I graduated in 1990 when pharmacy school was 2 years of pre-pharmacy and 4 years of pharmacy school for a total of 6 years. Now schools are so competitive that most applicants have a 4-year undergrad, then 4 years of pharmacy school and 1 year of residency and perhaps a 1 year fellowship. That is 10 years of school, you might has well be a medical doctor.

I’ve been a pharmacist for 40 years. It’s changed a lot. Used to be you could work just about anywhere with little effort. I’ve worked in large university based hospitals ( right out of school) then many years in retail, long term care facility (nursing home), IV admixture, and finally research ( setting up clinical drug trials). You can’t do that anymore. Everything is highly specialized and hospitals won’t even consider you without significant experience or a residency. It’s very discouraging. I’m just glad I did it when I did ( 40 years ago). I went to a pharmacy school at a large public university back when state universities where heavily subsidized with state a federal money. My tuition was $750 per semester ( not per credit hour). I finished with $6k in debt which I paid off in 5 years. I would definitely think twice about a career in pharmacy in today’s environment. Better off going to medical school or pursuing a PhD in pharmacology or physical sciences.

I'd highly suggest to try and do the equivalency test if possible. Pharmacy school in general is supposed to get a student equipped to pass the NAPLEX and the associated law exam. In addition, being a foreign graduate you will also have to pass the English language test (TOEFL). If you can do so with the education you have already obtained then you will save a lot of time and $. You can refer to the specific state board of pharmacy website in which you plan to reside to get the full eligibility and requirements information.

MTM in retail is a joke. The compensation for it does not justify the time it takes and corporate does not give you enough time to do it properly as you are always grossly understaffed. A lot of it is more for the benefit of the insurance company rather than the patient. I can't do MTM properly if I'm stuck at the register and drive-thru and having to do a million ingratiating chit chat calls to see if Johnny's ear ache is better.

Like you highlighted though, most people and pharmacists only see retail as an option, when that's just not the truth any longer. The industry of pharmacy is shifting and naturally, jobs in retail will decrease, but that doesn't mean a career in pharmacy isn't worth it anymore. I agree, retail is going down, but that's exactly my point. It will and should go down; automation hits every industry and pharmacy isn't any different. But in our modern times, we have so many opportunities as pharmacists that most people fail to see and identify. A pharmacist/PharmD no longer means only a retail pharmacy

This seems to be out of date. Don’t be a pharmacist, you will likely end up in retail (absolutely awful), unless you think you can get into clinical rotations (extremely competitive, way more pharmacists then rotations). Retail pharmacists gets to leave there work when they go home? Not true. There are too many pharmacy students, it is too competitive. You will be lucky to even get a retail job at the minimum, and they are treated terribly with about 80k starting pay (unless you happen to be in the few high demand areas, be sure to look where they are). These poor students are being told this is still a good job, wasting years of their lives, 100k of student debt, just to work in a terrible environment. It will not become better until it is a pharmacists market again, if it ever does, and these videos don’t help. Talk to someone new to retail, if you are considering being a pharmacist. It’s likely where you will end up, and they can tell you how it really is today; and what it is looking like.

Don’t wait, doesn’t matter what career choice you take. You’d be a fool not to. 2) She also lost me at, “pay gap” since pharmacy is overwhelmingly female dominated and I’d love for her to show any stats on this. 3) The growth outlook for the next 5-10 years is NEGATIVE (3% to 5%) and is being overloaded by low talent new grads churned out by diploma mills. CA has 13+ schools alone. 13+! Talent pool dilution to the max!!! 4) Lowered standards for schools and many students require multiple attempts to take the board exams and pass them, it’s sad. Pick a top school, and if you don’t get in don’t settle. 5) don’t do anything in healthcare because it may have good pay. That’s the WORST reason to go into a career. This is terrible advice.
