one thing to keep in mind, Tails is 8, the fact that he's competing in intelligence with a genius like Eggman at such a tender age is outstanding, if he's not smarter than him now, he must definitely will be after his brain has fully developed.

This is why I like to assume that Eggman is smarter, because Tails’s potential is THAT high. Sooner or later when Tails grows up Eggman will be completely outmatched to the point where we really wouldn’t need Sonic to be the one to defeat Eggman.

Tails has always been smarter than egg-Man I'm actually mor shocked people don't think its true!?! he's been an UnderDog for so long, so when Prime dropped & we got Nine i was pretty happy to finally meet an evil version of Tails, that's why Nine is "Tough as Bricks" but are Tails isn't.

Eggman must be smarter than Tails or else tension will no longer exist.

Thematically, Eggman being more smart, but his ego getting in the way of his intelligence causing him to overlook one fatal flaw in his plans that Tails, who may not be as smart but takes some quick and out of the box thinking frol Sonic and is able to find and manipulate that one flaw, works very well.

Eggman is a genius, no one's denying that, but I feel like his main issue is that after a certain point he kinda just improvises. He'll come up with a plan and set it in motion but when push comes to shove, he rather keep pushibg instead of actually stepping back and thinking about how he's on the backfoot and how to stay on top. His stubborn ego never allows him to think he may have made a mistep until it's too late.

I see them as equals, they are both geniuses with similar IQs and they both respect each other and recognize each other's intellect, with Eggman recently in Frontiers showing a little "fear" of Tails' evolution potential even though he is very young (being 8 years old) and follow Sonic almost all the time, he's already someone to keep an eye on from now on, so imagine what he'll be like when he gets older and more independent, personally speaking I think it would be cool for him to be a sort of Batman/Iron Man in his own way

We’ve seen the doctor create some extremely intricate and advanced machinery. He has been able to outsmart Sonic and his friends many times. And has even created artificial life with Sage. However, his large ego and underestimation of others often blindsides him at critical moments. Tails on the other hand has made extremely useful gadgets and machines to help Sonic and the others take down the doctor and any other threat. And has shown to be able to stand on par and out do Eggman. However, he’s still relatively young at the end of the day and lacks as much experience as the doctor. Plus, his gullibility has led to the doctor being able to outsmart him such as in SA2 when he tricked Tails to revealing the fake Chaos Emerald. Ultimately, both characters are intelligent in their own ways and both have proven that in many respects.

I think tails has the potential to be smarter, but he’s still very young, so he isn’t able to yet. Eggman kind of got him over with creating an sentient AI While eggman is held back by an ego and childish tendencies, that doesn’t mean he’s not smarter, it means his personality is sour, and in a battle of sheer brains there’s been plenty of times in sonic media where tails has been impressed by things eggman have made

To be fair, having a big ego and stuff signifies a low emotional intelligence. Tails definately has more emotional intelligence, but I think Eggman has more general intelligence.

I think another thing is that Tails is younger and has potential to surpass him and being that he has been able to do more than what Eggman could do not. Eggman is smart but he’s immature and that hinders him. Tails while he had his moments (his argument with Sonic in Lost World) Tails is just humble and kind fox. This (in my opinion) I’d say they’re on par with each other in terms of intelligence but rather its maturity and opportunities for growth that makes the difference.

I see it as more of a matter of budget. Tails clearly has a more modest income as he's usually seen with a small (albeit advanced) workshop and a few transforming planes, while Eggman is clearly a billionaire with the type of things he can procure. How he gets his money who knows, but I'd guess it's not through legal means.

If we go by everything in their history eggman has more feats but tails had bested him. In lost world he saved the planet when eggman probably couldn't. In IDW tails was able to find a cure for the metal virus when Eggman couldn't. Last but not least in Sonic Prime nine outsmarted 5 eggmans and even mangy who is the least intelligent of the tails was able to improve on the egg council tech without even trying. basically I say he has the potential to be smarter than eggman only because he is not as ruthless as Eggman so he wouldn't think of all the possibilities in a situation, eggman thinks of the solutions he has while tails is kind and isn't willing to hurt others. Overall tails is smarter if he can think more with his brain and not his heart.

Sage isn't entirely Eggman's doing, the Ancient's tech is also a big factor in why she became what she is.

I'd like to argue that Eggman is the smarter one based not on the hight of his intellect but on his creativity. Despite the many armies of robots, space stations and various casinos, this is the same man who accomplished an alternative energy instead of fossil fuels(yes, it's still a bad thing), accidentally gave his creations sentience and wills of their own, the man who has physically chained planets, manage to unearth and awaken ancient beings, accidentally create time travel, create interdimentional space travel, create tangible illusions and almost utilized the power of dreams In that same vein, tails is also a genius but in terms of scope, he has only done things to counter and poke though the many holes in Eggman's plans, something really impressive was how he was able to actually replicate a chaos emerald, a feat even Eggman hasn't done and still hasn't. In the end, I have to give it Eggman only because it's his plans that incite the adventure

No and yes and I think that Eggman was smarter than Tails in the two Games were SA1 and SA2 because Eggman was always getting ahead of Tails, and in SA2 Tails thought he could trick Eggman but Eggman already knew that Tails had a fake Emerald and that’s what I call Eggman being smarter than Tails. The Sonic Game that I found Eggman a little smarter than Tails was Sonic Forces was when Tails thought they destroy the Ruby but Eggman made an another Ruby in Forces. I think a massive factor that holds Eggman back also is just... the writing. Yes, this is kinda a cope answer but Eggman is always being shafted by poor writing and stories and it's basically became part of his personality to self-sabotage to allow the heroes victory.

hate to be this guy but when it comes to good vs evil, Evil always loses but i will say it's a tie since they both are equally smart and yes Tails is a very gifted child who is always trying to help everyone even if he has self doubt (as seen in frontiers and forces)

Tails having 300 IQ was stated in the instruction booklet for Sonic Heroes.

I think Tails is smarter than Dr. Eggman for one main reason: Tails is only 8 and he rivals Eggman who is over 50 years old. As he grows into adulthood he'll no doubt become smarter. So even if Eggman is smarter right now, it's only a matter of time before it's not a competition. He also has some feats similar to Sonic, so he could grow into one of the most powerful characters in the franchise. Or maybe ages don't matter in this franchise and character growth doesn't exist idk

I would say Eggman is technically smarter than Tails, but perhaps not by a lot. It seems to me like Tails wouldn't be capable of creating sentient life artificially, whereas Eggman has been able to do so numerous times pretty much without trying. When it comes to their difference in ego, that's what makes their battles of wits somewhat evenly matched. Tails has a relatively low self-esteem which holds back his potential in some ways, but makes him less prone to childish mistakes. Eggman thinks he knows everything, so he gets blind-sided by simple lapses in judgement. However, it also means Eggman doesn't let setbacks keep him down. He has a tenacity that only Sonic can match and keeps trying until he succeeds because he truly believes in his own genius. Eggman's the perfect foil to Sonic because neither one will give up and they both can back up their arrogance with pure talent. Sonic may have some who can keep up with him but when it really comes down to it he is THE FASTEST, and Eggman has some who can compete with him intellectually but at the end of the day it makes sense for him to be THE SMARTEST.

I think Sonic Prime would also have been important in this discussion, and by that same token so should IDW considering they’re both canon. Now while Tails and Nine are two different people, they’re really the same person just split apart across the shatterverse. As such their abilities should reasonably be the same, meaning anything Nine was capable of, so is Tails. Same applies to all the other versions of the characters, but still it’s Nine that matters for this discussion, and I suppose the Chaos Council as well.

Being smart and being wise are two different things. Even the smartest individuals can make foolish decisions. Eggman’s ego is a testament to his lack of wisdom, not the lack of intelligence.

I still say Eggman have shown more impressive feats over Tails in terms of intelligence but Tails got the potential to surpass him once he's older and more independent. Tails most impressive feat is creating the fake emerald that still manage to use some of the real chaos emeralds abilities, but Eggman is still a genius for creating a robot that rivals Sonic, build air fleets a couple of times, create a fake phantom ruby that utilizes it's abilities, Sage, build theme parks even in outer space thxs to Colors, knowledgeable when it comes to ancient history, and building machines that can manipulate time. Only problem with Eggman is that ya his weakness is that he got a big ego like Sonic and can be childish. Tails ironically is the opposite. Tails is a child but he also suffer some self doubt issues until Frontiers ending and usually had to rely on his friends for some help (Hope Sega/Sonic Team doesn't do another Tails being insecure again and have to go through the same "learn to be independent" arc again). I think once Tails got confidences in himself again and don't always rely on Sonic or anyone else, then we will really Tails' true potential especially if he grows older and be able to surpass the mad doctor himself.

The reason I said that was from a narrative perspective and not what necessary what they did. My reasoning was Sa2 ending credits and Sonic Frontiers the final horizen. Both have Eggman talking to or about Tails as if he was less experienced and had potential. And in the egg memos, Eggman says that tails wastes his potential with Sonic which I interpret as if Tails was with Eggman, then Tails would be smarter. I understand Eggman has an Ego but in these specific moments, I feel it's Eggman at his most sincere

Between the two one of them is more emotionally stable, yet the other is really ambitious which the young fox admires or apprieciates, Dr. Eggman's work ethic and if not held back by emotional vulnerabilities, he would be showing his true caliber, which I think he can get Sonic, Eggman knows more things since he is an adult that had alot of experience being very familiar with machinery with numerous designs of his robots and with quality of life things, and seen alot of things "craftable" he can probably create a quartz machine for example if it's there, I think he does alot of other things other than what he does. Eggman's is likely an expert of creating robots small size to massive size knowing basically everything related, I don't know the quanity of gadgets, tools, or inventions he creates convinent quality of life items, unsure if it's secondary or part of primary, yet in Sonic Unleashed his Technology of giving him a sandwitch is one example; as he is showing that I'm convinced that he does have advanced designs of alot of things on the level of genius and creativity, his shelf windows gives alot of ideas of creativity it's unexplainable by words, I think he created lots of mind-blowing things beyond convention of the consciousness. Tails gives alot of time constructively creating quality of life items, assets or inventions, with many gadgets for fun like his "Polymer spray?" that keeps gloves white, that is what he told the audience in their group Twitter takeover, I guess Tails is doing chemistry; he is definitely doing alot of programming and network connections, yet since he is a young one that never had a home other than a forest, until he eyed on sonic, he would have alot of things to assist, guide, get used to realize, learn to change the behavior, feelings, and thinking, for positive actions; because of things he experienced before he met Sonic, which if said to him will definitely change, and he has change after he met sonic and do so in a neutral way. Synapes are impressive for both. Sonic is keep destroying the red ones army it adds to the fire of his.

Also even tho this character is now "dead" and got beaten by Eggman, still an underrated genius imo is Starline. Like Zavok said, if bro haven't been fanboying over Eggman and actually try to be an evil genius on his own, then Eggman could gotten another rival if the writers kept him alive. I mean the dude studied n obtained the Warp Topaz, actually trapped and almost manage to kill Sonic n Silver, was able to make a device that gave characters super speed, technique, n strength (Basically Heroes), and plus was the one who created Surge n Kit along with having a lab that even impressed Eggman. Even tho ya IDW has it's problems, I think Starline could have been an interesting evil genius n rival for Tails n Eggman but like Prime being a wasted potential, the writers had to axe out Starline which that's a bummer :/

I think Eggman is more capable of building grander things than Tails is In Sonic Adventure 1 Tails is impressed by the Egg Carrier, and one of his dialogues says that someday he wants to build something like that ship The Egg Carrier is supposed to reflect Tails' creation in SA1, because Tails just created that the Tornado 2, that just like the Egg Carrier is a flying vehicle that can change modes, and Tails still gets super surprised by the Egg Carrier changing modes I also think Eggman even though is more childish, he is more resonable than Tails sometimes, after all, Tails may be super smart, but he still is a kid, and sometimes the complexity of something will make him give a step back For example, in Sonic Frontiers when Tails and Eggman chat about the Ancients technology, Tails says that all of that seems like magic, from how complex they are, and Eggman in response say that Tails quote is stupid, that the Ancients technology may be really complex for both to understand as far as their knowlodge goes, but explaining something simply by "magic" is not something a genius would do, but instead find a scientifically awnser for everything, and he also says that someday he will do that There is also the fact that when Tails messes with Eggman's machines, he often says that it's hard for him to deal with due to Eggman's weird coding, while Eggman says that Tails' gizmos are really easy to mess with and modify, of course, as Tails say Eggman's coding must be a bit weird, with random lines of code saying random things such as "EGGMAN", etc. But still is curious the fact that Tails has difficulties modifying Eggman's mechs while Eggman doesn't for Tails (well, at least in Sonic Boom, since I don't remember he modifying a Tails' gizmo in a game) And the fact that Eggman managed to trick Tails sometimes Eggman also says in Frontiers that if Tails wasn't so dependent on Sonic he would be brilliant and unleash his full potential So what I like to think, is that Tails is not smarter than Eggman, but he has the potential and when he grows up and becomes indepentent he will be much smarter than Eggman ever could be, like, Eggman is on his 50ths, while Tails is a small child, so Tails will get to his full potential and surpass Eggman, becoming the greatest scientific genius in the world

I've always seen Tails and Eggman to be around equal intelligence. Whichever one of them would win in a 1 v 1 fight would be heavily dependent on the situation in my opinion.

I mean, I'd say Robotnik is smarter by default: The man has made a cobalt terminator with an AI so advanced it was able to go insane, gain freewill, and entirely surpass all Eggman's other constructs by it's own hands. As the man said, "To surpass expectations is the ultimate of genius". Memory serves, Tails can't even get a simple translator working quite right.

Personally, I think they're equals.

On a technical Level Eggman Beats Tails 100%. Since His knowledge about Time and Space and even Artificial Intellegence ist very far Advantage and Tails hasnt shown any feat. Secondly Tails lacks on the creativity that Eggman has. While Eggman creates the wildest things Like Casinos or an VR-Reality World Tails keeps it simple and mechanic. One very Bad weakness of Tails is His "inconsistency" like adressed in Frontiers (Its mostly Bad charcters writing but i think sometimes Eggmans Ego is also really Bad written Like in Unleashed, Forces or Generation) even with experience Tails can get overwhelmed when the pressure is really big even thought He has evercome it once. Maybe its Just my opinion but I think that Tails is a Bad Winner. In SA2 when he won He didnt even think about checking on Eggman and even left him behind what resulted in Eggman getting away with the Last Emerald or in Lost World where his Ego was a pain in the Ass and Made him seem arrogant after the Egg Robo Battle

Eggman is smarter, Tails is more stable. Where Eggman is absolutely capable of some insane feats of mad science, he is too far gone to reliably replicate his findings or learn from his experiences. He's constantly flicking from one flash of inspiration to the next to produce things beyond what could be reasonably expected.

Eggman is very intelligent but he lacks of WISDOM. He is smart but stupid.
