Is hydroquinone safe? Q&A with a dermatologist| Dr Dray

Today I address the safety of hydroquinone and answer your questions about hydroquinone causing cancer and liver damage.
This is an excellent comprehensive review article discussing the studies I mention here, as well as many others. The references cited in this paper overlap with studies mentioned in this video:
Levitt, J. The safety of hydroquinone: a dermatologist's response to the 2006 Federal Register. J Am Acad Dermatol. 2007 Nov;57(5):854-72. Epub 2007 Apr 27.

Wow thank you for making this video! I’m from Canada and over here , the hydroquinone is always through a prescription in a compound with other ingredients ! I had it sitting there in my fridge in fear it might cause 1001 problems internally and externally because of the lack of information I had! But thank you! I have terrible melasma which has really affected me and my family doctor told me that the hydroquinone would definitely help! Now I’m going to try it out! Thank you!!!!!

Can you please do a "Dermatologist reacts to skin hack video" I don't know if you heard of these so called skin hacks some of them even put vagisil on their face and one puts black pepper and potato underneath the eyes apparently for dark circles. You do realize that to get the same 2% concentration of Hydroquinone from something like a pear or coffee, you have to find some way to concentrate the crap out of it which may end up being detrimental to the skin. I think pears have like 4-15 ppm of Hydroquinone. 2% would be 20,000 ppm. It would be cheaper to just buy an over-the-counter Hydroquinone cream.

OMG! Dr. Dray! This is awesome information! After many promptings from family, friends, etc, I decided to go to a dermatologist regarding the dark patch on my forehead. I explained that I noticed the patch spreads more when I'm in the sun. She prescribed a hydroquinone topical cream (4%), and a tretinoin topical cream (5%), because of my MELASMA. She also said I should use sunscreen. In the past, I was leery of using sunscreen because I have normal-to-oily skin. I know better now. Anywho, that appointment was in October, and I've been researching hydroquinone ever since, simply because of those fears you addressed.

This was super interesting and informative. I rarely watch 20+ min. long videos, but the way you explain things is just so knowledgeable! I was recently prescribed hydroquinone by my own Dermatologist after I've dealt with some hyper-pigmentation on my face from Pro-Active treatment back in high school back when they used to run the ads for all the teenagers like me to see, feel self-conscious, then run and go tell their parents. Pro-Active's products in exchange for that "gold fix all deal for just $19.99" (a load of bullsh*t) actually ending up burning and discoloring my skin. Fast forward to 5 years later I'm really happy with the way my skin looks and has healed now but, with the hydroquinone treatment I think my skin tone will finally be fully evened out again. I'm glad I found this video because it really helped to alleviate a lot of my concerns about what I was putting on my skin which I'm very careful of these days. Thank you Dr.Dray, definitely earned the sub!

I enjoyed this coverage and I'm going to use hydroquinone (4% prescription on Monday). From the view of something like the 10 Step Korean, should hydroquinone be grouped as a spot treatment, so after serum but before eye cream in the morning, and before mask at night? Should I pair it with retinol? Thank you!
