Is it ever okay to wear fur? My Take on Faux Fur vs. Vintage Fur & My Collection of Vintage Fur

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We know that the fur industry is horrible, and faux fur and vintage fur have been cited as sustainable alternatives. In this video I discuss the pros and cons of both, as well as why some people think we shouldn't be wearing any kind of fur at all.

Thanks for your balanced take. There is some kind of anti-fur hysteria going on in many Western countries right now. It's all because of PETA, which catches people with an emotional message, and at the same time has a lot of dirty deeds on its account.

That's not entirely true. Like not trying to argue 😅. High end/ good quality faux fur"fake fur" gives the highest softness, more so then real fur. An example would be throw on blankets for autumn and winter that have a very soft touch and good quality faux fur coats that feel very soft almost rabbit fur feel. Faux fur Coats might label the fur as "faux rabbit fur" meaning the faux fur mimics rabbit fur. Of course there is faux fur that feels very rough and coarse to the touch but that's low quality faux fur which is the most common fur companies use. Good quality faux fur also provides warmth and well as softness. :) I support people who buy real fur coats second hand as buying second hand minimizes waste. IMO I feel faux for is a better choice over all. Donating faux fur is the best alternative to minimizing waste if someone no longer needs or wants the garment.

Im not sure if everyone has the knowledge of how these animals are killed but i have seen some real fur fans excited of the torture these animals go through . Wearing fur is promoting how good it looks no matter vintage brand new second hand or even if find a fur coat , wearing it is promoting people to then buy one. Example when i was younger i see a lady wearing one and asked her where she bought it from as looked beautiful she told me and it was so beautiful and cheap. So i bought it. Couple years later a programme come on channel 4 about fur trade and ive never cr8ed so much in all my life. It was wrong me buying a fur coat anyway i dont know what i was thinking but i was very young and i just thought they would live on a big farm not in cages have a normal life on a farm and shot dead. • @meghansandor

Absolutely, and I think you can definitely love animals and still love fur. Because there’s so much attention to the fur industry and designers are being pushed to be more responsible, a lot of fur is sustainably/humanely raised in greater quantities than it was 50+ years ago. You can always ask the designer where they source their fur and what their supply chain is like, and most (if they’re responsible) will be more than happy to tell you. And who cares what people think! Like you said, it’s just a perception. There’s a lot more that goes into wearing and sourcing fur than people realize

Love that fox fur! Been eyeing this vintage ocelot leopard fur coat at a thrift store. I fit a an xs or small, the jacket seems a little oversize I'm assuming furs were that style in the 80's 90's, most of my jackets are snug fit, so I hesitated in buying it not used to it feeling oversizebut at the same though, it's rare to find a fur leopard jacket, it does fit around my wrist & the the rest of the body is a little looser. The second I wore it I felt like I was wrapped in a cozy warm blanket. I buy fur for the practicality & functionality to keep me warm! Compared to my down jacket, sheepskin & fur is my preference. I wonder if it would ruin the cut of the fur if it was taken in & I want to go to someone that knows how to deal with fur & I dk where to look for & if the cost would be expensive? I'm contemplating in buying that jacket 🤔 its sooo..warm & luxurious. The price is $129 do you think that is too high for a thrift store (Salvation army) i was intending to buy another down jacket, but your right its just plastic I'm wearing compared to fur. Leopard is one of my fave animal prints!

Meghan.... Let's talk coats..... 1947-1962.....Not for several decades had the coat been as important for women as it was in the years after World War II. Uniforms influenced fashion, especially the military trench coat, which was adopted for civilian wear as much by women as by men. This popular trend was bolstered by Hollywood screen queens: Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Ava Gardner, and Katharine Hepburn all famously wore trenches in movies during this period, to glamorous effect. The right coat was a key element for achieving a polished, “tied-together” look. It was vital that the outer garment was just long enough to cover the hem of the dress or skirt underneath. Since wartime shortages of materials decreased, coats became ever more luxurious. Furs, in particular, took off and for many women, a mink coat was the ultimate status symbol of the era --- The Encyclopedia of Fashion..... The end.... Always in Good Taste... CHERS!..... From a "big picture" point of view, synthetics like fake fur are probably far more destructive than the real thing. Having said that, I wouldn't feel comfortable buying a new fur coat. I do have items made partially of fur that are probably not old enough to be considered vintage, but they were purchased second-hand (as is the vast majority of my wardrobe, including all of my handbags and accessories, and all of my footwear but athletic shoes.) About the only things I buy new are socks, undergarments, and the occasional tee or tank needed to complete an outfit. Anyway, I have heard people argue against wearing even vintage or other second-hand fur, but I find the arguments unconvincing. Would those making them think it was somehow more ethical to just throw them away? That's not only wasteful, it seems horribly disrespectful of the animals who died to make those coats.

I'm very much an advocate of vintage fur. I think in Britain we don't have the same level of protest and vitriol against fur as the USA does. We definitely have more freedom to do things here without feeling uncomfortable; people do protest and we've had anti-fur TV adverts, but it's aimed at discouraging buying fur in the first place, rather than attacking the people who have already bought fur. I personally have a lovely secondhand real fox fur Moncler pompom beanie, which a wonderful lady sold to me with all the authentication details. I've always loved fur glothing because of both how it looks and feels, as well as how practical it is. I live in Sweden where winters definitely get cold, plus I'm the type of person who just gets unreasonably cold for nothing. I agree with you on pretty much all points. I'm fine with vintage and ethically produced fur, but I would never buy new furs otherwise, and I'm not a fan of faux fur. In the past I bought and wore faux fur but hated the plastic feel and how sweaty it made me. Now all my faux fur jackets are too small for me to wear so I'll probably sell or give them away as they're still in good condition and high quality that looks like real fur. I only have one real fur clothing item and it's a vintage coat I found at a thrift store. It appears to have been handmade by a furrier on the island where I live. Judging by how it looks and feels I'd guess it's mink and at least 40 years old if not more. It's in this type of style that could have been worn in the 1920's just as well as the 1980's. It's in good condition but needs some minor repairs for the closure mechanism that's broken and rusty, and some ripped seams in the lining, which I can fix myself. I bought it for 500 Swedish kronor, which is roughly 50-55 dollars. I'm very happy with it, it's everything I've ever wanted.

Thank you so much for this detailed and nuanced video on this topic! You look so gorgeous in the fashion show :) I only missed the point of traceability of fur pieces. I prefer to wear vintage or real fur that is traceable to specific farms. Would you consider wearing that? For example saga furs has very strict regulations in place for animal welfare in contrast to for example Chinese suppliers (check welfur). Even though I think the video's shot by peta about animals being skinned alive in China are probably fabricated because besides being cruel, skinning alive animals only makes the process more difficult and the results worse. Farmers will never do that if it harms their profit. I think real fur coats are almost always more beautiful / soft / luxurious then faux alternatives. I buy my furs in Germany mostly and they are expensive but still affordable ( for example lowest 150 for a rex / 100 Fox vest up to 1500 for a chin). I think it would be a shame if we would lose this beauty in the world. Again thanks so much!

Hi Sylke, glad you enjoyed! I would definitely consider buying fur if the source was traceable and ethical (like the rabbit fur I bought for the muff I made in the video). In my mind, it's the same as eating meat, both can be equally cruel or ethical depending on how the animals are raised and treated. Interesting point about the farmers not wanting to be cruel! I will have to read more about that for sure, thanks for your insight :)

@meghansandor I should think not dear. You would not find this quality at a thrift shop. I had to go looking for them. They were bought new from fur salons and were 1 owner coats and were 10 of 10 condition. The blackglama especially. It gave me cold chills when I first found it.

But does it matter whether it's "vintage fur" or not? I mean as far as I'm concerned, it's still genuine fur. I mean what do you mean by "You would never buy real fur?"

  • @meghansandor

    @meghansandor

    4 ай бұрын

Vintage fur is secondhand, and therefore already made, worn and discarded. By continuing to use/wear it, you’re extending the life of that garment, which is more respectful to the animals who died so it could be made. Also, those animals died a long, long time ago. They’re not being killed so that YOU can wear their skins. They’re already dead. Buying and wearing brand-new furs (by which I mean you’re the first person to own and wear that garment), encourages the continued exploitation and cruelty towards animals.

@meghansandor I don't know, as far as I'm concerned dead is dead whether yesterday or today but...if you say so. I don't think PETA or those against others wearing fur would consider, nor would they care about that concept. Personally, I wear what I want and think others should (or shouldn't) wear what they want too.

Exactly so fur is far more dangerous to the environment than real fur real natural fur is a sustainable and biodegradable and as a fashion designer and the fur enthusiast I feel very offended that a lot of the animal rights advocates have the audacity to try to tell me what I can and cannot use for my designs in my creations and they have the audacity to put it in legislation I don't think that's right and I don't think that's fair I mean if you personally do not wish to wear fur and I'm not talkin about vintage Fair I'm talking about nuffer if you don't want to buy any new forever then that's your preference however I don't think that you should be able to tell other people that they shouldn't wear it either because you don't want to wear it they shouldn't wear it either it's like meet you don't want to eat meat you're vegan or vegetarian but you shouldn't be allowed to dictate to other people with they should and should not eat if that's the same as to wear fur or not to wear fur now I can support or get behind a plan to humanely euthanize the animals for their fur because I have heard of how cruel the fur farms and how viciously cruel they treat the animals so if there is a more humane way that the fur industry can euthanize the animals for their fur I can definitely support and get behind the program like that but as far as the animal rights advocates trying to tell people or forcing people not to buy fur and wear fur and trying to force fashion brands to stop using for her I'm totally against that using fur whether it's new or vintage in your fashion design or you know as a consumer to wear Fair that should be your own personal choice

I love fur. I have a rabbit fur coat that I bought second hand. I also have rabbit fur hat that I bought new. I don't understand the hate. It's an animal and it's going to die anyway. I love animals and using their skin and fur is to have that animal live on by our honoring it. There were incidents in the 90's where people had thrown paint on a woman's fur coat. That's a criminal act. Harassment, assault, destruction of private property and emotional distress. Those people were prosecuted. Now fake fur is just another synthetic polluting our ocean.

I understand why people are uncomfortable with real fur, but I'm an ex-vegan and I buy both used and new furs. There are ethical sustainable fur farms just like there's ethical meat. I've personally toured some very clean and the animals have huge cages and toys. Real fur garments are handmade by artisans, versus fast fashion faux, and I personally believe any handmade item is more ethical than anything else. I personally handmake my own fur coats, it takes me 8 months to make one but I plan to own them forever as I put so much effort into. Also most fur coats don't take that many animals! Thankfully it's normally more like 6 to 18 pelts :)

Look... it's great for everyone to stand for something but I always had the impression and feeling that people who don't agree with people wearing fur and PETA aggressively FORCE their views on others as to shame people for liking what they like as though we don't have our own free will. That's my only issue and concern.
