Grew up off of east 38th Street back in the day. Wasn't nowhere near as violent and crime filled as it is now. But all of Indy is crime ridden. Pray for our city but let's all talk solutions. What do we do about reducing the crime and violence though?

Yep, west side 38th street is where it's at lol. Quick access to the nice towns like Brownsburg or Lebanon, or to do things in the city if you want. The Speedway area is really great (except for exactly two weeks from now when our entire half of the city goes one-way gridlock for the race).

I grew up in Indianapolis in several different areas until my family moved to St Louis Mo after i turned 13 in 1984. We lived off 38th and Mitthoefer Rd. We lived in the Three Fountains apartments. Spent many times at Washington Square Mall which when I visited my grandma just last October was really almost a ghost town compared to when I lived there. We went to places like Music Palace and the Liberty Bell Flea Market. I have lots of fond memories from all those years ago. It is so sad how all those places have been run down.

i am from Indianapolis and so familiar with 38th street. had to click on the video

People just are not growing up. They are still stuck in their teens when they get older. I grew up in Indianapolis and hung out in areas where nobody would dare today. Children in adult bodies. We just need someone with some courage to tell people when they are wrong instead of accepting everything. I am 47 and had a great friend off of 38th that I would pick up for work and drop off late at night with no problems. She was mature and so was I, that is why we were okay. Nowadays we have children in adult bodies controlling everything. I walked to school and had several problems but I am still alive so no harm.

I lived in Indy until 2008, then moved out to the country. Last place I lived was in the Eagle Creek area, where I could go sailing at the reservoir. It had nice neighborhoods and Rick's Boatyard with the outdoor bar looking over the water and live jazz. The Marsh grocery stores, including the one you drove by, were terrific until the owner, Don Marsh, died and his kids ruined it. Before that, Marsh had its own bakery, excellent rye breads, coffee cakes, hot cross buns, as good as any boutique market, also good produce and meats. Back then the apartment complexes and neighborhoods around there were nicely landscaped and clean, places where young professional lived. Once you cross over I-465, the cityscape turns sketchy, as the video shows. Lots of strip malls in varying states of upkeep, car dealerships and franchise retail. That area is also known for its ethnic restaurants of every stripe due to a lot of immigrants living around there. I lived about a mile from 38th and Lafayette Rd until 2000. It wasn't the most appealing place, but I never had any problems around there, and the good food was a bonus. It's probably worse now. 38th St parallels I-65 for about a mile before they diverge, then it goes through a greenway/park area (there are several city parks along the White River that are connected) that is sketchy, as in you probably don't want to get off 38th st and drive through them at night. You can see what the original planners had in mind, if only the city had the money to maintain the parks properly. There are also some very cool neighborhoods around White River north of 38th St with huge yards that look more like New England countryside than Midwest city. East of Crown Hill cemetery, 38th St was once a desirable address. Lots of beautiful old homes and classy brownstone apartment buildings in the area. It always seemed like the original elegance of the area and urban blight had come to a standoff there, with neither side gaining the upperhand. One street would be really nice, and a few blocks away, the neighborhood was rundown. Same with the Fall Creek area. Overall, Indy has a lot of areas that are mixes of nice streets and nasty streets not far apart.

I moved to Indy in 2000. & I can truly see that it has changed. But you have to be real w/ yourselves. In every city there is crime. Some more than others but drugs are everywhere. Poverty is just about everywhere. So wherever these 2 things are you will have/see these problems. I live S Indy in which is cool but crime is everywhere. What bothers me is everyone that does a story or mention Nap always focus on East side primarily post/Mith area. & true it has been a problematic area. But 10th & rural area is just as bad. There are lots of areas West. There are areas south, North the whole damn city. I have a citizens app & I look at all areas of the city because I have family all over the city. But because the city not wanting 8.nto distract new comers/visitors they only focus & show the side where the many blks & or lower income families are at. In which West/ side has just as many problem areas as east. Every thing doesn't make it to the news. North / South has its fair share of problems as well. So the city as a whole. I blame social media for a lot of the killings. Its called street justice & retaliations. It's sad & senseless & are youth are dying younger & younger. THE k2, drugs& pills are the blames of the many robberies. Not to mention the many jobs lost / Covid. So crime is Everywhere & it not a blk issuse. Its a Nations issue.

I’ve lived here for nearly 40 years and when an area has always been rough then it is really rough. Out by 30th and post it used to be better but it started going downhill fast in the mid 90s. Yea 10th in Rural is rough but also close to that historic area Irvington which is nice near Washington st. Drugs and crime are not everywhere though. I lived just a mile south of Ripple and I don’t recall hearing a single gunshot in 20 years or any crime really the whole time. On the south side had to deal with some. 38th and Sherman someone is shooting practically every night. There are pockets you won’t see any crime. There are a lot of safe areas. The city is spotty like that. Almost got carjacked on 40th and Guilford which is less than a mile from the good spot I grew up in.

I lived in Eagle Creek about 5 years ago, it seemed decently nice while I was there. Although I did feel unsafe in that Lafayette Square Mall the one time I went there, really rundown. Didn't know so many businesses had closed in the area since then. If you're in the area, highly recommend Rick's Boatyard Cafe, amazing views and food.

Lafayette used to be a really fun mall when I was a teenager. The stores were a carried more “urban”, funkier clothing. That was the seen and be seen mall especially before big events like Expo and Classic.

I've lived here 62 years and it is very dangerous, you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times and avoid making yourself a target, lock your car doors when your in it always, look around the area before getting out in parking lots.

I've lived in Indy my entire life and have always lived in the dead center of 46218 and never really understood how bad it was until this video. I hear gunshots while I'm on the porch and don't even blink. There was a SWAT raid down the street from me only hours after a police shootout a few blocks away and I was more concerned about the idiot who cut me off on my way home from work. It's saddening. Also surprised you didn't mention the tire destroyer from Sherman Dr. to Emerson. In my 22 years of living here I have never seen that road fixed.

I lived in Indianapolis from 80-92...on the north side...I worked in the downtown area...sometimes late into the night...I'd walk around downtown at night...never had any problems...u rarely heard about any kind of violent crime back then...but after seeing several of these videos...I have no desire to go back

I moved to Indianapolis from Kokomo, IN in 1987. Prior to moving it was a big deal to drive to the "city" to shop at either Lafayette Square Mall or Castleton Square Mall. Both were great options at the time. I wouldn't dare enter Lafayette Square now! I used to work off 38th St just west of I465 and would occasionally pick up something I needed from Macy's, but I would look all around before getting out of my car, look under upon returning, and lock my doors as soon as I got back in. Speaking of "rural" in the city, I used to take horseback riding lessons at Falcon Run Farms located around W 46th and Highschool Rd. When the owner died it all went to residential. 😢

Speedway isn't as bad as Haughville or other parts of the west side, but it's far from the greatest.

Chris, I love the way you change the music whenever a particular type of car shows up ....😉😂. I grew up an hour west of Indy (Terre Haute), and we would go there quite often to spend a day at Lafayette Square, and out to eat, a movie, or watch the jets take off at the airport (free entertainment back in the 60's). Now, my husband's family lives there, although I have never spent much time in the NE quadrant. I recognized most of the larger street names you covered.

Also ..note .crown hill..also laid to rest .John Dillanger ..John Whitcomb Riley. And the ordinal owner of the Indianapolis colts . Irsay..I've been to crown hill many times.its a beautiful place to be laid to rest..love your Chanel .

Great video and to be honest what’s going on in Indy is a nationwide trend that plagues most US cities, pick one and you’ll see it’s no different. Indy has its good parts though. Carmel, Fishers, Geist,Westfield, Brownsburg,Avon and Plainfield are all good places to live and raise a family. Like I said you can find examples in most cites

@@mindhunter8772 haha exactly the ones who can afford their drug problem. Those are all suburbs and of course they're gonna be nice they cost too much to live in. But no there's some decent pockets inside 464 too though. Beech Grove is a nice little pocket of low crime, wider city streets and alleys. Broad ripple has some petty crime like theft but pretty nice, fountain square and bates hendricks is heavily gentrifying to the point not even young middle class can even afford pushing any lower class out so it's becoming nice again. Woodruff place, a few spots along Pleasant Run parkway or Fall Creek. And the Old Historic Northside of course just North of 65 where it cuts through downtown and college and meridian mansions

I was going to move to indy until I saw how dangerous it was. Coming from chicago, the crime is light but still very dangerous. People like me are sick and tired of criminals destroying cities/neighborhoods.

The main reason why you get a suburban and even a country feel while driving through portions of the city of Indianapolis, is because of the merger of Indy and Marion County on New Year's Day in 1970. With the exception of a few "excluded" cities and towns, practically everything within the county's 403 square miles became Indianapolis proper. Prior to that, you could probably compare the land area of Indy to Toledo or Buffalo.

That's absolutely correct. It's also very unusual. It makes Indianapolis look a lot bigger on paper. People don't understand that. Tampa, FL is clearly a MUCH larger city than Indianapolis. Way bigger metro area, Bigger economy, just more people. But people will argue that Indianapolis is bigger because technically it is.

weird narrator lol but great video and full of nostalgia. i grew up right off of 38th street, and used to spend soooo much time up and down the area. went to school out past greenwood, and used to party on the east side around arlington....it was already kinda wild in the 80's early 90's, and so much hasn't changed. That's one thing i picked up on when i was way young. i did *not* want to be one of the cats playing the same game of ball at tarkington park. As i've gotten older, though, i've learned to respect the struggle though...it can be tough to break cycles.

I have lots of family in Naptown! I visited Nap a few times, last time was 2018. It is a huge city! You can put Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Gary, Hammond, and East China together, and Indianapolis would still be bigger in area. In fact in area Indianapolis is bigger than Chicago. I enjoyed your video ty for sharing.

When I moved to nap in 2002 the west side was the side of town to be on. Lafayette square mall still had major dept. Stores like sears and American eagle it was awesome but now hmmm there are no words to describe how bad it looks damn

Every major city is dangerous at the end of the day... some are just so much more dangerous than the rest that cities like Indy don’t get talked about in terms of crime.

Indianapolis has good areas and bad areas. Basically there is a pocket to the northeast of downtown that is dangerous and a bigger one to the east/northeast of downtown. The suburbs are safe and so is most of the south side and far north side. Heck even a lot of the west side and east side is completely safe. Downtown is nice too. Go a few blocks north of where he drives here in the first half of the video and there are million dollar plus home.

Since we're talking about crime here...I'll just throw this out there...John Dillinger was also buried at Crown Hill Cemetery...

I talked to the chief of police for Indianapolis and he said that most of the criminals that are caught are from Gary, Chicago.

Kokomo has recently built NUMEROUS projects and our ex mayor welcomed Chicagoans to come live in our city and offered them a discount special rate for like 6 months if they rented.....they list mugshots of arrests everyweek, 60-70% of the violent crimes/drug related arrests are from Chicago, Harvey, Detroit.....and the drugs have flooded in

I grew up on the south side off Troy and Keystone. Frequently visited my aunt in Decatur off Kentucky Ave, and lived in apartments all over the south side of Indianapolis down to Southport Rd. I visited last year and all of these areas are shells of what they used to be. Most of my whole family still lives in the metro, but they've all fled to Avon, Brownsburg, Plainfield. Even my Greenwood peeps have all relocated further south to Whiteland/Franklin. Cool that you used to live near that Marsh. I remember when they were all over the city. Great video.

Indy isn't that bad. It's pretty bad, but it's a well rounded city. We've got our rough neighborhoods, crime is up, drug use is up, there's busted roads in every corner of the county. But Indy has life to it. Broad Ripple Ave, Fountain Square, museums, the zoo, the track, the bars, the canal. There's something for almost everyone in Indy. We got sports. Pacers, Colts, Fever, Eleven, Fuel, Indians. Sit on a corner long enough and you're bound to see a drag race. The schools don't have enough money to properly care for the kids. The entire city is under construction. There's a surprising lack of grocery stores anywhere. Indy may be getting more dangerous, but the people here are pretty good. Indy can be a horrible city or a fantastic city depending on what you look at. Make sure you get a pork tenderloin while you're in town. And a donut from Long's.

Lived in central indiana my whole life until moving to the east coast in fall 2018 because the job market/economy was terrible especially for young graduates. I can confirm that Indianapolis is going downhill in some parts, whereas some isolated area in the center of the city are actually being gentrified to an extent. The crime seems to be actually worse in the outskirts of indianapolis around the 465 ring and beach grove and cumberland, and even greenwood is starting to go down the shitter now. Lots of slum landlords and derelict apartments, MANY of these apartments look FAR worse on the inside than they do the outside, they sucker people in with low rent only to jack the rates up once they think you can not afford to leave.

Moved to Indy summer 2019. Coming from Jackson, Ms i can honestly say living in Indy is not that bad. The crime is no where near the same as back home, and there are a lot of job opportunities for those who try to stay on the straight and narrow. The local food is kinda ass, but with a little searching it’s not impossible to find a gem here and there. And the Pacers have really been growing on me 😂. And I live out east 10th and Arlington and I haven’t had to deal with anything personally and rarely see any crimes occurring.

If your looking for a good burger try Workingman's Friend on N Belmont Ave & for some pretty decent fresh local donuts try Long's Bakery on N Tremont Street both spots are cash only & for the top birria tacos in the city try La 5th Tacos on E Minnesota Street for some ok quality BBQ try King Ribbs all 3 locations serve the same food & Bar-B-Q Heaven but idk if you'll approve being pleased of those bbq places you did live in the South right? Home of the best BBQ in the country.

I lived near Moller Road and Pike Plaza for a number of years, it was absolutely horrible. I moved to Speedway in 2012, and now Speedway has gone way downhill. I hear gunshots fairly often, people and businesses keep getting robbed. I haven’t gone to a store or even a fast food restaurant in Speedway I’m years because I don’t feel safe. I plan on moving somewhere in Hendricks county.

I lived on the East Side for seven years (we were near Shadeland and 16th, and moved almost four years ago). Oaktree was terrible and I remember when they tore them down. However, I loved Indy and do miss living there in some ways. We'll be visiting family in the East side tomorrow.

I don't know why the problem of run-down & abandoned areas is so pronounced in the United States of America, more so than other English speaking countries...In Australia, real estate is so expensive & valued that everything is snapped up quickly. We do have small pockets of lower socioeconomically challenged areas, but nothing on the same scale as the USA....Canada would be in the same category as Australia...Why is the USA so unique in having areas that are allowed to fall into a state of social unrest & disrepair, yet it is far less problematic or prevalent in Canada, Australia, New Zealand. Ireland & the United Kingdom ⁉️

I remember in the late 90s before the neighborhood revitalization program on the northeast side just outside of downtown. The worst neighborhood was 25th street from Fall Creek river through Brightwood to almost Massachusetts Ave.
