At fifteen I had a breakdown in the doctor's office and they couldn't figure out how to help me because everything was normal (and nobody connected the dots unfortunately). I can't tell you WHY I feel that way, but my brain and my body feels opposed with each other. It's incredibly uncomfortable and sometimes I want to just peel my skin off to the point I stim compulsively, though. If you're asking me why I trust my doctors, it's because I've done my research. I know who I'm going to, I know their reputation, I know what they should be giving me based on the recommended practice (and my own preferences for needle size for hormone injections) and I know that, even if something were to go wrong, I'm still happier than I was before I came out permanently.

A lot of autistic people will feel non-binary because the way that the gender construct exists doesn't make sense with the way our brains categorize things. Now on the contrary side, some autistic people are very into rules as written/taught and will be able to put themself in a binary box which might be their sex assigned at birth. So while it's not like ALL autistic people are trans, we are more likely to be trans or gender non conforming than non autistic people.

Adding socially constructed identities is more a recipe for discrimination, the likes of which early feminists fought so hard to try to rid the world of. Seeing people in terms of their biological differences is important for things like medicine as those differences make a noticable impact on what's most effective in medical treatment. And it's easier to rid the world of discrimination if there's less denominations by which to split up the human species. Frankly, I've never seen merit behind forming social identities like these of any sort.

I’m actually happy to see this kind of interaction, Dr Murphy is curious about this girl’s gender identity and basically how she became who she is in body mind and heart, as I see it, Murphy understands the human anatomy by remembering books that he read but doesn’t understand how the human heart and mind works when it comes to gender or sexual identity and tbh I understand that from both the girl and Murphy, I have felt for YEARS (almost 10 years to be exact) trying to understand why I wasn’t comfortable dressing like a girl and then I try being a guy it didn’t feel right either sometimes, going back and forth of “am I bi-gender? Am I non-binary?” It was tough once I truly figured it out with help from my husband and realized I am gender fluid, I had to face the “Dr Murphy” in my life, my grandmother, she doesn’t understand what the LGTBQ+ is and what she knows is what she learned from her life before the concept of LGTBQ+ even came into existence, so it’s still tough to explain it to her, which is why this scene alone makes me smile and proud to be who I am.

I'm trans and autistic, so I can relate to both of these characters in different ways. Murphy had a lot of development when interacting with this patient, he started off a bit stuck, transphobic, though not on purpose. It came from a place of lacking understanding and he learned really fast when that need for understanding was pointed out to him. Asking questions is okay, even encouraged as long as you're genuinely curious and not trying to make fun of anyone. And he absolutely is being genuine here. This is how people should be, try to learn and understand and just respect that people are different and that different is okay. Best way to learn is to ask questions.

Autism isn’t something you can get away from by just interacting with people. People with autism have a hard time being subtle or non-blunt about their experiences, opinions, wants, and thoughts. I have a little brother whose autistic, he says whatever he feels without embarrassment or discomfort, sometimes he says things like “I don’t love you” and sometimes it does hurt a little when it feels like he means it, but I know my brother is just a little angry and doesn’t have the same tools people without autism have to deal with their inner thoughts and emotions.

The show is amazing at representing autism for those who don't understand social cues, sarcasm, things that break they're logic, interaction with others, as well as the ability to be absolutely blunt asf with no care 😂 and thinking in a way that most people don't

@@kyloluma I’m going to do my best to explain how it feels to be trans, but if you still have questions I’d be more than happy to answer. It’s kind of like if you had a rock in your shoe your whole life, and you lived with it even though it was uncomfortable and made you feel bad, then one day you mention it to someone and they say “what? People don’t have rocks in their shoes.” Of course this would lead to confusion, but eventually you decide to take the rock out of your shoe. To represent the different stages of transition let’s say the rock is a bunch of tiny pebbles because it’s been crushed. Socially transitioning (ex. Changing name, going by preferred pronouns, etc) is like taking the first chunk of pebbles out of your shoe, it feels so much better, but there’s still rocks in there (obv some trans people never go past this step as they are comfortable here, and that’s completely okay). Then you begin hrt, another huge chunk of pebbles gone. Then, after months of hrt and at least a year of social transition, you are able to get gender confirmation surgery if you’re above 18 (which usually comes with at least a 4 month wait), and with that step (usually) that is the final chunk of pebbles removed. Now you can walk around with no rock in your shoe, just as everyone else is, comfortable in your own shoes. Sorry for the super long reply, I hope I helped, again if you have any more questions I’m happy to answer, have a great day!!

You were born a girl or a boy. You can't change your sex. If someone have problem with socialising it is doesn't mean she or he have different gender. But culture of this days saying to you opposite things because of "tolerance", they saying "you can be anyone you want" forgetting about biology and common sens. And some people are like "oh, ok. If I have some problems, maybe it is because I am not my gender". No. You are who you are. Maybe you going through hard times. Maybe you need some help. But you shouldn't think you can change biology. Because this is all artificially. Surgeries, hormones - this is not a change of sex. This will not change DNA. And you shouldn't succumb to propaganda of 21 century. Fish don't want to be a fox, fish is who it is. And when a human wanted to fly, human didn't try to become a bird. Human invented a plane. If you want to find your happiness, you should work on yourself, learn something new, be a good and decent person, try to figure out your problems, maybe to find some help, this is ok, but not to try to go against the nature and to become someone you never will.

More accurately, there's a disconnect between the brain's mental image of the self, the body's image, and society's view of the person. For another little bit of shorthand: it's sort of like anorexia, where the person will always perceive themselves to be overweight no matter how skinny they get. The only real difference, is that the best treatment method we've found to alleviate the distress for trans people, is gender transition. Letting people fill the societal and social roles that best allign with their sense of self. Letting them modify their bodies to better be in line with the the brain's image of the self. It’s not a difficult thing for a cisgender girl to play a transgender girl, because transgender girls are girls and don’t “look” a certain way, the way you’ve phrased it makes it seem like you’re upset that they chose a cisgender girl to play a transgender girl because she doesn’t “look like a transgender person”?

This is the problem when you are normal no one gives you any attention or they bully you so you decide what if I change myself then they will not make fun of me, I will be special, I will get noticed but what you actually doing is running away from the reality, instead of facing your fears you just run from it, which is a sign of weakness. People say you're very brave that you "Came Out of the Closet" but the reality is you are so afraid of the world, of the reality that you put yourself deep into the closest.

As an Autistic person that has grown up around other autistic people, both trans and non-trans. There are a lot of autistic people that have different views on different topics as is true with anything. That may include this topic too. Some autistic people will struggle to understand, and that’s okay. Some will not care either way. Others may be trans themselves or have experience with exploring gender identity. It is true, autistic people have a higher percentage of people that are gender diverse, however, please keep in mind that there are lots of autistic people that are cisgender as well as trans. I think this scene was written really well because Autistic people think in black and white. This is what some autistic people will do, and like the doctor, they may struggle to understand. It takes a little guidance and explanation to help them understand. They usually (in my experience) will accept after a little time, love, and patience. Gender is extremely complex, extremely “grey” as the autistic community says. The thing about autism is black and white thinking, the world is extremely confusing. Absolutes, the familiar are more mentally comfortable and less stressful. Again, the doctor eventually came around. I’m sure a good percentage of autistic people would come around as well. That’s my opinion, keep in mind.

I love this omg I wanna see the full episode now! I saw and earlier clip yesterday and omg I hated how the other staff kept shutting Dr. Murphy down just for being extremely curious and wanting to understand this new form of information he's been presented with. He's not even asking in a condescending way, they got more offended than the patient which was a little sad tbh.

Doctor Murphy is one of the most logical people ever shown on television, we can all agree on this. He thinks only in the correct and incorrect right and wrong. So, his initial reaction to a trans woman is uncertain of course, because biologically, it should be incorrect. But he, using his own unique perspective on the situation, Understands how people can be different, and chooses to ask more questions rather than block the unknown out. He is someone we can all take notes from in our everyday lives
