Is it Cactus Root Rot or Not? | Rotting Cactus

One of the more often causes of a cactus dying is cactus root rot. But sometimes, it is tricky to determine if the marks that you see on your cactus is actually a root rot, or maybe it is something else. In this video, let me show you examples of what a root rot looks like and when it is not a root rot.

Heart breaking to see a plant die. 😞 We learn though. If I remember correctly, you got that Astrophytum when it was raining or the plants were just watered heavily. I suspect the rotting was caused by fungus. When Daz and I were just new growing them, we had about a dozen Asterias that rotted off one by one. We were very puzzled because the potting mix was very porous and we were very careful in watering. If the plant had been infected by fungus even from the nursery and we unknowingly just repotted it without treating it first, it will always be a losing battle. So what I do now whenever i get a new plant is to clean it first and soak it in a fungicide diluted in water for at least 15 mins before potting it up. Refrain from watering for a week. So far so good. Thanks for sharing, Ana. Ingat lagi sis. ❤️🌵🙏🌸🌺🥰

Yeah those asterias we got already had issues, just took a little while to manifest, still have one left from that batch that made it and is doing well thankfully. Whenever I have cactus rot it’s usually after their first watering after dormancy, like with my Turbinicarpus swobodea. Such a shame when this happens, but it’s just one of the many challenges growing these plants. Thank you for sharing this informative video with us Ana, from Edith & myself, stay safe and have a wonderful day and upcoming weekend 😊🌵☀️🌺🌸🌼🏜☕️

Oh Edith! You have a good memory. Yes, I bought this just after we had rains here during the winter. And that nursery did not have a roof on top of the cactus shelves. Although when I reported it, I did not see any signs of rotting. But yes, it could just be starting at that time. I am interested in that anti-fungal dip that you do . Do you mean it won’t burn the roots? I will message you on IG. Salamat sis! 😃🌵☕️

Thank you Daz. Why do we always learn the hard way? 😩 From the extent of the rotting, it looks like it has been there a long time and it just took a while to show itself outside the cactus.

Oh no Ana, so sorry to see your Astro nudum has rot, I have lost a few Atros in the past too, and never knew what caused it, its so gutting when we lose plants we love. This is such a helpful video for so many growers especially with showing if it could be rot or not, and because the lower brown scarring at the base is commonly seen on many healthy cacti it can be worrying for some new growers that may think its rot, and your video is so helpful in showing the difference between rot or not, and brilliant tips with the brown spots on cacti too, thanks so much for sharing this wonderful and very informative video Ana, and sending you tons of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a fantastic Friday today XXXX

Yeah sometimes you will never know what causes it to do so. Lost a few in my over 50 years of growing cactus & succulents. I have the same euphorbia. It got a spot about an inch from the top. I watched as it started to progress. I cut the top three inches below the tip. Laid the infected piece aside so I could watch it , and it shriveled up quickly!!! The plant remains perfectly healthy. Glad I cut that piece away cause it would have killed it! Yeah I don't mind a little "bark" on the old plants, it's natural. Look at cacti growing in the desert, they all get bark as they age. Perfectly normal. From Morris park in the Ozarks have a great evening!!!!Peace,Love,Plants!!!!!✌💖🌵🌺🌴🌻🌿

Normally rotting could also be due to an open wound (it could be a small wound not noticeable ) somewhere at the rim of the cactus. When watering it will get on the wound and that’s where fungus can breed and enter thus killing the plant.

Thanks for insightful video. I was wondering if you have advice about my moon cactus. I have had it since May but noticed it was taking a long time for the soil to get dry so I waited about a month till it was fully dry before I watered it again. I didn’t realize it was too much as it had root rot. I cut off the blackening parts so only a very small section of cactus is left; the top orange scion is fine for now but will not survive without being grafted to another cactus. Can I use any cactus like the Stenocereus Pruinsus Cactus or mini cactus to graft the Scion for moon cactus? I already have the mini cactus. Or would you recommend another cactus or can I keep the original cactus in the soil though it has been substantially cut with only a tiny bit of root left?

I find that I have “cleaned” off growth I thought was not supposed to be there to later realize it’s part of its growth/character. Like fibers or spots ,etc. Can cacti get scale what does that look like. I have a blue candle in an arrangement n it started getting yellow spots. I moved to less bright sun n now notice beige scale looking spot not tiny like usual scale. This was very helpful n hope u do more. Really helps to know what to look for n what’s a concern n what’s normal. Also which Neem oil do u use n how strong dilution?

Hi Ana, If you have time love, what is your opinion on what's wrong? I have a Ferocactus Latispinus and it's oozing sap from one areole on the crown at the sight of the growth. I'm growing it in a shallow small ceramic cereal bowl with 3 other desert barrel types. He is only about 3.81 centimeters in diameter. No pests are apparent. I water him only when he's been dry for several weeks. He gets about 4 to 5 hours of direct full sun but it's showing signs of slight scotching so I don't think he's getting too little sun. I've done lots of research but no solutions. Thoughts?

  • @CactusCaffeine

Is it soft where the sap is oozing out from? If yes, it might be top rot (fungus). But if the sap is clear and the cactus is not soft, maybe it is extra flora nectarine. Perfectly normal for ferocactus to do this.

I am not sure if this is the reason why I am now not experiencing root rot to my astro

Marky Dee you are the second person to tell me about cactus root trimming practice in Thailand. They do that to their seedlings, too when they transplant. 🤔

Cactus Caffeine indeed, I just figure it out the rationale behind that, possible that they do that to prevent the development of fungi, because if a plant does have a root that is no longer efficient it will eventually die, and when roots die it decompose and later on will spread, but not quite sure hahaha.

Maybe the cactus is just thirsty. Dehydrated cactus will also look wrinkled and feel soft. Or it might have completely lost its roots and is still in the process of regrowing them back. Good luck!

Sroush Abidar maybe it is mold. Do you live in a humid place and your soil is always damp? If it is mold, I would scrape it off if you can, sprinkle cinnamon powder on top, then spray it a little with water. Then try to keep your soil dry or improve air circulation around it. Another possibility is it could be salt and mineral deposits from your water. If you have hard water, the minerals from the water tend to form white powder on top of your soil.

My cactus started rotting after 2 years for an unknown reason. I 100% did not overwater it. I learned my lesson when I overwatered one of my echeverias. But the cactus was healthy and growing and watered sparsely. It had a ton of pups and looked awesome. What could have caused this? Could it be underwatering actually?! If it was fungus or some bacteria, I don't know how it would get there. It was indoors. It was only the middle stem so i cut off the bottom and all the pups seemed unaffected. It is right now "disassembled", waiting for the roots to form.

I’m sorry your cactus rotted. I’ve had some rot as well for no reason. Sometimes, it starts with an insect/animal bite that gets infected. Sometimes, it is just fungus or bacteria that is dormant and when the right conditions come up, it suddenly becomes active and takes over your cactus. It is good that you got healthy pups out of it. Good luck rooting them so they can continue the life of your cactus. 🙂👍🏼🌵🌵🌵

It is a good practice to spray or water with neem oil every now and then. It takes care of any dormant pest/fungus.

I know that you are the expert, however I have cactus similar to yours and none of the healthy ones have any dark around the bottom. I suspect yours is being caused by the layer of rocks on top. Rocks tend to hold moisture longer than cactus soil or various cactus mixes. Fungus can be in the mix however the rocks holding that moisture is probably leading to fungus and rot.

@@CactusCaffeine Hey there... Messaged on FB that I found you after searching for aide on my 4 foot cactus I've had a few years on my balcony here in Southern California... It had seemed to be doing impressively well, always blooming several green leaves on top late Aprik-Oct with just afternoon direct sun... Anyhow, several weeks ago I noticed the top going brown, & last couple weeks extended a few inches further. So, yesterday I pulled off that decayed top & used knives to further dig out a few more inches of interior rot but was hesitant to remove the further complete top area after seeing the sun dry it somewhat well. Do you think it's best to remove that too? Salamat, -Glenn😎

bro i had this lemon ball cactus for like a week and today i saw that it was mushy and has white stuff on it😥😥😥 its currently unpotted and the root look pretty fine but i think rot can start in places other than the roots sometimes. I actually kind of overwatered it yesterday or two days ago and its been a little bit colder and pretty windy. I think i should start cutting to remove the rot but i dont wanna make my cactus go trough that and find out its not rot
