Is it a Sin to Curse? Can Christians Cuss? Discovering the Power of Your words - Jim Staley

Ойын-сауық

Is it a sin to curse as a Christian? Is it wrong to cuss? In this provocative teaching, Jim Staley pulls out the scriptures and walks through the Bible to find out, not only what the actual text has to say, but what God's actual heart is on the matter. No matter where you land on this subject, you will walk away challenged by just how much every word we speak carries weight and matters in the world around us.
Common arguments that we will talk about:
04:07 Words aren't evil; it's all about the intent of the heart.
12:35 Show me a list in the Bible of words that we are not allowed to use.
50:42 Sometimes it's the only way to get someone's attention.
There are no Scriptures in the Bible that say that we cannot use profanity.
Scripture Glance:
08:00 If you don't control your tongue, your religion is useless (James 1:26).
09:43 The words that come out are the words that you will eat (Proverbs 18:21).
12:35 The Holy Spirit is listening (Ephesians 4:29-32).
15:10 Our example will influence others! (Ephesians 5:3-4)
18:20 You are not a regular sheep (James 3:1).
19:52 Exercising your rights can make you a stumbling block (Mark 9:42).
22:56 Keep your soul from trouble (Proverbs 21:23).
23:17 What comes out of our mouths can defile us and our families. Kids are always listening (Matthew 15:10).
25:10 It's not about what you believe; respect the culture where you are. (1 Peter 2:12).
27:04 A preacher in jail: There are eyes everywhere (Colossians 4:5-6)
29:20 From the abundance of your heart (Luke 6:43-45)
33:15 There is no law outside of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
35:06 Perverse jokes? (Proverbs 4:24)
37:51 Our goal is to bring light (James 3:5-12).
41:04 Do you have the right to use profanity? (1 Corinthians 8:9)
50:55 Trying to be more relatable to people? (1 Peter 1:15-16)
Chapters:
04:30 - Is there any time that profanity is okay?
10:52 - Our words alter the frequency of who we are; what we say is what we do.
13:41 - Who defines what a cuss is?
15:27 - My daughter's experience with profanity in youth camps
17:22 - Vulgarity comes from a wordly expression of anger.
28:29 - Everyone is watching; refrain from your right
30:00 - My experience with cursing
35:45 - Meaning of the letter Shin
47:14 - Do you want to stop cursing?
52:14 - Final thoughts
56:16 - Pray with me.

Thank you pastor Jim, it was so helpful and humbling. I use to have a swearing problem and God healed me from it! He helped me replace swear words with “Owe”, people thought I just bumped into a lot of things. 😂 It is a heart issue, it’s also an example issue. Both of my parents swore and it became a habit when I was young. Praise Yehovah for freeing me from that burden. Now I see other things concerning my frequency I use to do life. May God’s spirit fill me and mine, with purity and healing in all areas! Thank you for moving forward and continuing to do the Work of God!

Jim, I appreciate you so much. Could you do a video about jewelry and make-up? It's not sin. But must all be done in moderation. Just look at the prodigal when the father puts a ring on his sons finger. Look at Esther and her beauty..so many preachers in my coummity are teaching you shouldn't wear jewelry or makeup or a woman can't wear pants etc. Even the men don't wear wedding rings but they want to wear a 1000 apple watch.. Holiness and modesty are important. I dress modest, but it's been troubling me seeing so many Christians get stuck in these groups in my area. So many Christian are being decived by this. Please prayfully consider making a video soon on this. it's really needed! Shalom and bless you.

Shalom and praises be to Yah. It’s sharp and truth. The truth makes us free. We should not fight against the truth but should accept accountability for our wrong doings so God can use us. We are the same rebels yesterday. A rebellious generation. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats” (Matthew 25:32) Thank God for these teachings. Shalom

Thank you for this exhortation to holiness & a higher standard & to seek and walk in a greater measure of Yah's presence & spirit. Evil has become so normalized & His peopke desensitized to it. Political discourse now even has sucken to the lowest level of resorting to cursing. We must come away ever more from the ways of tbe world & feasting on those things & to meditate & delight day & night in Abba, Yeshuah & the Word so we may become fruitful, righteous trees bearing the fruit of Yeshuah & His spirit which should be healing to the nations not destructive. We are choosing life or death with every thought & word & should proceed with such with great fear & trembling. Yah's people must be peculiar/set apart & different than the world. May Abba give us greater power. Love & sound mind to walk in His ways with all our heart soul & strength & exhibit His character, heart, love on earth now. May Yeshuah's kingdom rule & reign in our mind, heart, will & emotions every moment of every day!

Love the teaching and all of your videos. May I make a suggestion?---Even though the background music is not that loud or "bad", it is a serious distraction for me to keep focused on what you are saying. We had a version of Alexander Scourby reading the Bible with some background music and we had to get rid of it because it was too distracting. We have him reading just the plain words and it's sooooo much better and we get much more out of it. I know of others who are bothered by background music, so I just wanted to bring it to your attention. Shalom!

Amen. Thank you 😊. I've felt uncomfortable with certain words I've used that are 'borderline bad' always thinking 'is this offensive to God?' But I never really considered what kind of negative ripple effect it may have on the hearers (and myself) The closer I get to the Lord, and the more time I spend in the secret place with Him, the more the language that the world invented becomes unappealing to me. Thank you Holy Spirit for what is impossible with man, is possible for You (James 3:8) \o/. The Lord has also been delivering me from gossip, which is a tough one for us women. Praying for wisdom to know how to handle it when a friend starts to tell me something that is either not necessary or kind about another person.

I had a mouth that used profanity constantly, but the night I got saved, the holy spirit cleaned my mouth. This transformation in me was the first thing my young daughter noticed, however I was not aware until someone got angry with me and used all the words I used to use, back at me. I came away from the person and charged into the house relaying to my daughter that all this foul language was used at me but I didn't swear back. I couldn't believe what had taken place. So, no we are to be like the master not the world.

Thank you for this very good message! One thing I could not agree with was using certain words in place of the curse words that essentially mean the same thing. I have heard messages about euphemisms over the years and they are just as bad as the original word itself. "Darn" means "damn". Some years back my husband gave a message at Sabbath services on euphemisms too. One word I did replace some other words with was "crumbs" I would say "oh crumbs" I hated the mess that crumbs made, and they could be annoying to clean up, so since it had no relation to any actual curse words, not a euphemism. My mom would say "mind your bees wax when I was a child and I sometimes use "bees wax". I used a very non-controversial and non-offensive word that had no connection to anything bad. Coming from an Italian family, I learned curse words in Italian growing up. I had no idea what most of them meant and was surprised to learn some of their meanings in more recent years. Those had to go as well. The only Italian words I learned growing up had to do with food and curse words. None of us could actually speak Italian. Thank you again for giving this message!

Be careful with substitute words. Years ago, I was around teens and muttered under my breath a substitute word, and one of the teens insisted that I had said the other word. No matter how much I told him I had said the substitute word, he didn't believe me. And it hurt my testimony and respect of the kids. :( But it was a teacher to break me from using the substitute words (and still avoid the offensive words).

This message is so good and in case someone else reads this before watching the video, I must add that it isn't only about cursing. It was great to hear how others responded as they watched you in your walk with God. Several years ago, my grown son told me that my mother and I were the only people he knew who didn't cuss. Like you, when I walked in the world, I cursed right along with those I hung out with. I loved the memes. One of the scriptures that came to my mind is 1 Cor 15 :33. It says, "Don't be deceived. Evil communications corrupt good manners" a.k.a. "Bad company ruins good morals" depending on the various Bible versions. 😇

13 minutes in, Eph. 4:29-32 is quoted. "Corrupt word" might need some clarification. Other versions say, "negative word" or "unwholesome word". Verse 29 goes on to say, "but what is good for necessary edification". Edification basically means building up instead of tearing down. We must be careful about adding to or taking away from God's Words but I think it might be safe to say, "Let no negative word come out of your mouth but what is good for building up, that it might impart grace to those who hear it." Wow...that packed a punch and seems much more personal to me. I can't help but think of how often I complain about something. Yeah...I've got to work on that!

Would Yeshua use profanity? No, of course not...& neither should we (1st John 2:6). When I got saved I put a rubber band around my wrist & snapped myself everytime I swore. We can be just like carnal animals & need to be trained in the flesh. It worked...I snapped out of it!

This could have been a 15-minute sermon. ❤but saying that drinking a beer is going to lead astray some new Christian to be an alcoholic abusive husband is out of context and shouldn't be related to the subject matter.

I believe those would be considered substitute words, not necessarily bad, but something to eventually strive not to use.

Your use of the word frequency makes your teaching sound "new age". You should define what you mean by frequency.

All things have a frequency or a sound and vibration. That’s just science. So when we think, say, and do things we are putting off a frequency that either is in Gods favor or against Him.

B4dwrath. Just because new age has truth doesn't mean it's right. Take all truth and add one drop of poison and the whole thing is poison. Gods Word is Truth
