Not quite. You aren't taking into account the special brand of tax evasion that comes with owning your own business. If they used the Safety Third money to pay out a salary to each of them, it would be worth a lot less than if they directly use the money for "business expenses." Damn, that's actually got me wondering about company pizza parties now. Everyone says that pizza parties are what shitty businesses do rather than paying people's salaries, but with income tax as high as it is that might actually be a legitimate favor.

Additionally; he already had a ten percent stake in Twitter. And on top of that, if every user on twitter paid 8 dollars a month for a checkmark, he'd make 3 billion dollars a month. If a third of those people paid, it would undoubtedly cover his interest. I don't know how many times this has to be said, he didn't buy twitter to make money, he's already making 60 billion dollars a year; He's buying twitter to send a message: "The free marketplace of ideas will not be corrupted by censorship."

I have a habit of never telling anyone I am going to do something until I've either already done it, or am locked in to doing it. I didn't tell anyone I was taking the MCAT until I was signed up and paid for my test. I didn't tell anyone I was climbing Mt Rainier until I'd booked the guide and spent months training. The only exception is I've always told people I wanted to be a doctor. And I've failed so aggressively over the years but never stopped trying and am just on the cusp of finally succeeding. But it's taken me over fifteen years to get to med school. I honestly don't know what I would have done if a close friend just told me to stop trying, that I wasn't cut out for it, because the barriers I had were personal and irrelevant to my capability in succeeding. It means so much to me, but to hear that, it might have really pushed me over the edge in a bad way. So I'd caution anyone against just telling someone that they're not cut out for something unless you know a -lot- about them. Because it could have dangerous consequences.

If it takes you 15 years to get into med school, there's a problem. Having 1 or 2 years in between college and med school is normal because schools only have a certain amount of spots, so it might take a couple of tries. 15 means there's something that schools don't like about you, and you haven't been able to recognize or change it. You're not cut out to be a doctor

@@priscillajusto-repp8152 First of all, they're not in med school, they're "on the cusp." If there were any issues in their education, these could've been solved in 15 years. I would not trust my doctor if it took them 15 years to get into med school unless they were doing an operation that I myself would be able to do. It takes a lot of hard work to be a doctor, and many people simply aren't capable. That's fine, and these people passionate about medicine can find other jobs which don't require graduate school and residency and which don't need people who are highly capable

So I'm not concerned at all about someone taking 15 years to finish med-school (in my country it takes 10 years btw including your specialization), I'm more concerned about those getting a degree in their early or mid 20s when they aren't fully grown individuals.

@@tribouletman The average worker produces more for society than Elon Musk ever will. That's because without actually putting in the work, nothing of value is created. Elon isn't smart and does not contribute meaningfully to society. He simply has lots of wealth buying and selling companies kickstarted by his exploitative father. He uses that wealth to hire actually smart people such as engineers to come up with meaningful contributions to society, and factory workers actually produce the product. Eliminate Musk from the equation, and you have a ton of smart engineers and a ton of hardworking laborers. So let's ask ourselves: do we really want to live in a society where meaningful contributions only occur at the whims of the relatively few with inherited wealth or who simply happened to be lucky? Or should we have an economic system where those smart engineers and hardworking laborers are the ones able to make those decisions for the betterment of society?

Nudity and pornography are allowed on Twitter though, so the answer is that you wouldn't get banned at all. Now Facebook, Instagram, KZread, Tumblr and others - that's a different story. Twitter Blue existed before Elon came along - it cost $5 and it enabled you to upload 1080p videos up to 10 minutes long (default is 720p 2:20 long). I wanted to buy it to post my nsfw animations but the feature was only available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Now after the changes Twitter blue costs $8, is available in one more country than before - UK and cannot be purchased on the Desktop or Android anymore - now you are REQUIRED to own an iPhone to buy Twitter Blue - it's literally the only way. So I'm still not able to buy it because I live in the wrong country and use the wrong kind of phone. Not that I would want to buy it now cause it's so badly looked upon by the art community. Oh and that deboosting based on having/not having a paid checkmark is not a thing yet - he said it would but it hasn't been implemented and I hope it never will.

Very wise words on feedback/constructive criticism, William! I worked a long time in the media as CG Artist, and it was absolutely critical for employment prospects to expose ourselves to the harshest criticism we could get. "Be brutal" being a common term, but by itself is not enough.. most people were a bit of a let-down in this regard. I found that it helps to make pacts with others doing the same, to be as brutal as possible, but you really have to drive the point home to get anywhere. Sounds like you're on the right track with the feedback from your missus too though. First impressions reported properly are often surprising, disappointing, and useful.

Holy shit, the 'It's nice to just give up'-thing made me laugh so hard. It's a good piece of advice regardless of how shit people feel after getting the kind of advice.

I think some of the things Elon was offering, like seeing less ads, would be good ideas (blue checkmark very much excluded). I don't think it's worth 8 dollars, and I don't think I would pay for it no matter the price, but I'm fairly sure there are people who would. Giving priority to the replies from the people who paid kinda sounds like shadow-banning the people who didn't, but it could be done closer to the promoted tweets that are already there. I would also be fine to give people a badge showing they support Twitter if that's something people want. However, using the verified account checkmark for this is entirely dumb. Even if some people see it like one, checkmarks are not a status symbol. They are a tool to prove you are who you claim to be. It would be great if you could verify everyone, but it's simply not feasible (or at least not economically viable). This means that old verifications were "broken" in one way: someone might be who they claim to be, but they have not been verified. This is a problem, but a relatively small one as there are other ways to verify that if you really want to. You can also have a good instinct on who might not be verified. If the USA president is not verified, it's probably a fake account. However, you wouldn't expect a youtuber with 1k subs to be verified. The problem with Twitter blue is not only that it doesn't fix that issue, but it actually makes it worse. Any real account might be unverified because that person might not want to pay, meaning that not having a checkmark means nothing. Even worse, anyone with a checkmark might be fake, because there is no actual verification. And, on top of that, if enough people buy it, it stops being something special and something people want. If not enough people buy it, it won't make enough of a difference to change anything (and it will probably still be pointless because you can just buy it, it won't be a status symbol anymore). With this, I can't understand how Elon thought it was a good idea. My theory is that he is so full of himself that he just couldn't consider he was wrong, despite half of the internet telling him it was a terrible idea. The any other options I can think of are that he is too dumb to understand or that he just likes to see chaos unfold, but I don't think those are the case. I think he genuinly belived that it would work out, because they could just ban trolls who abused this and they would eventually stop paying again. And, to be fair, with enough time trolls would probably get tired of this and it would go down to manageable levels. However, he clearly underestimated the amount of people willing to pay $8 for a quick laugh. What I think will be a bigger problem, especially long term, will be scam accounts. Scammers are already used to pretending to be someone else, and they will probably manage to set up something to pass whatever verification process Twitter sets up (it can't be that thorough if you want to allow potentially millions of users to get it for $8). Sure, you can ban them as soon as you find them out, but they only need one scam to succed to finance dozens of fake accounts, so I don't think that's going to stop them. And surely it will be a lot easier to scam someone when you are a "verified" account than when sending a random email. Sorry for the long rant, I have been thinking about this for a while.

Allen telling that guy to give up after 6 months has some fight club vibes. like "he wants to make metal music and i took his license and told him that if he didnt have a metal song out in 6 months i would kill him." his cereal will taste better than it ever has in his life.

One of the funniest things to me about Twitter Blue is one of the advertised features is half as many ads, like you're still getting ads, Elon just wants to make sure their ads are still worth it to buy, can't just completely cut off a set of people from advertisers.

With the Twitter blue, you also get half ads. Reportedly the average user generated $12 a month from ads, meaning Twitter is actually only netting $2/month. Additionally, Elon gave billions of the debt to Twitter, so Twitter needs to make expensive interest payments as well now.

Elon is going bankrupt. He’s not going to be able to pay any of the loan back and he’s burning bridges with all the politicians that were able to save Tesla through climate bills. He’s going to lose out on a big share of his Tesla since he put it as collateral and Tesla is going to start losing massive amounts of money. Who knows, SpaceX is also completely dependent on government funding and might lose out on new launches.
