Upisode 6: Mariah Carey (Up next!)
1. Belted Notes
For a note to be considered Golden, it must be consistently "perfect" in the vocalists' range. They must be able to sustain it with resonance, and be able to sing it with resonance on a very consistent basis.
Golden: 3.0 points
Ringing inconsistent/consistently grounded: 2.5
Grounded inconsistent: 2
Free consistent: 1.75
Inconsistently free: 1
Tense: .5
Underbelts are notes that are ringing under the vocalists' starting note, and as Lara is a soprano that means notes under G4. They can either earn 1 point for inconsistent resonance, or 1.5 for consistent.
2. Low Notes
Golden: 2.0
Full Fairly Consistently: 1.75
Inconsistently full: 1.25
Inconsistently free: 0.75
Tense/Airy: 0.25
3. Head Voice
Golden: 2.0
Inconsistently Resonant or consistently grounded 1.75
Inconsistently grounded 1.25
Inconsistently free 0.75
Tense 0.25
4. Whistle Notes
Golden: 0.3
Not golden but Musical: 0.2
Off-key: 0.1
7. Vocal Control:
Here is Stamina explained!
1/4: First Song -vs- Last Song: This point is earned if the vocalist is able to sing the last song in their concert just as well as the first.
Demi earns this point. Comparing Holy Fvck to Cool For The Summer in her current tour proves it!
2/4: First Show -vs- Last Show: This point is earned if the vocalist is able to perform their last show in a tour to the same height as their first.
Demi always improves as her tours progress. She earns this point.
3/4: This point is earned if the vocalist did not rely on lipsyncing to perform their more challenging songs.
Demi never lip-syncs or subs her performances. Only once during a pandemic performance has this ever been an issue, and it was likely not her choice.
4/4: This point is earned if the vocalist consistently adds ad-libs that are not in the studio versions of their songs to their live performances.
Demi constantly does this to her own songs and covers.
8. Vocal Effects:
For each skill that the vocalist is capable of, they earn a point. If they are a master of this skill, they earn two points.
9. (Lack of) Vocal Issues: Here, if the vocalist has any major issues, they are deducted a varying amount of points from the ten given in this category.
10. Consistency/Longevity: If the vocalist has struggled with consistency in the past or has drastically declined from their prime, they will have points deducted in this category from 5.

Update: As I’m watching this back, I realize Demi should have earned a 5 in vocal effects, not a 6. Bad math! Her score is 96.40!

Demi is a very powerful singer. I do notice unnecessary tension throughout her entire range but she absolutely has shown freedom above C5. She also has a nice C#3! Insane! I do miss her 2009-2013 tone, but her approach is completely different now. She seems to care more about ease now than core. My dream Demi would be old tone with today's ease. Edit: One thing I do disagree with is the dynamic section. Demi has not really showcased any strong dynamic control.

Demi is a Queen. People used to think she had no free notes above C5, which is wrong. I think her F#5 in Anyone at the Grammys was free. It sounded clear to me. Her lows are really good and that free E3 surprised me. Her belts are incredible powerful despite some issues she has with tension. Her head voice solid, it could use more development, but she has many good G#5s and A5s in head voice. Overall she's a very naturally talented and amazing vocalist!

I think you should take into consideration another factor in your scoring system - Frequency of sustained notes. Someone who sustains for 5 seconds regularly must be considered better in sustaining than someone who sustains for 10 seconds on one magical day.

If any of you don’t know what CVSS means, please read! CVSS stands for Camden’s Vocalist Scoring System. It’s is basically a point value system I made up years ago and have adjusted a few times since, but a way to determine a numerical value to how “good” a vocalist is. Obviously that can’t really be measured, but this is just my take on the idea. Take it with a grain of salt, though I do try and prove every claim I make. I hope you enjoy, and please keep all discussion civil! Follow my Instagram! @camden.epperson

Overall good analysis, but I must notice, you're often confusing nasality with nasal twang, they often sound similar, but in reality it's not the same thing. Nasal twang is a WIDELY used technique in pop-music, singers like Demi/Ariana/Tori/even Mariah at some point of her career was heavily relying on it in order to belt with ease, which is completely ok and even welcomed, cause usage of twang allows you to be more versatile with your voice and lack of twang leads to voice problems and inconsistency. Oral twang is more used outside of pop-music cause it sounds very different and it sound isn't what we're used to hear within this kind of genre True nasality is not what you're hearing here. Nasality is an unnecessary habit, but it's not dangerous or something, it's just not desirable in majority of cases, a singer with true nasality usually sounds "flat", like the voice lacks volume, if you know what I mean Also, her vibrato is just a bit off, not as bad as people tend to think, in most cases it's just too wide, hence an abrupt change from clear belt to somewhat muffled belt, cause of the width of the note itself, it can be fixed, though, nothing too difficult And I kinda disagree with your statements about "mastery". Thing is, many people just throw this word around like it's nothing, but ask yourself, just cause some singer ONCE showcased something, does it mean they truly MASTERED it? It's same old issue with Mariah's G5, for example, she ONLY has 4 of them live (and 1 of those 4 is dubbed, other 2 are flat and only 1 is perfectly centred), but people immediately decided, for some reason, that it's within her free range, just cause she was lucky not to crack up there. Does it sounds like a true mastery for you? Like true total freedom? I think you have your answer if you're being honest here Same applies to all kinds of vocal effects/techniques etc etc etc, you can't just hear Demi using vocal break ONCE and say something like "vocal break mastery", it's simply illogical

Hypernasality vs Hyponasality. Neither are considered desirable as they both have a muting effect...we know thats in a western classical setting. I 'm aware that it is taught in classical schools now, but its is heavily criticized. Now for contemporary singing I think its not much of a deal technique wise. But people don't usually like nasality in certain genres.
