Yeah, I agree. Almost all the people I've met here are good people. Quarantine ain't bad... there are definitely worse places to be stuck in quarantine 😂.

How are you a native?

Born and raised on Guam, moved away in 2008. When I was growing up, we could leave our doors unlocked at home and no one would bother. As a teen and young adult, I would leave my car running when heading in to Chode or Payless to grab something. We would throw parties on the beach and feed tourists who would pass by and look in, curious. I hope that locals are still that welcoming. I should note I was there from 1980-2008

People are still very welcoming. I'm not sure if people are quite as trusting as they were in the times you described, but there is still a greater level of trust than in most cities I've been in in the states. What is "Chode"? I've never heard of that.

I was born and raised in Guam in 1964 moved to Hawaii in 1976 after Super Typhoon Pamela.I still have family back and they say Guam is a safe place to live!

As a native Chamorro who was born and raised on Guam, your spot on! I’ve experienced crime myself as a native. Crime does not differentiate between natives and non natives. Your comment on what happens when one steals a car was funny 😄. My crime experience was my vehicle (truck) was stolen. Fortunately it was found by GPD two days later missing the tailgate. I believe what happens is the thieves steal vehicles to remove and sale the parts. Anyways, great informative videos! Thanks

@@tayloredstory8241 i like the weather here because when its hot, its just dry heat but Guam's weather when its hot sucks because you just be sweating and now your clothes are sweaty 😭also, when i firet got here, i was super cold but now its getting hotter as summer approaches

My parents were military, so I lived in many places including Guam. Guam is the safest place I have lived. I never heard a single gunshot in Guam, while there have been multiple gun fights right in front of my house in Virginia. Also, the city I lived in, in Florida, had insane crime. People were setting houses on fire in my neighborhood, I learned to sleep to the sounds of screaming, and gunshots every night. The neighborhood gangs there settled there beefs by going to eachothers neighborhood and killing random people. The scariest things about Guam are the nature, the earthquakes, and the cliffs.

I visited Guam several times and the only bad experience I had was seeing some young U.S. military guys walking behind some young Japanese girls and making rude comments to them. The locals and the tourists seemed like the nicest group of people I have ever met.

Born and raised in Guam. Left in 2012 & went back to visit in 2016. I will admit, growing up we slept with windows open and doors open. Left cars on and unlocked while we ran into stores. When I went back in 2016, it wasn’t quite the same. I still love my home, but I will say I know since leaving, meth has hit the island hard 😭. It’s so small. My 20 years of living in Guam Ive never had my car broken into. My 8 years in the states, my car has been rummaged through quite a few times even in the “safe” neighborhoods & a home of our/ was broken into and everything small enough and valuable was taken.

Great information. In my short time there, the only thing out of the norm that I saw were several abandoned cars that had either been stolen and burned or up on blocks without wheels. Saw all on one trip and none on the others. But yeah, I wondered the same thing about stealing cars on Guam. Why? Where are you going to take it?

I heard the villages were unable to ticket people for abandoned cars for a while due to lack of citation training. I think the problem was fixed a few months back, but there are still some cars laying around.

When cars are stolen here they are usually driven to a relatively isolated area, stripped and abandoned rather quickly. The parts get sold. Please note I am not a car thief but I have seen the end result. My car was actually targeted once, thankfully I knew what was going on and avoided it.

Where do you recommend for a rental car for a few months on travel assignments? How much did it cost?

I’ve been a local resident on Guam for 6 years and thankfully I haven’t experienced any crimes 🙏🏻 Could be because I’m overly cautious and mostly an indoorsy person. I do feel safe here, but I’d always be careful whenever I’m around “sketchy” villages (where an acquaintance of mine was driving through Harmon and a group of men gathered around their car, rocked it, and broke off their side mirror). I’m in the Tamuning area and my husband doesn’t even let me go out running alone, so he does follow me and we bring our pocket knife/pepper spray just in case hahaha.

Can anyone give me an accurate picture of how bad crime is in Dededo? Looking at getting a place on the southern side of Dededo, closer to the airport.

I lived in Guam for 4 years,, it is pretty safe I lived at the top of Guam so I was safe from tsunami's. I am 8 years old so I was like 3 years old when we got there.

My dad lived in Guam back in the 80s so many good stories from living in a little remote village. Used to have to walk through a jungle to get to the bus stop to go to school but the neighbors came up to him his first day and gave him a BB gun with a magnet on it. He said why do I need a freaking BB gun. Locals said you gotta watch out for jungle dogs on the way to the bus stop. When you get to the school bus put the gun in the side trunk cabinets. It’ll be there when you get out for the walk back home. My dad was like what the feez jungle dogs?!?’ 😂🤣🤣😂 he came across a couple of em only had to use the BB gun once but what the feez lol 😂 But I definitely want to go to Guam 🇬🇺 at least once in my life. See where my pops lived. I am half Chamorro ❤️

Love Saipan, its lifestyle is much more friendlier bc Guam has become westernized & easy to get busy with life & forget to have fun at times just making a living ... Typhoons are like a blessing in disguise bc we are all together as a family to be in good shelter to be close again, unable to go outside with these strong winds and downpour of rain ..🌴⛈🌧🌊🌀🌴

Our family lived there from Jan 1970 to Jun 1972. Back then, stateside kids got bullied but hey, we were the new kids. We didn't feel unsafe at all, but the Police did tend to treat statesiders more harshly than the locals when it came to traffic violations. My dad got a speeding ticket at 12am in front of the Wettengel elementary school in Dededo for doing 20mph in a 10mph school zone, even though the 10mph was during school hours.

My dad’s car got stolen. His friend told him he thought he saw his car at a junkyard. My dad went there and the guy was still there. He just painted a black stripe on the hood. Stolen cars probably end up in a junkyard as parts.

Sorry to hear about your dad’s car. Scrapping them out for parts would make sense. I wonder what percentage of the thieves end up getting caught.

I have a twin brother named ishmael who lives in Guam 19 years old and I dont know what happened to him but something has completely changed him guam did not do right by my brother

I've been on Guam since 1985...36 years later...our car plus 5 or 6 others got windows bashed in and insides rifled thru 24 or 25 August 2021...they caught the guy 22 Sept 2021 at the old Trick Shots...his pic should be in the news police blotter...and I saw it on the Yigo Neighborhood Watch FB group...Guam is relatively safe and most people here are really friendly

Guam has been pretty cool, been here for a year and a half

Guam native here. I am curious about one thing. Do you believe that you would need a firearm to protect yourself back home in Columbus? I ask this question because I have heard that people are buying guns like crazy in the states for self defense. I have lived most of my life in the southern villages and in the central area and I have never felt the need to purchase a firearm to defend myself because I feel safe where I live. Yes, people have stolen stuff from the outside of my house in the middle of the night when I was asleep, but for the most part, that is all the crime that I have ever experienced here. My family has installed a camera system around the outside of the house and we have not been robbed ever since it has been installed. In addition, we have dogs that alert us if there are any strangers approaching our house. At most, I feel like the only weapon that I would need to protect my family is a machete to scare away stray animals that would wander near my house and to kill any snakes that are hiding around the garage. So in addition to the question that I have asked you, I would appreciate it if any other Guam natives would like to share their own experiences with crime here.

Yes. I live in Columbus Ohio. Crime rates have increased since 2020. My son lives in Guam now. I cant wait to visit.

Hi, Lily! In our experience, there is a real need for health care providers (especially nurse practioners) on the island. I'm not as familiar with the military side of things, but I know there are several local clinics looking for NPs. If you want, I can connect you with my wife. She knows a lot more about the job market than I do. She can probably even connect you with some offices looking for nurses if you are open to working locally. Let me know.

I’m Chamorro raised in the states but go back every other year to visit family due to expensive flights. Your right about how they think it’s in South America lol.

A bunch of drivers are not insured nor do they have a valid license hence the hit and run.

They bust your windows in Honolulu. People don’t care if it’s lock, here. Coming from someone that grew up there, I think the people of Guam are more community based oriented. You have more people (family, family-friends, neighbors) that look out for you. I don’t have that same feeling of security here in the Big Pineapple.

Thanks for that perspective. I've heard Honolulu can be a bit rough with crime. Guam is a lot more community oriented than anywhere I've lived. That is one of the things I really like about living here.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a more quite rural location, look at the south of the island. If you want to be close to the stores, malls, theaters, and other entertainment, the northern part (Dededo, Tamuning, etc) will suit you better.

Before ppl pretty much used to leave their doors unlocked and windows opened, obviously that was all before the late 90’s. After that I’ve pretty much experienced the same you have. Had my car window shattered once but I left my speakers in the car in a neighborhood I knew had sketchy ppl and drunks walking the streets. Dumb move by me. It’s so easy on Guam to know your neighbors and who to watch out for. Talk to ppl, you’d be surprise how connected we all are.

Great video and funny too! Some places on Guam are safer than others just like any other location. Use common sense and you’ll be fine. Locals are super welcoming and accommodating. You get what you put out.

I'd say walking outside is safe but less so if you're female. Just practice common sense and you should be fineeeeee. A friend in Michigan once told me, and it was so funny- but she said, "My sister said you're a closet millionaire because drugs are huge on Guam. So you're either on it or selling it." I couldn't hold a straight face 🤣🤣🤣

My theory is that people steal the car at night and they sell it to a car broker and ship it to overseas (e.g., The Philippines, Indonesia).

👍🌈😊 You're right, living on Guam is like living anywhere else... you just have to use "common sense" and not do stupid stuff. One thing though, be kind and know your neighbors so they will reciprocate the same. Down here in the south... or neighbors and our dogs are our village police 🚔. I lived in Guam from 2016 to 2019, What happens to stolen cars is, They are not driven around. They are stolen for parts to be sold, They take the stolen car to a secluded area and strip it down, I have seen a lot of stripped cars along dirt roads while I was there. Another thing is, if your car breaks down on a back road, never leave it, it would be like leaving it in New York City, it will be stripped in minutes. They take everything under the hood, and dashboard. My wife to be is a native to Guam and her family has told me about that. they do a thing called, Masse, which means they strip a car, and then sell the parts to a junk yard for a few dollars for the metal. Unlike here in the states, they get very little for the parts. like an engine, they would only get $20 for it in Guam, but it is still money

As a former local of Guahan. I can say it is safer as far as crime rate. That being said, I feel like the only reason it’s safer is solely based on population. I currently live in SoCal and I see crime almost every other week. But, it’s also 10x the population rate compared to Guam. And that’s just the southern part of California.

Here's my thing though (and just to clarify, I'm well traveled and know Guam is pretty safe): Comparing Guam's rates to the entire continental United State's rates doesn't really make for reliable metrics. The murder rate in Detroit is quite different from the murder rate in Salt Lake City. I think it might've been better to compare it to a specific place, like New York City (which, as a person from the NYC area, I'm always a bit amused at people being so surprised that the crime rate around here has plummeted since the early 90s and it's the safest big city in the country). Or maybe something with a closer population density to Guam would've been even better.

Same federal bracket taxes as in the states, same FICA as in the states, 5% Gross receipt tax ( if you have a business, that comes out of your total monthly sales) , comparable to the sales tax. There is also a Guam income tax , but need to search for the exact %. Overall, I believe that you're in for tax savings if coming out of Cali.

Guan criminal can end up in the federal prison system. Two inmates from Guam murdered a Correctional Officer in Federal Prison in California. They both had serious criminal records.

@@tayloredstory8241 Los Angeles, California. I was robbed by three people at a gas station and it was a traumatic experience. I’m sure the suburbs are a lot safer.

I will certainly feel safer living there than Chicago where killings are nonstop day and night.

New to Guam as a travel nurse. Such a beautiful place. I feel safe and honestly there’s good and bad people everywhere! So thankful to have been welcomed by so many local Chamorro people.

Only place in the world I know where they call you "Pal" before they kick your ass! Followed by the CHamoru battle cry "HAAA!which was stolen by Little John! Lol

It's not safe in terms of healthcare. Guam is the only state/territory in the nation that doesn't hold negligent doctors/hospitals accountable. No repercussions = indifference/apathy. Basically they don't care if they negligent injure you because they can get away from it Many of the locals love Guam, it's our home but many of us leave because of poor healthcare. The reason is the laws that prevent patients from getting justice.

I've heard about some of the arbitration issues. In the news lately, there's been a lot of debate about some legislation surrounding arbitration rights. I don't know all the details but I've heard the a lot of doctors are opposing it.

Let's see... you've had "multiple cell phones stolen from your car," and "you've hit people before" (plural?) and they "let you off..." and ...??? I think I see a pattern developing. 🤔 jk...🤣 In affirmation of your safety assessment of Guam - If Guam was really as some Karens describe it as being "unsafe," then I'm thinking we would have a whole lot more cemetaries than we currently do. Good job!

Native here. Concerning aggravated assault cases: The majority of those tend to come from people hanging out, drinking too much, and taking things too far. You don’t need to be concerned about random people picking a fight. As far as sexual assault cases: Sadly, unless you’re a Japanese tourist or a local from a broken home, you don’t need to be worried about getting assaulted in a back alley. The vast majority of sexual assault cases come from home environments. Petty crimes such as theft: Those tend to happen in the more populated areas in or around downtown and even at that, only in certain areas. I lived in Ordot most of my life (I’m 36 btw) and had one attempted break in. Had my tire stolen when I lived in an apartment in Tamuning. Other than that, nothing much. All in all, Guam is just like most other places. For the most part, people here are really chill and just minding their own business. Just get to know your next door neighbors and minimize time at the bars and you should be able to live here more or less without incident. Btw, nice video. Informative and accurate. Keep up the respectful attitude and you’ll be invited to a family bbq in no time lol!

I don't think I would be worried about homeless people in Guam I'm in Portland so if you tripped on the sidewalk you'll probably get a needle strike or fall in human waste sorry just kidding not quite that bad here in Portland I would imagine that there wouldn't be as much problems for drugs I would have to sing

The biggest crime in Guam is to get away with medical negligence unlike anywhere in the US. Imagine if someone hit you with a car and Injured you, they'd be held accountable compared to a doctor that cut the wrong leg, he can get away with it because forced arbitration makes it impossible for people to get justice in the court. It's so unjust that if malpractice happened in the military base naval hospital they can be taken to court, but not a local hospital like grmc and GMH (you're basically screwed) it's a horror house horror hospital. Guam's only gov hospital GMH is known as Guam Murder Hospital. Meanwhile the relatively new GRMC lacks real US board certified physicians/inexperienced nurses Help our people fight for this injustice on July 12, 2020 4:30pm at the Guam Legislature.

You're right. Be smart wherever you go. I was once robbed at knife-point in Istanbul and I almost hate telling the story, because it gives people the impression that it's dangerous there. It totally is not. It's as safe as the other big European cities. I went to the wrong side of town and as a black man, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I was wandering around, because it was Ramadan when I was there and so much of the city was closed down pretty early. Dumb move. Istanbul is safe, so check it out, guys!
