    Thanks for the review. I agree that the train is old and dirty and needs a refresh and a new coat of paint, including new carpet. This price is good and cannot be complained about. Thanks about showing the WC for each train. This is where you will really find out how well the a train is kept and maintained.

    As a local, The general condition of these locos are nothing to surprise actually, they are more than 50 years old 😅, but it's getting renewed with new rolling stock from talgo, and a new operating company for the sleeping train services, so it may get better to be worth this price, great review mate, hope you had a delightful trip

    Cool video and loved the background music. I've never been on an Egyptian train ,but back in 1983, travelled from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya on the then ' Lunatic Express.' It also was an overnight sleeper train, taking 13 hours or so starting at an elevation of roughly 5000ft dropping to sea level. The carriages dated from the 1950s and in order to prevent the partition, between cabins from swinging open, during the trip, you had to secure the bolt lock with blue tack!!! Breakfast was included and I had the most perfectly cooked and tastiest fried eggs ever! This train however and the old narrow gauge railway has now been superseded by a Chinese built new railway with a 75mph express which now completes the journey in 5 hours. The old line is apparently still there and runs roughly parallel with the new line with the former handling freight only.

    Another enjoyable video. Thanks kindly. As mentioned in my comment on your Cairo-Alex video, I’ve been down a few times to Luxor by train, and by bus. There’s some exquisite scenery along the way. I went when there were no “foreigner ticket prices”. But your hotel in Luxor looked dreadful. There are great places on the West Bank, away from the hubbub. The last time there, a few years ago, I stayed at a Danish run place. I had a large apt with balconies at each end, kitchen, swimming pool below, all for $10 a night. And a pesky man servant unashamedly wanting bakshish every time he saw me. By bus I stopped at Minya and stayed on a boat converted into a small hotel run by Christians, $8 the night with impressive views of the Nile. And further up I was at Asyut, a fundamentalist hive at the time, I had to wait to be escorted by a jeep with armed soldiers. They left me at the YMCA, run by some loonie people. To walk the streets an armed soldier, or policeman, would accompany me. The best train ride, though was from Nouadhibou, Mauritania to Atar in the Sahara. They were empty iron ore box cars. I think we all spent the cold night crying as we inhaled dust. Someone did a relatively recent video of that trip. Memories in my twilight years. Cheers from Nebraska, soon Kathmandu.

    I've been going to Egypt almost every year since the early 2000s so i took this train a couple of times back in like 2005-ish. It was the same exact train and back then it was great as it was in good state, AC was like a fridge, it looked and felt fresh and modern. It's a shame they've not refurbished it or anything, they could have bought some newer ones too since they were pretty popular with tourists and I'm sure they would be just as popular if they were new and thus had a good reputation again.

    Do you feel like the country as a whole has gone downhill since you first started visiting?

  • @entity22

    @entity22

    Жыл бұрын

    @NonstopEurotrip I don't think it went downhill, I think it's complicated cause Egypt is a big country with a lot of people, in a troubled area and having had years of foreign european powers dictating for them, followed by a lot of political torment, instability, power hungry rulers, etc. This almost always leads to generalized, endemic corruption, nepotism and greed that becomes part of the culture at all levels. I am from Romania, in this region we all still deal with the similar effects of centuries or invasions, occupations, greed and then dictatorship, which kept us behind in some ways and resulted in people hungry for freedom, power and money, who didn't really have experience managing themselves, so we ended up with power and money hungry political cliques who don't care about anything else and don't know how to run a cou try effectively cause they got where they are through relations, money and nepotism. Egypt has grown in some ways, middle and upper class people I think evolved overall, there's some extra infrastructure, tourism has expanded further, there's middle class and upper middle class neighborhoods in Cairo that have grown since I was first there for example, things have happened. But, at the same time, they had a very tumultuous period with the revolution that was wasted by the ruling elites, some bombings, covid. The period after the revolution was bad for tourism cause Egypt was considered unsafe, which I don’t think it was so much and I was there even the year of. That dragged them down as opposed to the full on tourist boom they were in before. I guess there is this typical level of not caring and letting things decay, which happened to this train as well, not investing much in replacing and maintaining. Back in like 2010 Egypt Air was also pretty good and then it had a decline again. On the other hand, take Hurghada, now a big town with so many resorts and growing population. When I was there 1st, in 2002, as a teen, it was a quarter of that or less. Those hotels and businesses employ people, even if many probably don't pay them as well as they should, it's still more than many of those people would earn without tourism. Anyway, sorry for the long reply, it's just very complicated to answer to that question, it's not a yes or no situation. It was a dream of mine to go to Egypt cause of the history and interesting culture and I liked it so I kept going back to visit and for the red sea.

    @NonstopEurotrip yeah, I guess in Egypt the hassle and scamming is probably the worst between the middle eastern and north african countries we generically call arabic. They are not unfriendly though, quite the opposite, they're just A LOT and chaotic. The average person there is poor and pretty uneducated(again cause of bad leadership) and their culture is very loud, maybe also cause they have a large population. I always thought the average westerner from western europe or the US likely is more shocked and uncomfortable with this than someone from the balkans, eastern europe or latin america where, by comparison, there is a bit more chaos and loudness. It's actually not as bad now as it was before.

    it depends on your definition's... on a lot of ferries (in Europe or in Japan) you see the cabins start with the "deluxe" level, anything bellow that being sleeper seats etc. in some way, a single sleeper compartment itself is a deluxe service (for a train)... this would be similar to what a "first class" compartment was on a standard Soviet trains! (some "named" trains had much better compartments but it all depended on the rank of line & the exclusiveness of the service you took), on the other hand, in some countries you can really expect a "deluxe" service to be a railway cruise...

    I lived in Egypt for a few years back in the mid to late nineties and took this same journey a few times. I went first class seating rather than the sleeper though. Back then, it was fine and while not Western European standards it was still good, plenty of room with comfy seating that reclined a lot. It appears not a lot has been renewed and it looks very similar. Having said that, Cairo Station looks a lot better now.

    These sleeper trains are actually old, as they were imported from West Germany in the mid-seventies. They were considered a breakthrough at that time , and remained in very good condition until the late nineties. The sad thing is that the railway sector in Egypt in the seventies and eighties was better than now in terms of cleanliness and the modernity of the fleet compared to the other countries at that time. For example, but not limited to, we had the integrated unit, the French turbo train, which was similar to the French TGV express trains, and it covered the distance from Cairo to Alexandria in an hour and 45 minutes . Exactly, even the new Talgo train cannot achieve this speed any way , there are currently active efforts to revive the railway sector in Egypt, in addition to establishing new electrified high-speed railway lines in cooperation with Siemens Mobility. @@NonstopEurotrip Thanks. I'm flying into Hurghada, then travelling by bus to Luxor for a 7 night Nile cruise to Aswan and back to Luxor. I then need to get to Cairo for a few days before my onward flight. I like the idea of the daytime VIP train to get the Nile scenery on the way up.

    Train & most of Cairo = faded glory. So worth a visit. Try and stay at the Marriott Mena House in Giza. It’s right under the pyramids and is an opulent delight - or at least the old part is. Marriott have given the rest a facelift. Luxor is so interesting. You can also get there on your Nile river cruise.

    In Egypt, train travelling is easy, as nearly all Egypt is "one dimensional". 🙂 I took trains from Cairo to Alexandria and back, from Cairo to Luxor (by day train), from Luxor to Aswaan, And from Aswaan Main to Aswaan Saddu l-'ali (in order to take the ferry to Wadi Halfa in Sudan). I also think this nighttrain is a little bit on the old side and needs some refurbishment. But hei.... everything in Egypt is old. 🙂

    I’m on this train to Aswan now. That mattress might be soft until you lay on it; then it feels the same as sleeping on a floor!! The pillows are good though. Put on an N95 mask to hopefully mask the cigarette smell but it’s not working. The train is very loud and rattles/vibrates a lot. Zero sleep. Not good for a light sleeper (even used a white noise machine and ear plugs). Bathroom looks clean but stinks of urine.

    Have you taken the train down from Budapest down to Lake Balaton. The east side has more towns with the pretty city of Keszthely at the southern end being near Europe's 2nd largest natural thermal lake at Heviz. Try though going down the quieter (and prettier) west side of Balaton, does require a change at Tapolca on an old soveit-era 'Pacers', but there are forests, castles and smaller, more relaxed lake towns.

    @@NonstopEurotrip Oh I see, disgusting, didn't know that. It's disgusting how they apply different prices everywhere. But try to get an Egyptian to buy especially tourist souvenirs for you instead of buying them yourself. That is, I wouldn't recommend anything except the genuine alabaster items they make near the King's Valley in Luxor, clothes in Cairo and maybe a few papyri from Luxor - everything else is cheap tat and exactly the same nonsense that gets sold on ebay especially in the US. And if anyone "recommends" a certain store, or even takes you there, he is being paid commission.

    Lesley and I took this train to Aswan by night in 2010. It hasn't changed - except the vegetarian food - we got plain pasta! Those compartments may be fine for one person, but for two they are awful. The suitcase stowage won't take two 20kg suitcases so there was little floor space. The journey was noisy, frequent stops, lots of shunting noise. Had we known we'd have flown. If you've seen Joanna Lumley's Nile when she make this trip SHE LIED!
