Is Egypt failing to protect its Coptic Christians? | DW Documentary

Egypt's government has been accused of failing to protect its minority of Coptic Christians, after a successful string of attacks by Muslim Egyptians.
For centuries, Christians and Muslims in Egypt have lived alongside each other. Discrimination did occur but generally this coexistence was peaceful. The Christian community today makes up just ten percent of the population. Since the 1980’s however, Christians belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church have increasingly been the target of violence and attacks by Muslim extremists. Guirguis Fawzy is typical of the Christian community in Egypt. Middle class, successful and well networked. Guirguis lives with his family in Suhag in the Nile Valley north of Luxor where he deals in wood. He has relatives in major cities such as Cairo and Alexandria. Like most Copts he considers himself first and foremost an Egyptian, his Christian faith playing only a secondary role in how he sees his own identity. But this relaxed view of his own place in Egyptian society is both rejected and challenged by militant Islamists.
Keen to exploit growing polarization since the 2013 military coup that removed the Muslim Brotherhood from power, Islamic critics of current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s strong-arm tactics have been quick to portray this as evidence of a pro-Christian agenda. It doesn’t take much these days to provoke communal violence. Worse still, a wave of terrorist shootings and bombings targeting Copts has shocked the community leading many to question whether the government is doing enough to protect them.

They dont get that religion aside, the Coptics are the closest they have to native Egyptians and they should respect their history.

Iam a coptic Christian, my parents moved out of Egypt in '73 after Muslim extremists board a train my parents were on and killed any Christians that were on the train (your i.d. In egypt shows what religion you are). After people on the train helped my parents escape from the train, my parents applied for the visa lottery to come to the United States and we've been in the u.s. ever since. So I understand and know how copts get treated in egypt in particular upper egypt like El menya, assuit, Aswan etc. Anywhere muslims dominate they turn the country into a third world country. The muslim brotherhood will be the downfall of my beautiful Egypt (oum el donya).

Although Egypt is our homeland and contains our ancestors’s ancient civilization, it doesn’t seem like there is a future for us there. The majority of the people are Muslim, so it’s a lost cause. The only way for Egypt to foster the Coptic people is for the Muslims to accept their Coptic identity. This doesn’t mean they have to be Christian. Simply changing the language from Arabic to Coptic will mark a big turn of events in modern Egypt.

You know, every time I meet an Egyptian Arab online, they're so proud of their supposed "Ancient Egyptian Heritage." Meanwhile I see this shit going on. Do they not realize that Coptic is the last remaining descendant of the Ancient Egyptian Language? Egyptian Arabs are so proud of their "history" but then you have some of the same people slowly driving the language of the Ancient people they're so proud of to extinction, the majority of Coptic is mainly used religiously by Copts...
