Is Bo'ness railway museum better than York?

We visited Scottish National Railway Museum in Bo'ness and was very surprised how good it is comparing to National Railway Museum in York.

being a volunteer at this railway, i would say i like both the museum here and the one in york, at Bo'ness you can see lots of things going on, even getting a train ride too, although while in york everything is static exhibit only with the exception of the Flying Scotsman but is still amazing

Don't get me wrong. I like the York museum. But it's too static. No life. I will defo do a video from NRM for comparison at some point

@@beardguysadventures Prior to all the work, the musuem did offer steam rides, you could go in the rocket aswell, but with all the work, so much as been shut off for such a long period, the musuem does feel pretty lifeless now, just hope when it opens up a bit more life is brought back

The biggest problem with the National railway musuem currently, is that they have decided to do everything all at once, resulting in there just being like 2 rooms with things to see, if they just decided to do each part 1 by 1 it would of been a different story, im just dreading what is going to happen to the station hall because i loved that section, i just hope it remains

The B&KR is a far more hands-on railway, where you can physically feel and enter just about everything in it. It’s far more practical than the NRM, which has now sacrificed the station exhibit for a shitty “science of railways” gallery intended for toddlers. Bo’ness is more geared towards people who have a genuine interest in railways, rather than trying to just get more visitors like the NRM is doing. As someone who volunteers there for stewarding trains and maintenance, it’s lovely to see it all being cared for by people with passion, rather and minimum-wage workers.

NRM have done away with the workshop and viewing gallery and replaced with some arty farty gallery thats not wanted, this railway have added a workshop gallery that everyone wants so well done to them, tut tut NRM when will you listed to what the rail enthusiasts want, was filming the new build P2 a couple of weeks ago at A1 Steam Locomotive Trust in Darlington (they also built Tornado) and they are going to add a viewing gallery over their workshop too.

The NRM once did turntable demonstrations, had a working winding engine, let you go in the cabs and carriages, and ran live steam rides in the south yard. As far as I know, they don’t do any of that anymore, although there are other rail related places that do all that. Not to mention how many exhibits York has given away; not just one or two, but at least over 70 to 100. The museum’s a bit bare these days, but hopefully it’ll improve.

3:14 - The reason the turntable is this size is so it could simply accommodate wagons.

just like with it's narrow gauge varients, this turntable would most likely have been used to turn wagons so they could be shunted onto to seperate tracks

80105 Standard 4 Tank in the bid steam shed is a work in progress, not an exhibit. If you came back now you would see the boiler back in the frames. You can see the fitting of the ashpan, and the lift and fit. Us old guys are out on Tuesdays and Saturdays, another group of volunteers are out on a Wednesday. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pod9k5aJptPMlLQ.html

There's not much the NRM can do for they don't have any demonstration line so there can't be working steam. With the benefit of hindsight it would have been far better if the NRM had been situated on a closed branch line then they could have the museum and trains running. At one stage it looked like a proper loco depot having been North York Shed but now it's just looks like a convention centre or a modern front on an industrial unit. There's no steam shed atmosphere to the NRM it's just a bunch of lifeless exhibits.

@@beardguysadventures if you could only save one though, out of all heritage lines in the world. Tanfield is the most realistic and authentic slice of Victorian railways. The rest are great but have been swallowed up by commercialism. Too shiny and focused on mainline celebrity locos which look silly only going 25mph on branch lines. Not many provide an authentic experience. It’s my opinion but it’s the correct one
