Is Iceland's Blue Lagoon A Lavish Luxury? | Destination Debunkers

INSIDER's A.C. Fowler heads to Iceland's Blue Lagoon, a natural hot spring. Is it a lavish luxury or an overpriced public pool?
The Blue Lagoon is in Grindavík, a 45-minute drive from Iceland's capital Reykjavík, a quickly growing tourist hot spot. The area is a perfect blend of city and country living.
A.C. tests how crowded it is, if it's worth the $58 admission, and if the lagoon's water and mud really have healing properties.
The Blue Lagoon is one of the most visited destinations in Iceland. 80% of tourists who come to the country trek to the famous thermal waters.
While the physical lagoon is man-made, the natural geothermal waters are sourced from a nearby geothermal field.
The peak season is the summer, so the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon is in the winter.
CEO Grímur Sæmundsen said, "To be in the Blue Lagoon and having the Northern Lights, there's nothing that beats it."
The Blue Lagoon also acts as a facility for skin care research, so it makes sense that its biggest selling point is its natural silica mud masks.
Make sure you head to the lagoon early in the day to beat the crowds. Keep it mind that it can be pricey, so make sure you're picking a package that fits your needs. And don't be afraid to lather on the complimentary silica masks.

The Blue Lagoon was totally worth it. I loved the small, local geothermal pools around the country that were affordable but the Blue Lagoon was so beautiful and special. The silica in their geothermal pools really does improve your skin and there is something therapeutic about going from freezing temperatures to warm water and back to freezing. While I was there my skin was gorgeous and I felt so good!

as an Icelander, I recommend the Blue Lagoon. It might be a little expensive. But there aren't a whole lot of lagoons in Iceland safe enough to dip in. Plus The BL has the facility for showers etc. You should go. It is real nice and you skin will feel so good after it. Leave the later lagoons for photos, as they can be too hot to go in!

I used to work there (the Lava restaurant) and believe me it's a good thing it's so overpriced- the crowds are UNBELIEVABLE. They hiked the price and limited available tickets and it got a lot better. They even started charging just to enter the building to look at the lagoon. It was so crowded from tourists stopping by just to take pictures, guests and staff could barely breathe and it really impeded the service we were able to provide. People also used to try and sneak in without paying, and funny enough the restaurant staff were usually the ones that caught them since the restaurant has an entire glass wall view over the lagoon. Just remember to reserve in advance!!

Years ago - before the tourists - you got the body salts for free as they were in buckets alongside the pool. It was nice sitting up along side the pool and rub the salt all over - jump in - and repeat. I don't know about the mud. I forget the admission price back then in the early '00s but the $60 or so is absolutely worth it; if you want to waste money get the robe that you only have to return - though not for me. Recently, we have not had the time for the Blue Lagoon but your video ignited good memories, especially when we were last there when the air temp was a rare (for southern Iceland) zero (0) F with a breeze - - and now we have to return! CAUTION, I do not advise testing lava springs to skimp on lagoons. Thanks!

i recently went on a school trip to iceland where i visited the geothermal power station that the blue lagoon water goes through. it’s super funny that the workers there call the blue lagoon ‘waste water’ as the silica is picked up from when the water goes down into the earth and then is used in the power station. i didn’t actually go in the blue lagoon even though we walked around it however, we went to the secret lagoon which was a really nice alternative (but wasn’t blue!!)

I’ve been to the blue lagoon before they have a caffe with phone protectors and face mask with a bar in the lagoon! There are molten lava rocks above too! The water is a mix of fresh water and ocean waters and the chemicals make it that colour too. When I got my mineral white mask the lady there told me not to put it near my eyes as well and when you wanan wash it off there is like a sink in the lagoon where you can do it.

I went here for a few hours in august 2019. My hair turned to literal straw for days. I followed all the guidance of lathering your hair with the conditioner given in the showers but it still happened, just be wary of that if you visit. There is a bar to get free or paid face masks and also a bar to buy drinks floating in the pool, the banana smoothie is the best there.

That smell is called sulfa, where I live in outback Australia we have a natural hot spring in our town, it's man made but the water that comes up is natural and naturally hot. We call it at bore bath bc the water comes from the bore under the ground. The ones here aren't that pretty colour but probably have the same mineral properties, and are free and get cleaned from algae weekly.👍
