I was raised a practicing Muslim and remained one for almost half my life. I attended madrassas, that is, Islamic schools, and memorized large parts of the Quran. As a child, I lived in Mecca for a time and frequently visited the Grand Mosque. As a teenager, I sympathized with the Muslim Brotherhood.
At 22 while my family was living in Kenya, my father arranged my marriage to a member of our family clan, a man that I had never met. I ran away, made my way to Holland, studied there and eventually was elected a member of the Dutch parliament. Now I live in the United States.
In short, I have seen Islam from the inside and the outside.
I believe that a reform of Islam is necessary and possible. And only Muslims can make that reform a reality. But we in the West cannot remain on the sidelines as though the outcome of this struggle has nothing to do with us. If the jihadists win and the hope for a reformed Islam dies, the rest of the world will pay a terrible price. The terror attacks in New York, London, Madrid, Paris and many other places are only a preview for what is to come.
For this reason, I believe that it’s foolish to insist, as Western leaders habitually do, that the violent acts committed in the name of Islam can somehow be divorced from the religion itself. For more than a decade, my message has been simple: Islam is not a religion of peace.
When I assert this, I do not mean that Islamic belief makes all Muslims violent. This is manifestly not the case: There are many millions of peaceful Muslims in the world. What I do say is that the call to violence and the justification for it are explicitly stated in the sacred texts of Islam. Moreover, this theologically sanctioned violence is there to be activated by any number of offenses, including but not limited to adultery, blasphemy, homosexuality and apostasy-that is, to leave Islam.
Those who tolerate this intolerance do so at their peril.
As someone who has known what it is to live without freedom, I watch in amazement as those who call themselves liberals and progressives-people who claim to believe so fervently in individual liberty and minority rights-make common cause with the forces in the world that manifestly pose the greatest threats to that very freedom and those very minorities.
In 2014 I was invited to accept an honorary degree from Brandeis University for the work I have done on behalf of women's rights in the Muslim world. That invitation was withdrawn after professors and students protested my criticism of Islam. My subsequent "disinvitation," as it came to be called, was no favor to Muslims-just the opposite. By labeling critical examination of Islam as inherently "racist," we make the chances of reformation far less likely. There are no limits on criticism of Christianity at American universities…or anywhere else for that matter. Why should there be of Islam?
Instead of contorting Western intellectual traditions so as not to offend our Muslim fellow citizens, we need to defend both those traditions and the Muslim dissidents who take great risks to promote them. We should support these brave men and women in every way possible.
Imagine a platform for Muslim dissidents that communicated their message through KZread, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These are the Muslims we should be supporting-for our sake as much for the sake of Islam.

There are two kinds of "preachers"... those who truly believe teachings of their religions and accept world around them is different than people thought. They don't judge world or its people for what they represent or what they look like. They don't care about wealth but takes care of those who are in need of help. They are what you could call "Prophets" or "Holy Man" in mortal form. Then there is the other one, "a wolf in sheep clothes". They are smart ones, those who think usually more with logic than empathy. For these "wolfs" they see religions as profit and tools of power to make people shape world into their own image... Even if it means genocide or pure racism against others. History has taught us how much power churches had from entire countries and kingdom back in past. I don't say that all of religions are evil, but we must remember this. Religion might be thought as sacred book or only true path, but man behind religions are just mortal men with mortal desires. And those desires can twist religions into tools of personal politic. In Islam, there extremist are using religion in brainwashing young and anxious kids and fill them with negative images from their "enemies" and promoting their ways by giving only good parts from Qu'ran. Same has happened with Christianity and many more major religions. So my answer to that question is; They don't lie outsiders about their extreme thought, they lie their own members about their own path of "martyr". And because young mind is easily bendable for angry thoughts, their hate becomes reality to them and only thing they see with no hope for better future in life... We get "Jihadist". A puppet soldier. Kid soldier. Terrorist. People with no hope for better future without claiming it from others.

The only thing Ayaan gets wrong about Islam is in its ability to reform. Ayaan knows it cannot, because those who look after its scriptures have declared it to be unquestionable and unchangeable, and anyone who now tries to change it commits Islamic blasphemy, and so puts their life at risk. Ayaan does know this, but perhaps clings to a hope it could still change. But I believe Ayaan has become Christian now, and so her beliefs on that score may have changed. I wish her well.

There are actually radical buddhists though. I was shocked myself , but there's a very long story about them discriminating muslims in Bangladesh and driving them out of the country. Being married to a men she never met. This is more of an African and Indian problem than a Muslim problem. Forced Marriage is a problem among Christians, Muslims and atheists Africans. In Morocco, I’ve never heard of such Practices and their is no way a Moroccan women would accept such a weird deal. We even had a law in Morocco that beef up penalty’s for domestic violence with a paragraph criminalizing forced marriage which was questioned by Moroccan’s feminist movement as good paragraph but useless paragraph as this was not something they’ve heard off and that the government should do more for salaries equality. I completely understand that she grow up in a society that was Islamic and that society didn’t took care of her. But many people coming from others society’s , with other religion but same poverty level will be society that wouldn’t take care of her. Otherwise, if she felt so African and blame Islam, why did she move to the Nederland’s and then to the US rather than moving to a poor Christian African country ? Because the problems she face wasn’t Islam, the problem she faced was poverty and uneducated societies. I would ad that in a Muslim country , it can be harder as Islam doesn’t have a pope or a chief that dictate the way to practice and moreover, religious text are way to wide to be understood as a whole, so people seem to pick what they like and what they dislike. I did, but I also don't form my opinion solely on this video. Heck, that why I watch PragerU videos in the first place, I hardly ever agree with what their saying but it is important to see an issue from all sides. And just so, I would encourage you to see the issue from both sides. If you study the Bible, you'll find that it does indeed teach love, but if you find so does the Quran if you study it. Likewise, you'll find that the Quran does call people against non believers; but, so to does the Bible. (There are obviously differences between the two scripts in belief, but they are similar in these regrades). So the problem is not in the religion, but in the culture and historical context in which each religion is interpreted around the world. One of my favorite quotes (which I believe applies well here) is "If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.” -Henry Longfellow

BenOfficial i like how you don't agree with some thing but still want to hear both sides :) I personally don't belong to any relegion but i did read Quran and the Bible.. the difference i saw was that that Quran was calling to kill who don't want to convert to islam or they should pay for it if they want to stay around and also to kill homosexuals and woman who have affairs before marriage. And of course not every Muslim is doing exactly what Quran says " so does Christians" .. the problem is not with Muslims but it's in the ideology of that relegion itselfs. There's also some things in Christianity that i don't agree with but at least they don't call to kill others :)

I have never once had a problem with another person's religious preferences, but I do have a BIG issue with another person's religious preference that is built around hurting anyone who doesn't believe in that preference.

I almost agree, but I think we need to separate religion from the government, period. Religion is part of culture and can't be separated from culture. But should be separated from the government, so to allow freedom of religion and choice. Anyone should be allowed to adhere to any religion of choice and exercise faith as he/she wishes, without government interference. Also, religion should not meddle with politics.

Also, the Renaissance was started in Florence, Italy and the Enlightenment started in France. The Scientific Revolution also took place in Europe and gave us the laws of nature. Along with this, the Enlightenment saw Islam as no inspiration as it focused on reason and not religious ideals.

desertodavid Every atheist thinks that at some point. We choose to believe (or disbelieve) in what we believe (or disbelieve) in just as religious folk do. Just as people do, because, you know, we're people too. I understand the fear he/she feels, religions of all types have done horrible things, and so have atheists. People do bad things based on political, economic, and religious beliefs. Don't be offended by that fear. Us atheists used to be burned at the stake by the crusaders and witch hunters, just as Muslims are likely doing that to Jews, pagans, Christians, and Atheists alike, right this very moment. Just use your empathy and think of things from our point of view. There is still a frightening number of people that support the crusades and the crimes against humanity that were committed during that time period. The real question you should be asking is: "why doesn't everyone stop and ask, 'am I wrong?'" Lastly, your sentiment hat we are betting our lives on atheism is kind of ominous, wouldn't you think? That's why we have that hidden fear, because people like you think and say things like that. Other than in the bible, there are no cases of an ateist dying for being an atheist (unless it's murder). I taught ESL at a major university in Utah. There were students of a variety of religious backgrounds, but it was only for the muslims in the school, mostly students in the ESL program, that special concessions were made by the university to allow them to practice their religion during class time. That is all I will say here.

Actually so called scolars who interpreted it moderately The Myth: Muhammad was a peaceful man who taught his followers to be the same. Muslims lived peacefully for centuries, fighting only in self-defense, and only when it was necessary. True Muslims would never act aggressively. The Truth: There shouldn't be any argument over who the "true Muslim" is because the Quran clearly distinguishes the true Muslim from the pretender in Sura 9 and elsewhere. This is one of the Quran's final chapters and it defines the true believer as one who "strives and fights with their wealth and person" while the hypocrites are those who "sit at home," refusing to join the jihad against unbelievers in foreign lands. The reality is that Muhammad organized 65 military campaigns in the last ten years of his life and personally led 27 of them. The more power he attained the smaller the excuse needed to go to battle - until finally he was attacking tribes merely because they were not yet part of his growing empire. Aside from the campaigns, Muhammad ordered the murder or execution of over 50 individuals during a ten-year span, and even the slaughter of several hundred tribesmen in one day. Some of these were elderly people, women and poets slain in their own homes. Apologists bend over backwards to try and dismiss most of the killing as cases of self-defense. In the real world, that defense falls apart after the second or third serial murder, not to mention the 50th. After Muhammad’s death, his successor immediately went to war with former allied tribes which wanted to go their own way. Abu Bakr called them 'apostates' and slaughtered anyone who did not want to remain Muslim. Eventually, he was successful in holding the empire together through blood and violence. The prophet of Islam's most faithful followers and even his own family quickly turned on each other as well. There were four caliphs (leaders) in the first twenty-five years, each of which was a trusted companion of his. Three of these four were murdered. The third caliph was murdered by those allied with the son of the first caliph. The fourth caliph was murdered in the midst of a conflict with the fifth caliph, who began a 100-year dynasty of excess and debauchery that was truncated in a gruesome, widespread bloodbath by descendants of Muhammad’s uncle. Muhammad’s own daughter, Fatima, and his son-in-law, Ali, who both survived the pagan hardship during the Meccan years safe and sound, did not survive Islam after the death of Muhammad. Fatima died of stress from persecution within six months, and Ali was later assassinated by Muslim rivals. Their son (Muhammad’s grandson) was killed in battle with the faction that became today’s Sunnis. His people became Shias. The relatives and personal friends of Muhammad were mixed into both warring groups, which then fractured further into hostile sub-divisions as Islam expanded. Muslim apologists, who like to say that is impossible for today's terrorists to be Muslim when they kill fellow Muslims, would have a very tough time explaining the war between Fatima's followers and Aisha to a knowledgeable audience. Muhammad explicitly held both his favorite daughter and his favorite wife as model Muslim women, yet they were invoked respectively by each side in the violent civil war that followed his death. Which one was the "prophet of God" so horribly wrong about? Muhammad left his men with instructions to take the battle against Christians, Persians, Jews and polytheists (which came to include millions of unfortunate Hindus). For the next four centuries, Muslim armies steamrolled unsuspecting neighbors, plundering them of loot and slaves, and forcing the survivors to either convert or pay tribute at the point of a sword. Some companions of Muhammad lived to see Islam declare war on every major religion in the world in just the first few decades following his death - pressing the Jihad against Hindus, Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, and Buddhists. There is no record of their objection. By the time of the Crusades (when the Europeans began fighting back), the "Religion of Peace" had conquered two-thirds of the Christian world by sword, from Syria to Spain, and across North Africa. Millions of Christians were enslaved by Muslims, and tens of millions of Africans. The Arab slave-trading routes would stay open for 1300 years until pressure from Christian-based countries forced Islamic nations to declare the practice illegal (in theory). To this day, the Muslim world has never apologized for the victims of Jihad and slavery. There is not another religion in the world that consistently produces terrorism in the name of God as does Islam. The most dangerous Muslims are nearly always those who interpret the Quran most transparently. They are the fundamentalists or purists of the faith, and believe in Muhammad’s mandate to spread Islamic rule by the sword, putting to death those who will not submit. In the absence of true infidels, they will even turn on each other. The holy texts of Islam are saturated with verses of violence and hatred toward those outside the faith, as well as the aforementioned "hypocrites" (Muslims who don't act like religious Muslims should). In sharp contrast to the Bible, which generally moves from relatively violent episodes to far more peaceful mandates, the Quran travels the exact opposite path (violence is first forbidden, then permitted, then mandatory). The handful of earlier verses that speak of tolerance are overwhelmed by an avalanche of later ones that carry a much different message. While Old Testament verses of blood and guts are generally bound by historical context within the text itself, Quranic imperatives to violence usually appear open-ended and subject to personal interpretation. From the history of the faith to its most sacred writings, those who want to believe in "peaceful Islam" have a lot more to ignore than do the terrorists. By any objective measure, the "Religion of Peace" has been the harshest, bloodiest religion the world has ever known. In Islam there is no peace unless Muslims have power - and even then...

Religion doesn't need to be peaceful, as it's the cross between a cultural guide and a political tool. What point is there having a peaceful religion. Zoroastrianism was relatively peaceful yet now since it has no influence it has ended up numbering less than a hundred thousand or so followers and is rapidly decreasing.

Falamu445 That's relative to the situation. Is killing wrong? In the animal world it's not really, and religion has served a purpose as a means of controlling the masses and in some cases having a relatively okay set of rules that would help society to survive. However, since times have changed, and the need for religion has become more of a hostile conservation of the culture that has become merged with these religions, it's ended up being soured. In particular, Islam is rather barbaric, but no more barbaric than Christianity/Judaism. Though the reformation forced the church which had been abusive and exploitative (necessary things at the time for the survival itself, like an animal in the environment) and turned it into a less powerful force politically. Ultimately it's done a lot of bad, but nothing in the world is good, we're kidding ourselves if religion is the source of evil, when it's just a set of beliefs that humans choose to ignore or totally advocate for. We aren't evil either, we're just dumb animals who think that we're smart because we poop in the bowl and wear clothes despite the fact we don't always need to.

Everybody opposed the Nazis because it was a political ideology, but since Islam has a religious component is somehow protected by the first amendment, very clever if you ask me, and they exploit this almost to perfection. You can't make human sacrifice just because of freedom of religion. However, the plague of shadowbanning has not spread to the notification system, so I can respond somewhat. I agree with the premise that it’s just a throwaway line meant to sound intelligent more than anything however.

if islam is inherently problematic wydm by reform? it's take or leave. reformed Islam is not Islam. if a religion is bad, why try to keep a mangled version of it?
"-our freedoms are not optional." Needs to be said a little louder in the back for those in the back of the class.
