Is Being An Introvert Impossible in Fashion?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The fashion industry is known for extroverted, social people at extremely luxurious parties. Are introverts able to be a part of fashion if they don't enjoy doing that? Who is my favorite high fashion female menswear designer who shows at a major fashion week (New York, London, Milan & Paris)? How am I supposed to start in fashion as a 16 year old, should I go to fashion school or take a good fashion course? All this and more on today's questions video.

I work in fashion design and I’m introverted, I found as easy at it was for me to land very coveted entry position in global brands, extremely hard to grow out of that entry position. There is a game happening in the fashion industry where once you make it in you just need to talk your way up. And I do find it frustrating as I seen many people without competence going up due to their friends instead of hightly skilled people it’s happen all the time.

9:40 As someone who works in a “dream job” industry and has a couple of young family members who are about to enter and/or graduate from university, here’s what I say to them: if you don’t have access to the people who you see as industry mentors, at least start cultivating the working habits of the world that you’re looking to work in. 99% of the work I get is because people want to work with me. Key words here being “want” and “work”.

Currently in college for fashion design. This is all what I’ve learned in school and through networking. You can absolutely be an introvert and be in fashion. There are even jobs that can be done remote, although they are often not the most creative. To be frank, unless you are the creative director of a brand, most fashion jobs aren’t that creatively driven. If you are newer to the fashion industry or want to find a career in it, a great set of skills to get yourself into the door of the DESIGN world is learning Excel Spreadsheets and Adobe Illustrator. People make pretty decent money because brands and creative directors outsource work to people who can make tech-packs with Adobe Illustrator or crunch numbers in Excel. I’m not saying it’s the end all be all, but knowing those two programs is EXTREMELY helpful in the industry.

Why would it be impossible for an introvert to be able to take part in the world of fashion? I'm an extreme introvert, to the point of an INFJ on Myers Brigg, but I still have to play a part in life. As far as showing up to every shindig going on in fashion to further my career... yeah, that would be a tough one, but every introvert knows how to cut corners, do what they have to do to get it done with minimal pain. Isn't Hedi Slimane an introvert? He managed to succeed.

@@BlissFoster Yes! I absolutely DO need to just sit, and for a long while, convincing myself that I HAVE to go, I can't skip the event. Attending any event sucks all the energy out of me. Just the act of getting ready for an event drains me. It is so bad that I will not do ANYTHING before said event, nothing, no shopping, no errands, no visit with friends earlier in the day. I have to devote all my energy into attending that days event. Just hang out at home, nap, read, watch Bliss Foster vids, etc. I also need to do as much as I can the day before, such as wash my hair the night before. Any sort of preparation that can be done the day before, will be done the day before said event.

When we talk about work in fashion or careers in fashion, we need to remember that there are hundreds, perhaps even thousands of job descriptions, which aren't model or designer! There are cutters and ateliers and artisans and economists, creative and consultants, buyers, advertising specialists, etc. If you think you might want a career in fashion, find out which of these best suits your personal needs. We can't all be models or designers, and we wouldn't have models and designers without the amazing teams behind the scenes.

I just want to say that being an introvert doesn’t stop you from working on your social skills and doesn’t stop you from being able to act like an extrovert sometimes. I went to living my life alone speaking so little i couldn’t even talk properly and not being able to stay 30 sec in a room with people in it; to being able to casually talk to anyone on the street, being able to speak to a room of full of people and making friends easier than most extrovert. I didn’t change im still an introvert, but social relationships is a skill that can be worked on and mastered, and few people actually work on that especially extrovert who thinks they have that skill naturally and thus don’t work on it. Introvert means that you tend to recharge you batteries while being alone, it’s not a burden or a handicap

I am going to do some hottaking;; I don't think the classification of extravert/introvert is useful in any way as an individual without considering the context in which they are currently in. With context I mean in what social context you exist. With the right people I can be either an "introvert" or "extravert" and I have a hard time understanding it to be any different for other people, especially reading the comments here . I think it makes sense for a company/job context because people won't have a choice within this context; you have the job and you're not going to leave. What I mean is that if you want to leave that's besides the point; my point is that the company cannot assume people want to leave all the time. This means that they need to work with what they got and that's why some companies do personality testing to see how to work with the people that are part of the company. Usually this involves defining people as either introvert or extravert because that gives them some framework to maybe improve how to deal with what people identify as. For example if you have an employee that is considered to be an introvert maybe write a message before calling them. I am rambling a bit but I hope my point makes sense? Maybe I haven't met ''real'' extraverts. Every person I know that I would've considered extravert also becomes tired after interacting with people. I've both lost and gained energy by talking with people I either liked to spend time with or haven't liked to spend time with.

I look at it like any industry, there are people in the scene and there are people behind the scenes. A huge amount of fashion (most of it) takes place behind the scenes and it’s an ideal creative or business environment for any introvert to thrive. The extroversion on the exterior is intimidating, but no one should let that fool them into thinking that’s how it works.

Virgil having an architecture background, in architecture school we are taught that unlike art or other artistic fields you have to have a reason for any proposed design element. Just like in fashion with references. Tho you have to be more subtle about it in architecture because your clients don’t care what your referencing because its for their own personal use and unlikely that they’ll be talking about those references to their guests. It’s nice for us architecture people who see it in works tho.

The introvert question is more about marketing yourself. As an introvert how are you doing that? Since you don’t find peace in talking to a lot of people. Sharing Virgil’s background in architecture, he gets praise from me because I def see the architecture conversations happening in his work. The only design form that is all encompassing, like architecture, where you have to create a “world” within the parameters of physical materials is fashion. At the time he was hot in the fashion scene there were so many imitators that were def only copying superficial elements. I finally pulled the trigger on LV when I was on a trip to Paris and I don’t think I would’ve done that if it wasn’t for Virgil. Also I got out of the architecture industry because it wasn’t for me. Don’t get me wrong I love architecture and it’s the reason I do photography and travel but doing it is a whole different story. Doing it for a firm is where I was at my breaking point and switched to another design field. Which knowing architecture def helped me. Not to say I would go back voluntarily but I would do it on my own terms. That field has terrible working hours for the amount you get paid. Also fairly toxic attitudes towards professional “loyalty.” Glad I left it because I only appreciate architecture more.
