I hate competing. I am too "nice" and can't match my opponents intensity, even when rolling in the gym sometimes. Plus I have negative thoughts that if I lose in front of my teammates or coaches, they'll be embarrassed by me and I'll have let them down. I've had 7 matches so far and lost them all. Despite this, I do compete occasionally, and have one coming up in a couple of months.

All I can say is keep going. This was actually my first tournament win in a few years so it really made all of the sacrifices worth it. I just had to stay patient and keep working.

I know the feeling, I've competed several times and I have yet to place. The reason I like to compete is because to me it's the closest thing I'm going to get to a real life fight in regards to intensity. As a 40+ year old, it motivates me to stay committed to keep going. The work up to the tournament is what I do not like, but at the same time it's very satisfying.

I can relate to this a lot. I love training but I just don't have that competitive killer instinct in me. I've been training for almost five years now and I often tap guys from my club that compete but I just know if I sign up for a competition all it will do is cause me stress and take away all the good feelings I get from Jiu Jitsu in the months leading up to it. Even if I medalled it wouldn't be worth it. The people that love to compete are just programmed differently and will never understand this.

I love competition - it gives me something to focus on and I love the mental battle I have with myself in the days leading up to a tournament and once again in the bullring waiting to step on the mat. Everyone should get out of their comfort zones and compete

Im a BJJ blue belt. I've been training for 4 years now. I have competed in the past won and lost matches. For me competing is not worth it. I find it too expensive, and you need to prepare alot for the competition. Watching your Diet and weight cutting. Making sure to be on the right weight. Traveling. Higher risk of Injury. It's too much stress and money imo. I'd rather go to a seminar and roll with different people to learn. And I don't like the points system. If I would join a competition I'd rather do a Submission Only tournament. In our Gym we can roll 100% with our training partners if we agree to it. But I have lots of respect for people who compete. I know how much work and discipline it is to prepare for it. But for me right now it's not worth it. Maybe in the future again. Sorry if my English is bad. I'm from Europe.

The last weekend I had my first tournament as a white belt, I was nervous as fuck, but I still managed to stay focused. I got the gold. And I loved the experience. In my last match I was losing by points 7-0, but I managed to get a RNC and get the win. And it helped me to see a lot of flaws in my game. I hope to compete again once the university is over.

As a 39 year old 4 stripe white belt I’ve competed like 7 times lol. It costs a lot of money, takes a toll on your nerves, but it’s worth it imo! My 10 year old son also competes. Being able to compete and travel across the US and Canada is worth more than money.

Yeah competing sucks! but I do compete. I find it helps you progress 10x faster. It's not just about learning which techniques work and don't on a 100% setting and then filtering those techniques out. I find the process of getting to match fitness the great separator from the average student or your peers at your current belt. You find out who you are, how much heart you have and how deep can you go when your on your 3rd or 4th match or fighting for gold. The 3-6 months of intense 'training camp' creates 'positive' flashbacks wherein you're not fazed by intense rolls anymore or spazzy sparring partners. You're just used to it. You've embraced the suck. Normal rolling will be a lot more chill, meaning you've progressed faster.

I think this is less true than ever with the rise of semi and full time athletes. If you train 3-4 times a week you will face people who are full time competitors and you won't stand a chance. It's great for experience but if getting repeatedly destroyed in something you do for a hobby isn't your cup of tea leave it.
