Is FLAVORED Whiskey Actually Bad? (or are we just too afraid to admit the deliciousness...)

All MB's know that RULE #1 in the Whiskey Tribe is - The BEST whisk(e)y is the whisk(e)y you like to drink - the way you like to drink it. But FLAVORED WHISKEY never seems to get any love in whisky circles. Is that reputation deserved? Or have we been missing out on something tasty because we're too worried about what our fancy friends might think?

    10:45 Honey can have notes. Bees were stealing ingredients from a licorice factory in my hometown, and their honey tasted like licorice. You might find that the bees responsible for the Yukon Jack are also responsible for pollinating a citrus orchard.

    Get this.... I worked for almost 10 years for a craft brewery. The master brewer always buys local honey at our Farmers' Market because it helps build his immunity to local pollens and their allergens. That makes perfect sense.

    How to Drink has a awesome single serve eggnog recipe. 2 oz bourbon, .5 oz simple syrup, .5 luxardo maraschino, and a whole raw egg. Dry shake to emulsify then shake with ice. Pour in glass, and mix in 3 oz whole milk. Top with nutmeg. I love replacing the spirit with a great jamacian rum and ditching maraschino for a coconut rum.

    Exactly, I don’t think anyone drinks it neat. It’s a liqueur. Drambuie is no more a flavored whiskey than Grand Marnier is a flavored Cognac. I love Rusty Nails almost as much as an Old Fashioned. I make them 2oz blended scotch like Chevas Regal 3/4 to 1 oz Drambuie stir on the rocks and float 1/2 oz Ardbeg 10 or Uigeadail on top. Then an optional second float or Angostura Bitters. Heavenly!

  • @oivind22

    @oivind22

    Yes, that's what I keep a bottle of Drambuie for. I use a ratio of 3:1 or 4:1, whisky to Drambuie. I have only tried it with Johnnie Walker Black, but my idea was to use it for whiskies I don't finish because they're too boring (I'll try with Laphroaig sometime, though). Throw in some Drambuie and ice, and you have a nice dessert. Excellent after a heavy meal.

    Hey, I love southern comfort -- it's simple and tastes nice -- and egg nog (especially the Southern Comfort brand)! All-time favorite whiskeys have to be Lagavulin Distillers Edition and some special edition Macallan we found in an office where I used to work. Those are delicious and both experiences best had when I am in a very thoughtful mood. Southern comfort, for me, is just... nice, simple, and comforting.

    ive seen a couple schools of thought on the mint julep - some say its best with you brush the mint around the tin prior to adding whiskey/sugar/ice, and some say all you need is the aromatics from the mint bouquet garnish. there are those who muddle mint in the bottom, but that seems to be a biiiig nono with bartenders

Always woke up the next day feeling better after having a great nights sleep. Also try a Snakebite, it's a shot of Yukon Jack with some Roses lime juice floated on top.
