Independent, or "Indie" music, has a broad definition that can be applied across genres and regions. So what makes indie music indie?
LA Buckner interviews Quinn Christopherson, an up-and-coming indie musician in Anchorage, Alaska and 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner, about what it's like to create DIY music. Together they create their own indie song that you can hear at the end of the video.

yeah, it's hard to define "indie" since it just means independent. There's so many different "Genres" of Indie music: indie-pop, indie-rock, indie-hip-hip, indie-fusion-metal-jazz

A video I would love to see is one unpacking the trend of songs just getting to their peak as they fade. You know when a song gets really crazy right when it starts fading away, it was a much bigger thing from like the 60's-80's (a good example is I want you back). I would love to know why and where this started.

It means produced independently, usually the artist as record label, and publisher. Indie music, just like mainstream, commercial music, has all genres in it. The main difference in Indie music is the authenticity and integrity of the artist's vision remains mostly in tact, without the industry pressures to make it "popular".

to me, it’s all about the way the artist is marketed. for example, people like halsey and billie eilish are marketed heavily as alternative and indie, yet have an almost identical sound to those on the top 40 pop charts. it’s about the legacy and reputation of the artist

It’s taken me a long time to get my head around the modern meaning of indie music. Growing up, indie music was stuff that labels didn’t want to touch. SST records with Black Flag and the Minutemen were my canonical examples. So much of what I hear these days on “indie” playlists sound like modern adult contemporary music. Get yourself a small guitar and some facial hair and you’re in. This video lumped Neutral Milk Hotel and the Smiths together and now I don’t know what to think about the indie label.

I've missed yall so much. 3. this is why as a punk growing up I've loved indie music/ the indie movement (as I would as call punk since alot of genres can fall under punk, maybe would be a cool video to talk about genres/movements/etc and how they can mesh or be specified) and so this summer I am def showing my students this video. We will be talking about protest music and a HUGE part of that is DIY. So my kids will be listening to Frank Ocean, Sex Pistols, Gorilla Buscuits, Neutral Milk Hotel and more!!!
