Is CO2 the future of NERF dart propulsion or did we get REKT?

REKT has been making CO2 NERF Dart shooters for a few years now and the REKT Jury is their latest offering, but their previous offerings were...pretty lackluster, to say the least. The Opsix and Opfour were pretty forgettable, but like a good company they went back to the drawing board and tried something completely different and quite honestly exactly what I had planned to do with one of Umarex's other products: a short dart one-hand wieldable revolver. It's here, it's $50, and is it any good? Is this the future of NERF dart propulsion?

    Keep in mind Co2 isn't compressed air. It's actually a liquid that turns into a gas as it's expelled. This makes it subject to temperature. If it's warm you'll get more pressure. If it's cold you'll get less. If you fire quickly it'll cool down and make pleasure pressure. Take your time between shots. Also a fresh cart will have more liquid and more pressure. As you fire it'll go down. Also these are straight unregulated pressures. If you had a regulator in between the cartridge and the gun you could set the PSI to say 80fps and see more consistency.

    CO2 has the annoying habit of dropping performance very quickly in my experience, which in turn throws off distances and aiming outside of very close-range targets. A cool idea but I just don't see it becoming very mainstream. That and one of the biggest perks of foam blasters is that you don't pay for 'consumables' as Luchathor aptly put it. Darts do get worn/ripped/damaged over time but only getting at best 5 or so cylinders worth of shots per CO2 cartridge and then having to disassemble your gun afterwards to reload a second form of ammunition, essentially, is kinda obtrusive. I could MAYBE see if there was a rifle style of this idea, where you have a magazine for your short darts and a grip-fed 'magazines' for your CO2 cartridges, that way you could swap magazines and cartridges faster.

  • @TheBlargMarg

    @TheBlargMarg

    @@TheBlargMarg Agreed. I keep a pretty decent sized box of CO2 cartridges around and they're not like prohibitively expensive, but the cumbersome reloads and noticeable power dropoff just doesn't give enough reliable performance gain over flywheelers or even just a really beefy springer.

    I wouldn't be surprised if that's (part of) why HPA seems to be getting more popular in the dart spaces than CO2. While you need specialised equipment to prepare the tanks, you appear to get more shots out of it, more consistent FPS, and the tanks themselves are reusable.

    @@fiuridistroyer6205 It's something I've noticed on my airsoft pistol, really. I have one of the older parkerized 1911's by Cybergun and I mainly use it for plinking, but never picked up a second magazine since they're like 45 dollars each. Usually by the time I'm about through the second load of rounds(right around 25th since it has a capacity of like 15 I think) is where I can feel the blowback of the slide not moving as snappy as it should and start to feel a dropoff in velocity shot-after-shot from that point. By the time I get through a third magazine-load it's basically throwing, not firing. It's possible it's just a poor experience on my part, I guess? I mean the first magazine cycles great and has plenty of punch, but it just doesn't hold at that level of performance in my experience.

    here in Australia land they'd be considered actual fire arms, though hilarious, i do think there needs to be serious consideration put to these beyond plinking. I work in a paintball field, a controlled environment and even then sometimes we have incidents with accidental discharge and it's difficult to safely perform any maintenance on any air powered anything without proper knowledge. So for paintball enthusiasts who want something cool to plink with, probably a hard cop But for the general consumer, i'd steer clear. I have a modded Nexus Pro that, while spring powered, I'm certain clears 200 fps. At the least, the spring upgrade alone is rated to bring that blaster to about 180 with the stock barrel, and I've brassed mine on top of that. I kept the safety on that blaster because, while it's bright orange with an orange SCAR attachment and everything, I do not want anybody accidentally pointing that thing at anyone else. I treat that one like my baby, and almost exactly like a real firearm. I'm clear about sight lines, finger is off the trigger, clearing the blaster before checking it or anything, etc. While I have never, and will never, point it at anyone without their consent and without full control of the situation, I do sometimes let a few younger friends handle it because I like sharing that side of nerf with them. The safety gives me that crucial second or 2 I'd need in case one of them decided to do something, even while I'm supervising them.

    Those 12gram co2 carts will afford you about 30-50 shots so the fps going lower is 100% caused by the co2 the less in the canister the less pressure. Plus co2 don't like cold. And weather to hot will also effect the pressure. Same with elevation. 2 of my airsoft co2 pistols chronos at 320 another at 440 and my 4.5 mm crosman SNR.357 shoots at 500 fps. My lowest powered airsoft replica is a BB tactical m83 AEG and it chronos at 240 fps. The O rings in the 1 gun sounded damaged.

    All double action revolvers i have used have a heavy pull for the first round. Most double action then I guess sort of recock the hammer or it is "cycled" you could say like this weird half cock so you only have a single action feeling pull for the next 4-5 rounds depending upon cylinder capacity. This probably just replicates the first double action pull because real firearms don't have to make room for a co2 cylinder. Or you can just start off by cocking the hammer and your first shot is a single. Then the rest are part of the double action cycle which I guess is really like a 1 and a half they just configure the first round fired from no cock to go through an extra half cycle.

    You guys got to be careful releasing that CO2 gas like that if there's a lot left it comes out very cold and it can damage the seals inside the pistol if you're going to release the gas you've got to give it a moment to warm up otherwise the seals will crack and you'll lose pressure

    This is almost identical to the airsoft H8r revolver (which is made by the same company). The mechanism and parts required to maintain pressure on a CO2 gun is fairly pricey so $50 is actually fairly reasonable coming from an airsofter.

    I work at a paintball shop, and the reason why the chrono is so inconsistent and seems to drop with every shot is because of temperature. The faster you fire, the colder the cartridge gets and the lower the chrono. I think this would be better off using hpa and a remoteline because hpa does this way less.

    If you fire it quickly the gas pressure drops suddenly to propel the projectile. This causes expansion of the CO2 still in the capsule, and due to adiabatic processes, will lower its temperature. You're losing gas pressure because it's literally freezing in the cylinder. If you wait between shots, it won't drop as quickly. Of course, you also have the normal drop in pressure as the CO2 is used up ALONG WITH the gas freezing in the cylinder. Try firing a shot and waiting 10 seconds, then firing another shot. If it has some time to sublimate some gas off the dry ice in the cylinder, you'll have more pressure in that shot. When the dry ice from adiabatic expansion is gone, and there's just gas left, it will quickly lose muzzle velocity until the cylinder is dry. The accuracy problem is due to the fact that it's a smoothbore. So the darts aren't being spun to stabilize them. They're subject to some wobbling and tumbling force, which is translated into "wild" shots and poor groupings. If you get accuracy from a 3-4" smoothbore barrel that's better than a pitched baseball, you're doing pretty well. Then there's elastic properties of the squishy plastic dart and the stiffness of the rubber tip that just add chaos into the system that changes the center of mass of the dart as it unevenly expands in flight. Even the Umarex HDR .50 that you referenced earlier has issues with accuracy due to the fairly short smoothbore barrel. You CAN get a longer barrel kit for the HDR, but it's still smoothbore. Some bullet-maker kits do address this with angled fins moulded into the casting, so the bullets spin a little as air travels over them and applies angular momentum. The HDR doesn't come with any orange whatsoever, so you must treat it as something a cop or member of the general public is going to perceive as a firearm. But I really like the HDR because of the ability to fire pepper balls (except in California, where they refuse to admit that pepper balls exist). They're not cheap, but they're available. I carry my HDR in a shoulder holster when I go for walks, first magazine all steel-bearing rubber, subsequent magazines 3 heavy rubber, 3 pepper, of which I carry 2. I also carry a couple of extra CO2 cylinders and an allen wrench. Why do I bother carrying this thing? Because of the damn paperwork and legal issues from using an actual firearm these days! Less-than-lethal is currently more likely to be treated as just that, especially the pepper rounds being treated as mace or pepper spray. I *could* easily carry a firearm -- I have them to carry AND my CCW -- but the political climate is a beast. If I think a given trip calls for a real firearm, I'll of course carry one. But if I'm only going out to walk the perimeter of my yard (.2km) for exercise, usually playing Pokemon Go as a sort of bribe to myself for going for a walk (yes, I'm old and I play Pokemon Go...sue me) and only really have to worry about the rare creepazoid that might try to assault me, a loose dog, or as is becoming more common these days, some sort of wild animal. They're out there, I can hear them, especially at night. We've got a fox den under our front porch -- I can hear them yiffing late at night (they're nocturnal) as this is mating season for foxes. We also get skunks and trash pandas, both of which are exceptionally susceptible to rabies, and foxes can get it, too. I think squirrels might be able to carry it, but then, squirrels can also carry Bubonic Plague, it's been detected in California and Colorado that I've heard of. They're both not to be taken lightly, as rabies and plague are NASTY ways to die that can be treated if caught early. So I carry something to deter human criminals, and to send any wild animal running, if not from getting hit, from the loud noise, or from the powder in the pepper balls. Those animal noses are a LOT more sensitive than our puny honkers. Considering that, being disabled from a car accident, I have to carry a low-recoil weapon in any case, the .50 ball is probably scarier to most animals than the .22 TCM 1911 I usually carry these days. (Yes, .22 caliber...but TCM is a centerfire round with around 2000 fps of muzzle velocity, and a fireball that is almost scarier than the massive BOOM the thing makes. But it's still only a .22 caliber projectile.) I wish I could take part in the kinds of fun simulated combat it sounds like you enjoy, but I can't. So I'll have to enjoy it vicariously through your videos! This was a good one!

    I got one of these a couple of weeks ago after seeing someone post about it on r/nerf and I was extremely disappointed with it. I don't have a chronograph but mine felt like it had sub-elite performance and the accuracy was basically non-existent. Some shots went fairly straight for maybe 20 feet but most of them ended up fish tailing out of the barrel. It was nowhere near the advertised 80 feet and 130fps. I contacted Umarex to RMA it but after spending $11 of my own money to ship back my lemon (or maybe they're all garbage?) I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
