Hi Scott, I'm going to tell you something funny and painful at the same time. I closed my account in a bank here in Spain because I started to feel they did some unfair things. After a couple of years as a client in another bank, it was acquired by the first one. Then, I moved my account to another bank. One year later, the same story, this bank was acquired for the first one. With Adobe, it happens exactly the same. I'd been for years running away from them, and always, always, they became buying my preferred tools and destroying them. Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and now Figma.
@bosnianlain
Жыл бұрын
Ofc this happens, but its a different story when it involves open source projects, i dont really know how open penpot actually is, but in general, open source projects cannot "die", because everyone can replicate them (in a totally legal way), because the code is open to look and replicate, thats why you will never have to worry about microsoft buying linux for example.

Adobe sucks! Full disclosure; I grew up with Adobe software, they did amazing things, right up until they forced my hand by demanding that I rent their software for a monthly subscription. I turned my back on them when I started freelancing and vowed never to subscribe to their dark arts. Now that they have acquired Figma, I fear that the best features of Figma will be locked behind an extortionate monthly subscription. A dark day for design. 😢 I'm going to try Penpot tonight!

If enough people had signed up to pay for Figma licenses they wouldn't have had to sell their product to Adobe... Honestly as a professional if someone can't afford to pay $12 per month for a tool that will help them make thousands per month then they might want to think about a different profession. Many other professions have way more expensive monthly overheads. For example an average Uber driver spends about $200 on fuel per month... Considering that, $50 per month for a Creative Cloud licence isn't actually that bad.

I'm definitely moving to PenPot too. Going to give it a try. Perhaps even contribute to some of the development as well. I became a CS student for exactly this reason... to know how to make the programs that are costing me an arm and a leg just to have access to them... Because I know how companies mistreat open source devs as well as their software. But individuals who have a passion for design are left with having to pay insane amounts to express their passion in a digital form

Totally Loved it!!! Created an account ASAP!! I share exactly the same feeling you have with Adobe and with this acquisition. I wanted to look for an alternative and this video came in just in time.
I've been using PenPot (self-hosted) for a while now, and truly enjoy using it. But even I have been doing the bulk of my design work with Figma simply because "everyone else is using it." I'm looking forward to Penpot's gaining popularity, though, as I do believe the more people make the switch, the better it will be. Its biggest hurdle in gaining acceptance will be in the migration of existing projects from closed-format Figma to open-format PenPot files, though. Looking forward to seeing what a larger community can do for it!
Thank you for covering this! Penpot looks great. After you get familiar with it please make a tutorial.
"I'm not in the business of giving Adobe any money" My man 💪 what a god awful company is that.
This looks GREAT! Like many here, I switched away from Adobe products. I now use Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher. I've never looked back, either. Each of them are only currently $56 USD and they upgrade for free. Also run half price sales frequently. Much more intuitive interface as well as much better functionality. I bought Macromedia Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and Flash before Adobe acquired them, too. Still going strong!! Time for Adobe to realize that even the "mighty" can be brought down. Anyone remember when WordPerfect was king???
is there going to be a way to copy and paste images from say pexels and paste it directly into the artboard? That was one of my favourite aspects of figma.
Alright, gonna go all in on Affinity Designer from today!
Hey, another one substitute may worth to take a look is Lunacy. Interface quite closer to Figma, and some more features than Pinpot Still didn't decide which one is better
I don’t know why Adobe is so much money angry. They are run it like mafias. I am from a developing country and you know sometimes you barely make money, paying for these services is pain. Figma had give me freedom and love. I hope penpot will help.
There’s also Lunacy which is also free and runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Potential upside as an AEM dev is a future headless + react + figma implementation, but even then - lukewarm at best on today's news. Just love Figma so much, but thanks for the alternative!
I remember when Adobe bought Soundforge, an audio editing application that was in many ways superior to Audacity. Before Adobe acquired them, I had purchased it because it was so good I thought it was worth it to have the full version. At the time I paid about 50 as I recall. After Adobe acquired it they exploded the price to about 300 (going off my recall, I think that's about right -- just know it was ridiculously expensive) dollars. That's when my hate boner for Adobe started. I welcome Penpot to the opensource community!

I would like to see it `plasmic app` will do some integration for Penpot. I need to find more about this news as I have moved from Adobe a few years ago to Affinity. I have used Figma time to time to collaborate with designers and figure out if I will be able to use several templates I have bought in past for Branding docs or if my money went out of chimney. Hmm....
Penpot Tutorial? Count me in!
Had a look on penpot a week ago (before figma) and found it cool but saw, that they won prices 3 years ago already. Seemed not to be fast progress - without components an design libraries it makes no sense to switch (from Sketch). But I will keep an eye on it.
Holly sh... . You already made a video about a blog that I just read out just now.
Nice find!!! 🤩
I use(d) Figma almost daily for the past years - same reaction like you XD - the only real features I miss in Penpot are the quick (&dirty) image editing magic moves I got addicted to in figma, as they are so efficient for the daily grind. PS only for final production, but now I hope Penpot catching up soon
Don't forget to zoom the UI when making videos. It's hard to see anything.
I think they have auto layout and variants/states on their road map.
Figma integration of import/export would make it a no-brainer to switch since a lot of my works are mostly on Figma
I just start learning Figma recently and avoid Adobe for so long because Adobe monthly subscription cost in my country in extremely expensive. I'm afraid I have to say goodbye to Figma.
I was paying attention to the news on Twitter... your Twitter. :D
Thank you for this intro on Penpot! I will also be moving away from Figma considering what Adobe did with Fireworks after its acquisition in 2005. Fireworks was a big threat to Adobe's Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver products combined and Adobe promised not to kill it but ultimately did so just a few short years later. They even stopped development of the product just within the first 2 years.

@@poppingjaz I stand corrected but my comment still stands. Fireworks was a lot more popular amongst web devs and independent web designers than Adobe's own tools. Many who used open-source coding tools preferred Fireworks.

Why not Sketch? I'm in no way implying that Penpot isn't worthy, just wondering your thoughts on Sketch.

As a person/student living with parents and having 0 money for paying for stuff on the internet, I hope this open-sourced tool will help. I’ve been making school posters and learning materials on Figma and boy, I hated when big greedy corporations decide to buy them and make them unavailable for everyone. Ugh, it’s annoying, despite many reasons for the acquisition.
There's another FOSS design tool, similar to this. Quant-UX

Penpot should make Figma plugins compatible with Penpot
Sad is that there are no community people anymore who can come up with any free open source complex desktop application.
so only sketch vs adobe???
I looked into the app it seems like the people who made it put some thought into it. They give you a tutorial section that is easy to access. I need auto layout and components and even padding sight. Figma was becoming soooo good! How sad. Guess I'll have to wait a few months to make the switch.

LOL, Anti-Trust in America is dead. Politicians only use it now to lean on companies for campaign contributions. Has Anti-Trust protected us from Google, Facebook, or Twitter overreaches? America is now an oligarchy with a façade of democracy hiding that fact. Bill Gates and China are even buying up all the US farmland. What is Anti-Trust doing about that? That is even a more concerning issue when you let an adversary buy up large swaths of farmland needed to feed your own people, but politicians love the campaign money it brings in. And with "dark money" legal now, China or Russia can donate to US politician's campaigns.
This is too bad, sorry to hear Figma has been consumed by the dark side... :( Kind of sucks i have a tool that would allow you to draw my pages in Figma and then convert it onto React, and then Svelte... Would be interested if there is an export model like Figma has.
