Is Denji A Victim? | A Deep Dive Into Anime Culture and Victimisation, in Chainsaw Man

Фильм және анимация

There's a lot that we can dive into with Chainsaw Man, but with the recent chapters, I think it's worth exploring what has happened to Denji.

Video is filled with spoilers and potentially triggering subjects fyi There aren't that many popular mainstream comics/manga that discuss male victims, the other one that comes to mind is Invincible, but Chainsaw Man really goes deep into all of this, and it does it in a really interesting way. Fujimoto has briefly discussed how a woman did bully him, and he did like it to some degree, which inspired him to write Makima. Think about this interview and how writing is used as a therapy technique to write through traumas and issues and get a better understanding, I think that that is potentially part of what we're seeing here in a way. I can't wait to see what we might find in the next chapters

I know! I really hope that Denji will have some positivity in his life soon. Seeing him in the most recent chapters was just devastating 😭

Yeah, I definitely agree with this take. I think a lot of people just aren't really reading the story, or they only care for the action parts. I'm kind of tired of seeing the same "ha ha dumb thing happened to Denji" tweets, when what's happening Is actually sad...

Yeah, especially with the new chapter that just dropped recently, we're starting to see the type of effect this is having on Denji 😥

Just some things: - Denji didn't drink when he was with Himeno, he specifically said he got tea. - Reze did actually want to run away with Denji, shown by her trying to go to the coffee shop at the end of the arc and was stopped by Makima. Her mission just came first and she was one of the children who were trapped in that room in Russia, which is why she says that she didn't go to school either. - Denji is not a fiend, he's a weapon hybrid. Fiends have the personality of the devil that took over, albeit with some traits from the host's body and has access to their devil abilities at will. Meanwhile, Denji retained his personality completely and has to activate his transformation through the ripcord on his chest into his Chainsaw Man form. - There was a time skip that happened between parts 1 and 2, he was 16 through the majority of part 1 and turns 17 near the end and around 17-18 in part 2. Other than that, solid video.

To match your points - Even though Denji didn't drink, my point was more Himeno trying to pressure him to drink, and having them in that setting, but yes I do remember that he got tea - The Reze thing about whether or not she wants to leave with Denji, I do believe that she wants to run away with Denji, I think I maybe misspoke and rather mean that her feelings on whether or not she genuinely likes him in the same way is open to interpretation, as she could just want to run away, and she might only feel friendship. The extent of her feelings is a little more open to interpretation but yes good point! - In the beginning when Power, Aki and Denji I teamed up it's stated that he's similar to Power who is a fiend, and I was more speaking to how Power would see them the same, as both fiends, but thanks for the clarification :) - Ah yes, I said 16 not 17 for part two, and should've said that in Part One I liked that even though it's a Shonen and he's 16, we're not put in a high school setting, which later changes for part two. I believe he is definitely 17 around the Fumiko incident, still making him a minor in comparison to the 22 year old. But 18 during the Yoru/Asa incident (correct me if I'm wrong). Both incidents being wrong in itself, but Asa and Denji I believe are to be around the same age, whereas the Fumiko incident, she should know better. Thank you for watching! Still got to work on being more specific in my videos, but personally I think reading through a story like this with the mind set of these incidents in order to analyze them, is tough and perhaps that's why some minor details slipped, as I think I became a bit more emotional than I would've liked for an analytical mindset while going through it 😅

@@thetkennedy Part 1 takes place in 1997 which is given away in the news when the Gun Devil attacked near the end of that storyline, and part 2 takes place in 1999 which is given away when Fami and Hirofumi were talking about Nostradamus' prophecy and how it predicts that devils will take over during that summer in 1999 in chapter 122, which means Denji is most definitely 18 as of where we are in part 2.
