Is Buying Physical Media Worth It?

Hey everyone, in this video I talk about how I feel about collecting physical media and if I think it is still worth it. Share your thoughts about how you feel about collecting in the comments.

    I feel you, Eddie. What you’re describing is why the majority of my collection is previously seen titles. Most blind buys end up being one time watches for me. I’d rather watch something first (like The Witch) and then buying the physical media, knowing I want to rewatch it. It’s a mental shift but I think you will be happier. Your wallet will be too.

    We all have our reasons for collecting. And unless it becomes an addiction, or becomes a financial liability, it's as worthwhile or satisfying as any other hobby. That being said, space is definitely become an issue for me, and I've cut back on my collecting because of it. It's been tough, because it seems that recently the floodgates have opened at many of the boutique labels with new releases of older films I love! What is a collector to do; what is a collector to do! Thanks for posting this open and honest video! I'm sure many of us can relate.

    Good thoughts Eddie. I think part of the issue is how we change as we we mature with each passing year. With time, we tend to look more critical at our decisions, big and small. Collecting physical media is an amazing hobby in my humble opinion, as long as one applies some reasonable, healthy limits. I think the most important factor in this case is *rewatchability.* I've watched vast majority of movies in my collection more than once, and if re-visiting them once per couple of years feels nice, I know purchasing them was good decision 🙂

    I completely agree. I love collecting and like I said in the video I don’t think I’ll ever stop. But you are absolutely right, some limits should be set in place otherwise it becomes more hoarding and the “I need to collect everything” mentality. It’s easy to fall into that trap. Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it!

    I generally only buy movies I've seen and know I will want to watch again. I've done some blind buying, but it's usually a film from a director that I like or in some cases a random film that is recommended by a source that I trust. Life (and money) is too short to be buying movies that are just going to sit on a shelf. Good luck with your future collecting!

    I think there is a difference between a movie lover and a collector IMO. I am a movie lover that buys movies, so it's worth it. However, I try to be honest with rewatch ability for all movies before I buy. I try to find deals/sales and I rarely buy on release day unless it's something special. The movie packaging is not as important as the movie for me, so patience is key.

    Great video and topic Eddie! Always important to remember that we're all different and all collect in different ways that's unique us. And collect within your means and station in life. I buy a lot now, because I can afford to and fit it in my budget. 10 years ago in my 20s that was not the case. And my small bluray collection reflected that. Again, great video and thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    Yes!……..I have a huge collection of dvd’s and BluRays, however I’m much more discerning in what I choose to own now. In particular there are many old movies I’ve never watched and buying a physical copy is sometimes the only way…..streaming services are really quite limited in what they have on their books. Getting rid of movies you’ll never rewatch is a very sensible thing to do!

    I don't consider myself a collector as I don't buy them to collect, I just buy them to watch. So it's very easy for me to let go of something that I know I'll never watch again or something that I thought was just okay. That being said though I do like to go for the rarest versions of things, and things which have been signed by celebrities. And, I do find it cool to just sometimes look my collection.

    I completely understand this. What you want to do is specifically curate your collection to reflect you, and there's no guilt in doing that. We truly live in an unique time that it's possible to see a lot of movies in a lot of different ways. For years, my collection was about 300 titles, and I was happy with it. Now, it's approaching 2,800. And I've reached the point of not bringing in so much every week, but rather chipping away at and watching and enjoying what I have. We have to convince ourselves that watching what we buy, and finally being able to say that you've seen 100% of your collection, is just as fun and just as rewarding as going out and trying to collect it. I've been fortunate in a finance sense because the majority of my stuff is thrift/used/garage sale/(literally found 50 free disney titles on the street) - and I'm not kidding that I have a source for 50-cent titles. And that's a wonderful shopping experience, but it's not about how much I can buy - if I have 8 titles in my hand ($4), that gets pared down to 3 ($1.50) that "really belong" in the collection.

    When I buy DVDs I usually get the ones that aren't really on streaming, and when I mean streaming I mean on one of those free streaming apps or sites.. I refuse to pay or use Netflix, HBOMax, or whatever. Thats when I make a DVD purchase, especially when Im trying to see a directors/extended cut or uncensored version. Most of the time those cuts aren't available anywhere but only on DVD. I say its very worth it to still own and purchase a DVD, cause sometimes when you're trying to find that ONE movie you really want to watch its always a fucking hassle going from one platform to another, and eventually giving up. It's exhausting and very stupid. Owning a DVD makes life so much simple.. i miss blockbuster.

    great video! I totally agree! I recently have been buying up movies and tv shows on DVDs/Blu-rays that I know I'll rewatch several times in my lifetime. I have come across good deals on movies that I've bought before only because it is a good deal. Those 'good deal' movies usually end up getting sold or given away because I never watch those movies. Or I'll buy a movie I know is a good movie, but end up not watching it at all because I have other movies I want to watch more. I'm all for physical media as well, but totally agree that it should be tailored to the person's unique tastes and interests instead of relying on Fear Of Missing Out or only getting something because its on sale/good deal. Those psychological traps can cost us more money in the long run (and believe me, they definetly have for me).

    When I started I was focused on amassing a collection I bought movies I hadn't seen before and got some just because they were cheap. Now that I have two shelves full of movies I've moved to a new strategy. Every time I buy a new movie an old one has to come off of the shelf and either get sold or donated. I'm all about curation right now and I find that curating a shelf of movies and television I really love is much more fulfilling than just collecting. That's just me though.

  • @GyroFootlose
    @GyroFootlose Жыл бұрын

    I used to buy like that, the new buzzing movies, the last collector that you have to have, and all those movies that looked good on the shelves, but I just didn't watch them. Then, I just didn't have any more money, so I stopped buying physical media for almost a decade. Once I started to have a bit of money for that kind of buy, I decided to rebuild my collection from scratch on Blu-Ray, but I only buy the movies I honestly really love and rewatched. I don't buy movies I never saw before. I don't buy movies I liked but I know I just won't rewatch. I made a list of my favorite movies and I started tracking them down. Some were easy to find, others are less popular, or they just were never restored. I have almost 250 movies now, from the 1930s to the 2020s, and I don't buy a lot anymore. Sometimes I'm discovering new movies on TV or streaming that became instant favorites and I put them on my wishlist, and there are still movies that I can't find, like The Chaser that is out of print in my country for years now, or Sleuth that will finally be available in September! The thing is, I prioritized my personal taste and my viewing habits to keep my collection under control. I just can't deal with wasting money on things that I don't care about. I love my collection now. Now, I'm watching youtube videos of people buying movies left and right, it seems to bring joy to them, and it's good. It's another way to do it, we all collect the way we want, but I certainly understand what you're saying Eddie.

Differences I've made: - Only acquire 4K if I'll rewatch regularly e.g. a typical summer blockbuster or a classic such as JAWS 1975. - 4K disc must be 'Native 4K' ...i dont buy 'Upscales' - I never buy BD or 4K immediately at Full price, only exception is a 'Limited Edition'. - 90% of BDs I own are 'Used' costing an average $2-4. 'Elysium' and 'Creed 3' are great examples, would only buy 4K for $8-10 used, if at all. - The BD of Elysium here in UK is approx $1.20 used or $4 new..!!

    Hey Eddie, this is a great self-reflection video. Sometimes I struggle with this exact same scenario. I love collecting VHS Tapes, i've been collecting many formats of physical media for years, and now as I have gotten a little bit older I start to wonder is it worth to buy all these movies now when they're on streaming services. I also used to collect many steelbooks and now most of those are all on streaming and i watch them from there and most of my steelbooks, blu rays, and VHS tapes are just on my shelf and they just sit there. So i struggle sometimes on if to pull the movie off the shelf and watch it physically or just watch it through streaming. What would you do in that situation?

  • @jerryrpettus1926
    @jerryrpettus1926 Жыл бұрын

    Thank you. I've been having the same internal discussion with myself. Part of the reason I am slowing down buying more is that I am getting close to retirement. Which is better: cash in my bank account in case I need it, or a 4k on the shelf that will likely only lose value and won't be watched that often? As for blind buying, I qualify the movies I buy that I haven't seen, usually because of the director or screenwriter, or in the case of older films, the actors whose work is long gone. I admit that I haven't seen a lot of the disks I've bought, but at the same time, when I get a chance I try to watch them on a streaming service prior to buying, just so I get a feel for what I'm spending my money on.

    Having physical media is mostly about ownership. It actually isn’t about watching every disc you own at least once or twice. It’s about having it in case you need it. That’s the real reason to buy a disc. We spend most of our time watching things we haven’t seen. With so much content out there to watch on streaming, it’s hard to find time to watch our own physical media. I love most of my titles, but could probably cut out 10% to 15% of my titles and add better stuff. I don’t regret getting the really great films on 4K like the Godfather Trilogy, but Elysium is forgettable. I have it on Blu Ray but may never watch the movie again. There is a bit of regret with that film.

Rotate your streaming services 1 by 1. Keep it until you watch everything you're interested in then cancel & move on. By time you come back there should be something new. These 3 things has helped me keep a small collection 4k titles of movies I truly love & enjoy. I like Elysium is definitely a filler title. Same as Oblivion... love it, but I'm not gonna hunt it down for $20+ for them. Compare it to John Wick 1-3, Back to the Future Trilogy for $20-30 it's hard to justify spending money on a 4k release that is a filler title. Compare it Training Day with Denzel Washington - If I were gonna buy a single movie for $20 that would be it. Along with Ready Player One, Avatar, Joker, Ghost in the Shell, Beetlejuice... etc..

    Yep, I don't really buy new movies when they come out unless I know absolutely I'm going to want to watch it. Standard general release Blus/4Ks usually reach single digit prices in a year or so and I can wait. Of course boutique labels are the exception, but even then, they usually have sales from time to time.

    I collect physical media myself, everything from books, movies, video games,anime, manga, comics, music,tv series, board games, and toys. I try to buy things I know I'll reuse or already enjoy. I get rid of things that don't meet that criteria. I recent bought seven cds of touhou doujin music from some of my favorite artists.( most of which had songs I'd been listening to on youtube or mp3 files for years) I also recently bought items that were special to me from childhood like scooby doo where are you on blu ray, the complete rugrats series on dvd, and the 1970s Charlotte's web soundtrack on cd. Buy what you love after your bills and other pressing matters. Go through your collection and get rid of what you feel is unnecessary. Don't grab something just because its popular. It's good to think critically about why you collect what you do.

    I have largely kept to buying just the titles that i know I like. For example John Wick 4. Saw it in theater so had no issue buying the steelbook. Streaming is all well and good. But when it comes to my favorites i will always buy them on physical. LotR, Indiana Jones, 007, Back to the Future. I blind bought Valerian and Django Unchained steelbooks at $5 each. Physical is important to me because I like to support preservation of film. I cant buy everything so I buy the stuff I really like. Abbott and Costello season 1 restoration on blu ray for example. I may not always get around to watching a title right when I buy it. But...If its on the disc I have it and they cant remove it or alter it.

    There is a fine line between and obsession and a collection. In another 5 years I am certain that streaming will have caught up to Blu-Ray / 4K. At the moment there are issues with the contrast ratio but I remember 5 years ago any dark shadows used to pixalate. Before I buy any film I ask myself "Will I watch it more than once ?". There is no reason to buy modern hits. They will always be available on Streaming.

    Yup. I avoid buying new releases like the plague. The only thing that sucks is when Netflix puts out really good originals, but don't offer a physical version of it. Like the Queens gambit, I would pay money over fist just to have a physical copy because that show is just soo damn good. It's a shame that series will never get a physical release.

    This is always how I have collected. I only buy movies I know for sure I will want to watch more than once, a I can't trust that streaming services will always have them. They are always removing and replacing things. But this is also how I go about books, CDs, and pretty much everything else in my house. I don't like to spend money and have things taking up space and collecting dust that I'm not going to use on a regular basis or at least more than once. For me it's pointless and kind of causes anxiety. I need more space than stuff for my mental health.

    90% of movies I buy are classics. I think movies have gone to crap in the last 20 years. I love Criterion too. People ask me “why do you buy them? You can just stream”. Collecting films kinda represents what kind of person you are. If someone checks your library out and they see either Bladerunner or Star Trek Into Darkness, they can tell you have good taste or an idiot. You’re also supporting the film by purchasing it. I’ve bought 8 Blu-rays in the last month and a half. All classics I can watch again and again. And someday too… they might start censoring films like Disney did with French Connection. But I see your point

    Pretty much, there’s so much focus on repeating franchises at this point. But with the apparent superhero “burnout” and the not so great looking financial situation at movie studios now, something is eventually going to change. Streaming subscription costs are only going to go up to reach comparable costs to cable TV if you have multiple streaming services. Count on it.

    I used to be a collector of movies just like you. I probably had somewhere between 300-500 titles. What I came to realize was that I didn't watch them enough to justify such a collection. Some titles I may have watched once, and then not thought about watching them again for maybe 10 years, if at all. Now that I'm in my early 50's, I know that there a good chuck of titles that I probably will never watch again in my lifetime. So I sold everything (except my 4K Star Wars collection box set). For my all time favorite movies, I still have the UHD digital copies, and that's been good enough.

    Same here I'm in my late 20's. I use to have that many as well, but I sold them off. There's only a few that I wished I didn't sell because they're out of print & would cost a small fortune to buy back if I ever want to re-watch them again. I'm now collecting my favorite movies on 4k, but mostly franchise collections like Harry Potter, Matrix, Underworld, Resident Evil, Batman, LOTR & Hobbit. After than those I like buying Sci-Fi / Fantasy type movies are usually worth it for the visuals. I can't justify buying a comedy movie on 4k though.

    I've traded in my collection because I needed to get my finances in check, also realized that I don't have the time to watch all these movies. The only blu rays I kept are movies that I have a sentimental attachment to or rare animes that are hard to pirate or stream. It also dawned on me that I'm not special for collecting movies, no one cares other than me. Inflation is no joke now and I simply can't justify dropping $20 to $40 for the most expensive blu rays or standard blu rays. Buying dvds is cheap but the quality is a joke. I kept my digital codes but traded in the physical movie itself.

    The average person doesnt have very good insight or foresight, so this is why the companies with streaming sites got excited with the potential of streaming and why Disney chose to support Disney plus over the movie theatres. Lets be generous and say the company was able to sell 2 million copies of their movies in a year (considering how streaming has become more popular because of convience that's very generous no doubt) that would roughly be 20 dollars a movie. You've made 40 million dollars. Now while this selling model relies mostly on people chosing to go out and buy the movie, the subscription model forces you in a sense to buy 12 movies a year with the average subscription being around 20 dollars or slightly less. That is 240 dollars at the end of the year for one person who might not have bought that many physical movies. The real kicker is when you add that to 2 million subscribers. You might have made 40 million on physical media but with 2 million subs paying 240 a year, you make 480 million. If you have 5 million subs then it's 1.2 billion. So this is why companies want the subscription model over physical media. However there can be a problem keeping that many people to your service. People can consume your content faster because its instantly available and already paid for and that leads to constantly needing new content that people want to watch. If people stop wanting to watch your content then it can lead to those sub numbers slipping too far. Movies and other content that don't sell will just begin to devalue the platform and having no good content to watch will turn people off from the service. At which point they may leave and not return for some time, eithter finding something new or just doing something else. On the flip side, the digital content is not good for consumers, yes it maybe more convienent but companies cant be trusted to have your best interest at heart. On top of that no digital service can last forever. Companies go under and rights shift all the time. So your favorite movie wont be available eith on the platform one day or any.

    I get the fantasy. The fantasy is to have all the discs. But the reality is, if you're haul every week is costing you $100+, you're spending more every month than the streaming service prices. Some of the best Criterion's can run you close to $100 for one film. The other day, my LOTR Fellowship Disc 1 of the Extended Edition didn't even read in my PS5. Couldn't believe it. With these kind of problems with physical media, you gotta buy movies you love. I respect that decision, man. I couldn't believe when you said you had already purchased Creed 2 (which IMHO is no where near as quality as Creed), but hadn't seen them. That stings.

  • @stonesfan285

    Yup I wasn't quite at the $100+/week point, but I took a step back and asked myself how many times am I really going to watch x movie? I had 7 336-disc binders filled with Blu-rays and DVDs. I ripped all these to a large HDD and stream them off of Plex. It's way easier than digging a disc out of a binder. I stored all my discs away now in the basement. I just think for me, there is less and less than I am interested in watching more than one time, so it makes more sense to just rent it digitally on Apple or Vudu. And if it's something I think I am really going to watch more than a few times, I'll wait a few weeks and I can often get it for $5-10 digitally. Plus I can share that digital collection with my parents who live a few states away if they want to watch something I have. That is until Vudu and Apple start cracking down on account sharing.

    Nothing wrong with collecting physical copies of your favorite media (especially in this day and age). The problem is obsessing over it. It’s much like gun enthusiasts. They buy up ammo literally by the TONS (on a pallet), 100,000’s of rounds. Just because they think it might stop being available. Then we go into a firearm recession like were are only just now starting to trickle out of in the last 3.5 years. Physical media collectors that are in that realm have those rooms, filled to the ceiling with literally 10,000+ movies, games, etc. THEY ARE NEVER going to watch even 75% of those, EVER. So, at that point it’s just a flex scenario and they look like manchildren. I have just started to get into collecting DVD’s and Blu-rays in the last year. I ONLY purchase movies that 1.) I will watch again, guaranteed 2.) Are a significant movie as far as writing, directing and quality are concerned. I pass up so many movies at thrift shops that a collecting addict would have a full blown OCD panic over. I will look through shelves of literally 1,000+ movies in a store and will walk away with MAYBE 5-10 movies. My collection is maybe 300+ movies currently. I really doubt that it will ever get up to 1,000 movies, etc. P.S. Blind buying is a fun option when it looks interesting.

  • @stonesfan285

    @stonesfan285

    Ай бұрын

    Yeah that annoys the hell out of me. Who needs hundreds of thousands of rounds? Even people who shoot competitively shoot maybe 10,000 rounds in a year and that's still a lot imo. Those people are also usually loading their own ammo, not buying it at a store. Then the companies start price gouging and you start getting where 9mm is $1 per round. Plus if it's a SHTF scenario, you're not going to be lugging that much ammo around. But yeah I have way too many movies and alot of stuff I probably won't watch again more than a couple times. I ripped it all to Plex now and just stream it. Less and less coming out I am interested in watching beyond one time so rentals digitally are easier. And if I want to own it, I can always wait for a sale. If you give it a couple weeks, a lot of stuff comes down to $4.99 or $9.99. And it's 4K HDR.

    My advice is don't buy anything else until you've gone through everything you have already paid for. Then only get stuff you know you're going to rewatch. Be prepared to sell stuff you don't end up liking. But these guys with 3000 movies, just realise it would take nearly ten years to get through the whole collection even if they watched one movie a day. And that's once. So instead aim for 100 movies that you love. And see how often you actually watch them.

Secondly, I feel bad for you that you need a separate room for your movies. IMO movies belong in the living room for everyone to enjoy together. And they can get more use.
