Is China leading the electric vehicle race? | BBC News

China’s aggressive push into overseas markets with its own electric vehicles has sparked a backlash in the US and Europe.
Governments are looking to protect their domestic car makers. An anti-subsidy investigation is wrapping up in the coming weeks and a response from Brussels is expected.
But with annual sales of electric vehicles already above 30% of all cars in China, the mood there remains optimistic.

Elon Musk is not taking the bait? 🤭🤣😂

BYD has almost total vertical supply chain integration. That's why they can sell their cars way cheaper than anyone else. Subsidies, if anything, makes them more on equal footing with domestic brands after factoring tariffs. The west needs to face the fact that they can not compete in mass production and that it's only hope to remain competitive in a modern global market is to pursue new and innovative technologies. That is our comparative advantage and we would be wise to exploit that.

Electric car driving is a luxury experience, much quieter than ICE vehicles, and more convenient to own, with charging points in every house. The charging infrastructure outside of the home will mature in ~10 years, it’s ahead of its time, for now. I own a Chinese flashlight, and it’s very clear, even from this small product, with bidirectional charging, that the Chinese are at parity with the best in battery technology, if they haven’t already eclipsed the world in battery technology.

Every government gives subsidies to their key industries. Airbus, Boeing, US and EU governments give subsidies to EV and green tech industries as well, maybe not as much as China. But there is nothing wrong with subsidies in general. Compete by giving your local companies more subsidies, not protectionist tarrifs.

Tesla got subsidies from the Chinese government. VW and others are getting bilions in subsidies from the US, Canada and EU. In any case, the thing is that in China you can still by an entry level car. And the question should be why VW, GM and others can sell their cars in CHina much cheaper than in the US or EU? And as for EV's it is way more than 30% of Chinese sales now because there is the infrastructure to support it. You can charge inexpensively everywhere and instead of complaining if other countries want EVs they should invest in that as well

And only need to buy petrol when you go out of town a couple times a year. Perfect of both worlds and you don't need to worry about car inoperable when the battery degradation after many years as you still have a patrol engine which should last much longer because of its low usage.
