Is it ADHD or Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?

It can be tricky to know if it's ADHD or Sensory Processing Disorder. SPD can mimic ADHD and it can be a comorbidity. Knowing which one is affecting your child can help you get the right treatment.
Carol Kranowitz, the amazing author of The Out-Of-Sync Child, joins me to share how ADHD and SPD overlap and the ways we can tell them apart. She works to educate parents and teachers about SPD and is an amazing resource on the subject.

I always had tantrums at school, i hated every minute of it, i had a very traumatic childhood growing up, alot of abuse, struggled making connections with people, always had anxiety, alot of fear, struggled in relationships, my family connections, i hate bright lights, always feeling frustrated and angry, i do alot of repeatative stuff like playing the same game for hours but just standing there looking at the screen and pressing a single button and watching my character just spin around rather than playing it, ive struggled with sleep, cant stay focused for very long get bored fast, ive only learnt about autism and adhd recently but spd is completely new to me and im now asking myself do i have this condition, i have alot of hobbies but cant seem to stick to them for long periods of time, i use to have alot of dizzy spells and falls ive hurt people when ive never ment to hurt them and always hate myself after and want to take revenge on myself for making them suffer, im always crying when things get to much for me, ive self harmed, been close to suicide also a few times, I was also stabbed in my head and punched as a child which caused me to become slightly deaf, my head feels so overwhelmed at times i wish i had a switch to turn my brain off its bothering me just talking about it here but i really need help and i wouldnt reach out but im desperate to know whats wrong with me, im a 45 yr old man and i need to get to the bottom of this because, i hate living with this rage inside me, i dont like fighting but when people yell at me i just flip, im always moody and only happy when im alone doing what i like doing in my own safe and secure space

Thank you for this video. I am a mother of a boy with SPD, not sure if ADHD as well. Assessed towards Autism spectrum when he was four but not confirmed. Honestly, it is difficult to have a proper diagnosis because at nursery/ school they don't see symptoms. I live in the UK. All I can do is to look for information and help him on my own. People still think that behavioural issues are the result of lack of discipline.

@ewabiek235 I am in the same boar as you! My son will turn 3 in a few weeks time and we couldn’t get a nursery placement and we don’t have a diagnosis yet. My son is mesmerised with sand and can play on its own with sand for hours. We keep him in boxers otherwise he will smear he’s poop. As soon as he wakes up, he will run around non stop with no sense of direction or sense of danger. I feel so bad as I struggle to stay calm

My life!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭 I always knew I had some sensory processing sensitivities, I just didn’t know the name or the details of it. I believe that it’s in conjunction with working memory challenges which causes the attention deficit problems In my ADD. I don’t have hyperactivity.

I'm sorry, but I haven't heard of this as a Disorder: I know of Sensory Processing Sensitivity; Sensory Processing Sensitivity; HSPs, i.e., those with this innate characteristic found among 15-20% of humans and most mammal animal species. This trait of heightened sensitivity to varied signals received seemingly intuitively waa 1st brought to light by Elain Aaron. It brings gifts and challenges, but to my knowledge is not a Disorder. In fact, in life's early days, it helped numerous communities survive, with alertness to nature, wildlife, or tribal dangers. Pls, what source is now referencing this as a Disorder? (as loved or hated it may be, who's termed it a Disorder?

It’s no always an ability in the wild either. If you live in a primitive environment and the symptoms are disruptive, it become a disability.

I have 4 kids with SPD. I was just told their brains are different from other kids their ages. I'm not sure when it actually became a disorder but for young kids it can be a huge issue when their brains are still developing. 🤷🏼‍♀️ My daughter had a seziure and it damaged her hearing receptors. She heard things 10 times louder 2 years after that seziure. That was definitely not normal. I can see why it's now a disorder.
