To your takeaway #2 - there are 10 universal 9.9 of ASM 300 but the 9.8 remains the collecting standard with prices still around $3K (with a huge census count of nearly 1600 universal). I don’t think the price of this book in 9.8 would be materially different if those 10 copies of 9.9 didn’t exist. Demand for the book is just too high. Most 9.8 buyers probably do not know that those 10 copies even exist.

The whole purpose of 3rd party grading is supposed to be consistency in grading, but by changing their own standard their legitimacy is called into question in the quest for them to encourage/trick their patrons into resubmitting 9.8s in the hopes of achieving higher, to maintain the submission levels they scaled up to.

This is very concerning with what this will potentially do to the modern comic book market. I think that it will have an effect on the market for modern books with high census counts (i.e. Ultimate Fallout #4, Batman Adventures #12, etc.). If the book has a low census count already and or it had a low print count I don't think it will matter as much as the book would already be rare and any 9.9's would be outliers. I guess it just depends on what books or eras of books you have put the most money into in how much this prescreen might affect the market for them.

9.9 pre-screens, and soon enough, 10.0 pre-screens? Is that where this road inevitably leads? If we as a community rally hard enough and tell CGC in a unified voice that we do not want this for our hobby's health, then maaaaaybe they'll resist the low-hanging fruit. Maybe. Maybe? I'll add this - the collectors who are mad about the 9.9 pre-screen, yet who are simultaneously eyeballing their slabs to see which ones they may want to submit for a bump to a 9.9 are part of the problem. You can't have it both ways. If you care about the long-term health of the hobby, and you're not pleased about the possibility of a 9.9 pre-screen, then you can't roll over and validate CGC's slimy schemes with your $.

The issue for me is the shifting grading standards. An old grade standard for a book with a subscription crease was max grade of 4.0, then CGC eased the standard up to 5.0. The 6.0 you showed had a grader notes of a subscription crease. I didn’t think a 6.0 was allowable with a subscription crease. Not a fan of ever shifting standards that always favor CGC’s revenue generating strategies.

So I've recently been thinking that my disappointment is not that CGC exists, it's that people were willing to leave it in the slab. Like I don't know how you would do it, but it should have been a situation where buyers would insist on being able to open it up. Maybe instead of encasing them, the process should have been that the book was sold, then it went to CGC who would validate the grade advertised, and then CGC would either send it to the buyer, or if they differed from the seller, then returned it to the seller and the buyer would get a refund. The notion that over time, that grade is going to be less and less valid, kinda leans into that - this should have always just been something to validate the sale, not a long-term thing.

Within the last year I stated grading books with CGC. I’ve submitted between 400 to 500 books so far. I recently had an order of flawless Copper Age books that all came back between 8.0 to 9.4. When asked, CGC conveniently didn’t have a single graders note for any of them. Is there a way to challenge CGC’s grade without paying to regrade. I look at these books in the case and I’m dumbfounded on how the “2 person” grading team came up with these grades.
