Is Hello Fresh Really "Cheaper Than Groceries"??

Is there any truth to the marketing claim Hello Fresh is making that its food-delivery service is cheaper than grocery shopping?

Marketing themselves as a cheaper option is absurd. Probably plays into peoples’ guilt after throwing out fresh produce that got forgotten. It’s definitely much more expensive! My son and daughter in law will order from some food service company on occasion. It’s a good way for him to prepare a nice meal for her, as a treat. Or a special date night when they prepare a meal together. I think they wait until they get a discount offer. You did a great job showing just how much more expensive it is!

Another way to "play their game" is to add to that Walmart list until you equal what their cost is for that box. Now, spending the $49.99 and you have added more tofu, some beans, more rice etc you will continue to use up the spices and eat for a week or two!! What bogus claims they make!

What Hello Fresh is also not considering when boasting about no food "waste," is the surplus of packaging/wrapping/containers required for their shipped packages --- over and over and over. Of course, maybe they are using ALL bio-degradable materials that return without a trace back into the earth and not the landfill. You do a great job of breaking down true cost/true value ratios. And you empower, especially less "seasoned" cooks, to realize their capabilities of preparing good food at a great price per meal.

I would use the leftover jasmine rice as the basis for a stir fry made with some leftover red onion, carrot and 1/2 bell pepper from my fridge and sauté in a little leftover vegetable stock. I would add a bit of Thai sweet chili sauce, garlic powder, and a small bit of white wine vinegar to make a sauce to moisten it up a bit. Next I would make more rice as a base for a vegetable curry using the curry powder, coconut milk, more carrot and a sweet potato or regular potato from home, turmeric, hot pepper flakes. I would make a Mexican style salad with romaine lettuce as a base, I would use some canned black beans from home seasoned with the leftover taco seasoning and some garlic powder moistened with a tiny bit of leftover veg broth over top and then add leftover guacamole, red onion and cilantro. Top with leftover tortilla chips. Lastly I would make a bit of soup with the leftover vegetable broth, garlic powder, a bit of frozen celery tops, carrot and potatoes, add a can of diced tomatoes from my pantry and serve it with rice that I made.

Agreed 100% Jay. Coconut milk & rice baked together. Veggie stock, guac & a bit of taco spice &blend as a soup. Rice, taco spice, cumin, garlic turmeric, cilantro & red onion for Spanish rice. Thai sweet chili sauce is good on the blue tort chips too. Curry, coconut milk, onion, cilantro, turmeric over rice. You could use the crushed red pepper in all above except coconut baked rice dish. This is like an exercise i do all the time to extend what we have. The spices are the trick that helps to expand basic ingredients. Actually my daughter & I did this challenge together when she thought she was getting a good deal. We broke it down like you did to see that buying individual components & then blending them in different ways was much cheaper & we were able to make sure we were eating things that were good for us. I think making enough for 4 and going double on the protein and most of the non-perishables would be left. Or making a tortilla soup with another protein and a can of tomatoes and some corn. Also making a different curry with garbanzo beans and potatoes. But the way you eat cooking for 2 is inefficient. You like leftovers and curry taste better on day 2. Honestly the way I shop and plan it’s not a savings but I know Flourishing Miranda uses the boxes for date night. If you’re comparing this restaurant food it’s a savings but not home cooking. I wonder if the price difference for meat eaters or vegetarians would be a savings.

Their claims of being 75% cheaper than a grocery store are ridiculous! The extras could very easily be repurposed into many different meals. Without much thought at all, I’d use the coconut milk to make oatmeal with chia seeds, flax, cinnamon and frozen blueberries thinning it out with water to get at least 2 servings of overnight oats. Then I’d pickle the red onions with the vinegar and some garlic powder and salt and sugar to top some sweet chili glazed tofu served on a big salad using whatever produce I had at the time. Lentil curry over rice or roasted potatoes is always a staple here. Finally I’d make a taco style soup with the taco seasoning, rice, beans from the pantry, frozen corn, the leftover broth, some extra water and seasoning. I’d serve it topped with guacamole, crushed tortilla chips and any pickled onions that might be leftover from the big tofu salads. I’d probably easily get 4 more servings from this soup. I can’t imagine the extra ingredients I used (assuming they weren’t already in my pantry, freezer or fridge) would cost more than the $10 overage on the box cost vs Walmart plus the $10 shipping fee. Another great video!!

Hi J 🤗 I have watched a few videos here on YT with folks doing exactly what you suggested and they had a ton of leftover food and no it was never cheaper. Convenient yes, but cheaper no. Out of these leftover ingredients I would make some black bean nachos with the Tortilla chips guac red onion cilantro and taco seasoning. I could also make some coconut curry with chick peas or red lentils and use up that coconut milk, cilantro curry powder, veggie stock turmeric and serve that with Jasmine rice. If I had a lot of red onion I would pickle some in the white wine vinegar too! I would make a stir fry and use up any veggies I had in the fridge and season my tofu with that Thai sweet chili sauce and some garlic powder and serve that with the jasmine rice or make a fried rice out of it with the same ingredients. Cilantro can be used as a fresh garnish on all these recipes.

Hmmm.. looking at those ingredients I’d probably spend an extra $0.98 at Walmart & get 6 eggs so I could use up the left over cilantro, guacamole, red onion, tortilla chips, stock, & seasonings & make either migas, chilaquiles, or shakshouka (or all 3 😂 since hello fresh only planned me meals for 2 days!😮) with a big old side of Mexican rice. I always have a can of tomato paste or passata or diced tomatoes etc tucked in the pantry so I think it would be possible 👍❤️ love how you were like “aww hell no” & did all that math & work to prove them wrong J 👏🙌 your the best! Love how your always looking out for people - that you don’t want people to get scammed or taken advantage of. You have a kind, big heart (I will admit that I track my food waste spending, cause I’m nerdy like that, & last month it ended up being about $6 a week. But I think, even taking that into account Walmart would still be cheaper. Plus I mean your produce would be fresher shopping local at Walmart. I never did those boxes because I was too concerned about food poisoning from the box not being kept at 40 degrees or lower in transit, or moldy produce. I mean how are you going to make the meals if the veg or meat arrives gross & spoiled 🤷‍♀️ then you gotta fuss with them for a rebate, spending god knows how long on the phone, & go to the store anyway to replace the items that went off in transit. Seems like a big headache & more trouble than it’s worth. Just my 2 cents)

These meal service companies try to justify those excessive savings claims by taking the highest gas prices (regionally prices vary a LOT), the highest costs for the food items (top brand names at specialty stores with the highest unit cost) and a high wage (time spent shopping instead of working) / time saved. Being frugal isn't about being cheap it's about being fiscally responsible and getting the best value. Guac on toast, as well as seasoned lentils and rice are options.

I was visiting with a friend who was gifted some Hello Fresh meals... in addition to the overpriced ingredients, the serving sizes were super small. I was not at all full after eating the small portions they provided. To make matters worse, the instructions were fiddly and confusing, so that it took 2 of us over an hour to prepare the dishes as they had instructed. We have a supermarket here called "Fresh Market", which is on par with Whole Foods on steroids... so I suppose buying all overpriced specialty items you could run up a bill to match their prices. And I guess if you prorated the milage of driving a super expensive new sports car to buy the stuff, you could justify the shipping. I do wish there was a way to stop them from this false advertising, but I guess as with most things, "Let the buyer beware!"

I have a pretty large stockpile of prep, so it be super easy for me, but it would be easy for you as well. I’ve seen the things that you have on hand I would definitely say make a vegan taco bowl you could use the chips use some of the spices use the rice use beans use some other seasonings. If you have them on hand, top them with guacamole, any kind of salsa, or any vegan topping that you have, that would be amazing! Also do a Mexican casserole put a bunch of things into your casserole everything but the kitchen sink keep it vegan top it with vegan cheese and bake! It’s kind of having a Mexican casserole and you can use up a lot of that! You definitely made the understanding here at the end, and I know I jumped in before hand, but you’re absolutely right the items that you buy at Walmart will be a lot more quantity wise and what HelloFresh gives you, so therefore exactly my point as well You’re going to get more bang for your buck you’ll be able to create more than four meals in fact, I think you could get six or even eight portions of meals out of what you have maybe a little bit more with rice but I think you would get double what HelloFresh gives you for the small price. I would suggest sending this video over to HelloFresh promotion Center and basically tell them if they don’t pull off the FAQ for the lies that they create that this could generally be turned in as false advertisement! Thank you for bringing this out so many KZreadrs will jump on the bandwagon just to try to get other people to purchase a HelloFresh because they’re being sponsored and they’re getting paid to put out lies that eventually make other families think they should be buying it because they like the KZreadr Yet they don’t follow general common sense! I appreciate this video I love that you called at HelloFresh and I say buy the items double the meals and you should get eight portions, but those are the two meals I would definitely make with what you have left over I also want to mention that I am blind. I have a Aldi a mile from my house. I know if I took an Uber to go up to either Aldie or Walmart, which are not too far apart at least 1 mile Walmart is almost 2 it does cost me seven dollars each way in an Uber so the fees would be cheaper on HelloFresh to deliver to my house but the groceries, for family for like mine no way! If I were to walk to Aldie and at least have a Uber back, it would only cost me seven dollars putting me under the budget of what HelloFresh would do for delivery as well! I would have to take my son since again I can’t navigate that kind of distance being blind on busy streets. Also last but not least you could do vegan wraps with all that you have beans, salsa, guacamole, vegan, sour cream. If you have it any kind of fresh veggies, you have in the fridge throw them in crush up the chips throw those in and make you a vegan crunchy wrap 16:35

I gone through seasons where prepared foods is my best option because what is going on in my life. When I am doing more scratch cooking, then yes grocery shopping is cheaper. It all depends on your cooking/grocery habits. Also groceries cost different prices in different parts of the country. They may be comparing to grocery prices to a more expensive area. Also the federal per mile rate is 58.5 cents per mile which woukd add to your cost estimate. I do think 75% savings is not accurate, but not everyone cooks from scratch. So for some yes it is probably cheaper.

Groceries definitely do cost more (or less) depending on where you live: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oGho0ZZvhsLTfJc.html And, at $0.58/mile, the average trip to and from the grocery would be $4.64, so more but not $9.99. I don't know if you have a Kroger near you, but, if you do, you might look near the deli section for prepared meals. Mine sometimes has boxes or bags of a whole set of dinner ingredients for 4 people, usually priced around $10. At my store, you can get them in a pick-up order (or delivery), and it might save you some money when you're doing more prepared food than stratch cooking, given what life is throwing at you.

Meals from what is on this list with what I have in my house using the rice, veggie stock, red onion, would number at least 20 meals with frozen veg. dry or canned beans and chicken or fish from the freezer [the only meats I eat at this time.] Most of the seasonings would go a lot further than that and some I cannot eat because I am night shade intolerant.

I agree, many meals can be made from these ingredients. What's sticks out to me is a taco salad, red beans and rice, use coconut milk in a smoothie. I don't use a lot of coconut milk. Since I make my own taco seasoning and cheaper to do so. I would use it to flavor lentils and rye berries for a taco. Most that were listed are shelf stable ingredients. I would use left over lime, guac, cilantro mixed to a dip along with red onion. The meals go on and on. Nothing would go to waste here since I usually cook with all the ingredients. Batch cooking with the left over perishable foods would be at the top of my list. So instead of cooking 2 meals I would triple it. There you go, the price just got cheaper. I was just thinking the tofu, if the average size, for me would make 4-6 meals.

I can stretch a block of tofu to 3-4 meals in a stir try. How do you get it to 6? (And, when I'm eating a baked tofu fillet for dinner, usually when the College Phenom is home and I'm making meat for her, I only get 2 servings out of a block of tofu for me!)

Soups, bean and rice bowls, I eat meat so there are many ways to use up those ingredients. So, side note here, I have well educated, seemingly able to critically think professionals that repeat these untrue facts to me about their boxed food services. When I challenge them to elaborate on these claims. Iit generally boils down to the issue is they simply like to have the convenience and apparent fun of having these boxes delivered. I might call it self inflicted Financial injury. They call it all the things the advertisement calls it. I did the same thing you did and there is no way to help my smart friends when truth is not wanted. I have never bought a box food service plan and probably never will. Also, the amount of waste with plastic and cardboard use is a turn off to me.

I bet they are shopping at Whole Foods. Just kidding! Also, you need to consider that the groceries they provide aren’t full sizes. That means if you need beans you aren’t going to get a 1 pound bag or you won’t get a can of coconut milk. You’ll get enough for a recipe. I’ve tried them before back when their free trial was actually free. It’s not anymore. I’ve compared them to grocery stores and they are a lot more expensive. They are just saving you the difficult (not) job of measuring ingredients. I don’t think I’d waste any of those ingredients. Plus why do they think it’s okay to waste money instead?

I haven’t even gotten halfway through this video I don’t think maybe a little bit more, and when you pulled up the Walmart prices, another thing to mention is when HelloFresh gives you items, they give you very little of each spice very little of each portion of jasmine rice, and things like that the items that you’re putting in your cart will filter out more meals than just the four meals across the board. As far as the chips go. It’s barely a handful per person. I will say maybe you got a call hello fresh out on their bullshit and their lies because that’s considered false advertisement, and they should get in trouble for that. 8:58

I feel pretty confident HelloFresh already knows what it is doing. My intent in making the video was to provide a counternarrative for folks who may be considering their service, given the company's claims and the many, many endorsers the company has here on KZread (including endorsements from some of the creators/channels I watch regularly.)

To be fair, the videos I've watched where people were buying small amounts, it was because they were trying to stick to a certain dollar amount. Eating for $5 /day, for instance. You would not want to buy something like that $4 jar of turmeric if you only had a little money to spend.

@@pensgirl10 I wouldn’t use turmeric anyway because I think it reacts with my medication. To suggest that Hello Fresh caters to lower income people since it only provides a tablespoon of spice is ridiculous in my opinion. No offense intended.

@@pensgirl10 I am sorry. I didn’t qualify that my post was addressing Hello Fresh. It is just that in videos I have seen where people are unboxing and cooking their Hello Fresh meals, they are provided with reduced sizes of product. I teaspoon of this spice, one tablespoon of that spice. One cup of rice. All in individual packaging. In real life or on KZread I have never seen anyone purchase, a tablespoon of something. or a cup of something. Only where I live would a store like sprouts offer the ability to purchase smaller amounts of items, but like a tbsp if cilantro might not register on the scale. Since you were responding to my post I assumed you were talking about Hello Fresh also. I will try and be more specific in my future comments. My apologies once again.

I agree that for a vegan, Hello Fresh is probably not a great option. I think when you look ay meat prices, that’s when people MIGHT save money. Maybe you could do the math on that. Also, I think the fact that there is no thinking that has to be done for meal planning has got to be worth something. Lol. 😂 I occasionally get Hello Fresh and will say that 99% of the time, there is way more food than 2 people can eat. I’ve fed 3 adults with leftovers from a 2 serving chicken and mushroom risotto meal.

I don't know if you have a Kroger near you, but, if you do, you might look near the deli section for prepared meals. Mine sometimes has boxes or bags of a whole set of dinner ingredients for 4 people, usually priced around $10. At my store, you can get them in a pick-up order (or delivery), and it might save you some money at a time when you need more prepared food than scratch cooking, given what life is throwing at you.

A lot of the seasonings you would only get the amount to make the meal. Forget about figuring what to do with the leftover items. They are not going to stock your pantry. If I bought these items, I could make a taco soup with what I have on hand. I am trying to eat myself out of house and home. Paying for these meals, would mean I would waste food I already got at a great price. It does not make any sense to me.

As someone who regularly spends $50 a week at Walmart (and not just on food! Stuff like cleaning supplies too!), whenever I hear an influencer say that “cheaper than groceries” line I can’t help but roll my eyes. If you have the money, it doesn’t seem like a bad way to learn how to cook certain things, but Hello Fresh is not cheap.
