go right --> turn the bottom of the wheel right.

Great job!! The best advice my husband gave me was if I want the fifth wheel to go right turn the truck wheel left. So if you need right turn left and if you need left turn right. It’s so confusing but every time I park I say it over and over lol AND just act like the 20 people yelling about what you need to do are not there lol the first time I parked the fifth wheel I had my husband, park manager, other campers...trying to help and I seriously got so confused! My husband just told me to imagine it was just me and him there and it went so smooth!

Many years ago, when I was a young Lieutenant, my driver broke his leg the day we were supposed to redeploy from an exercise to home base. We were returning on a C-130, and it would be a hot load, meaning the aircraft would land, taxi over to us, and we would load the aircraft with the engines running. I had to drive the 1/4 ton (Jeep) pulling a trailer and back it into the aircraft. I was having a difficult time, made even more so because the C-130 loadmaster was screaming at me for taking so long, “Do you have any f..king idea how much fuel we’re burning while you’re d..king around!!!!” Of course, he had no way of knowing I wasn’t the assigned driver, but ever since then I have nightmares about backing a trailer!

Been there done that Brother! Back in the 70, I used to work in an Air Force Tactical Reconnaissance mobile Photo Processing and Interpretation Facility. All of our equipment and workspace were built into air mobile shelters with detachable wheels that convert them into trailers. They were just able to fit into a C-130 ramp door. And of course the web seats barely cleared the shelter walls and tires. Three guesses where we had to sit. Anyway we were in a similar situation trying to hit a tight chock time and it was not going well getting the blasted thing up the ramp straight. Unbeknownst to us the loadmaster had opened the side door and left it up while we were maneuvering the shelter. That side door slides up and inward on a track following the curve of the fuselage. We were all so focused on getting the shelter up the ramp that nobody saw the door. It took overnight to get the door repaired and back on the track.

As a class A semi truck driver of over 25 years now, I don't find it funny watching people learn to pull trailers, but the entertainment value never gets old, Lol! And that rig you're learning in is TINY compared to a full class A semi. Just remember the first rule of pulling large trailers: NEVER, EVER forget that you're pulling a trailer. Believe it or not, you will eventually reach a point where you become complacent, and that's when bad things happen. In truck stops, I have seen well more than a dozen RV'ers forget this rule and plow right into steel guard poles on the outside edges of the fule island, and ripping their trailers up really bad.

I love watching both of your channels. I am selling my home and wanting to buy a class A. But, I do have one comment. After driving an 18 wheeler for almost 30 years, you all need to know that a person never drives a 5th wheel. You pull it.

As a single, senior woman who is about to go on the road with a 29 foot fifth wheel alone, I Loved this video and all its practical tips plus showing someone who is brand new to tell him the fifth wheel. I love the respect the teacher gave his student. I had just watched another video where Husband was teaching his wife and it was a whole different story. He would’ve made anyone nervous to learn because he kept saying how he hated relinquishing control to her and how stressed he was. He was so busy talking about his experience that he didn’t understand that he needed to focus on her, her learning, and her stress. I would love to see more videos, showing women learning to take an equal active role. It would really help me out. I have 30 years of experience, putting my ski boat in and out of the water and I am usually the only woman doing it. You learn a lot just by doing it, but it can drive you crazy if you’ve got someone stressed sitting next to you making unnecessary comments! Come on guys… Her up the women and give a role model to your young sons and daughters that this is a possibility. Let’s work for equal partnership please. Someday your wife may be all alone and still want to enjoy the RV life. I should know.

we had 2 class a, and last time bought a 5R, trailer first. Then we got our truck. We got a Mack hdt. While I am really comfy in a big rig my hubby was not. but after some practice and the fact our Mack has a turning radius = to a dually, and we can jack knife it if needed, he is doing great. Practice...practice...and the word is....practice. Phil you did great.

I had the opposite fear. I towed trailers & boats for years with little to no fear after the first few trips. Moving to a 34' Class A un-nerved me the first few trips. But then you get use to it and its no big deal. Now we are back to a trailer again. I think it's all just a matter of perspective. He backed in like he's done it dozen of times...

I started driving farm equipment in the 50's and have driven TT's, 5th's, straight trucks, 78 passenger school buses in both conventional and pusher chassis formats. My farm boy experiences made the rest of it almost second nature. Good job Phil.

I think one huge thing to help people is to find an empty lot if you can and do just like you did - get some soccer cones (they are fairly inexpensive) and just play with your rig and see what the capabilities are, and see what your limits are. I drive a 30' DP with an 18' open deck car trailer, and every chance I can I play in parking lots to keep myself familiar with how it turns and backs with the trailer back there.

My take from this was that everyone does things differently (there’s no right or wrong) and, takes themselves out of their own comfort zone when changing to something new. I’ve never driven any r.v. but, would be really excited and relish the challenge (I suppose it’s a state of mind type of thing at that point of time), I definitely wouldn’t have thought Phil would be so concerned about the fifth wheel, he reminded me a little bit of when Stacy was driving 😬, (I thought she was brilliant but, she obviously felt outside of her comfort zone). Once you alter the style of driving to what’s required, it will be fine, after practice etc... Regarding being able to not climb back to make a sandwich etc... surely that’s just more time consuming organisation, once it’s planned it becomes second nature. They’re just totally different styles, it was so nice to see you four together though. Watching Tara made me laugh she said what I thought 😈 but, she did seem to be thinking about swinging, for a little bit too long though 🤣🤭😂. Just for the record, this type of content is so appealing, well done guys 👍🏻🤛🏻.

The easy way to back up a trailer or fifth wheel is to hold the steering wheel from the bottom. Turn the wheel you want the trailer to go.

No way in a million years would I want to travel in a 5th wheel!!! I've towed 40ft long 5th wheel car haulers, so it has nothing to do with the drive part, it has everything to do with the convenience, plus I can tow a Jeep for off road fun. It really is a no-brainer if you right out the pros and cons. Phil and Stacy, you're 100% right in your opinion. Sidenote: I have a bladder like a thimble, and I often jump up at a traffic light, run back, take a pee, and I'm back in the seat before the light changes, even with a quick hand wash. Try that in a 5ver..

Hand on the bottom of the wheel, turn in the direction you want the trailer to go. Follow that rule and you will always be successful. I know you guys had a wide open area with cones, but it's always a good practice to have your significant other on the blind side with a radio or cell phone (and cell phones can have a short delay) watching for clearance. Some of the engine noise in that environment is the fan clutch engaging. Our 2017 F350 towing a 40ft Montana will pretty much roll off at idle on a level area. Great fun for all of you. Looking forward to Changing Lanes video!

Looks like you will be hitting that 100K mark any day now. I have never towed a 5th wheel, but I have towed a lot of commercial trailers that had goose neck hitches, so I imagine it will be similar enough to be comfortable with it. The sheer size of those Class A's is intimidating, but after seeing this, and Changing Lane's video, it might be easier than I think it is. Great idea the two channels had to do this, very good information.

Dad drove semi's for years and backing up any trailer is pretty easy. Put your hand at the bottom of the wheel and push the bottom of the steering wheel the direction you want the rear of the trailer to go. It really takes all the pain out if it.
