Is Atelier Ryza 2 Any Good Though?
After enjoying the first game so much, it was near on guaranteed that I would play it's sequel. But just because the antecedent was good, it doesn't assure that Atelier Ryza 2 will also be good.
Trying to figure out if you should play Atelier Ryza 2?
Well let's dive in, and see if we can answer that question 'Is Atelier Ryza 2 Any Good Though?'
Last year I was fortunate to play the first Atelier Ryza game, and loved it. It was a unique experience that I felt I wouldn't get with any other JRPG, with it's focus being something that is normally overlooked in many other titles.
With an intricate crafting system which tied in well to progression in the story, this became one of the most relaxing adventures I had all year, and it more than earned it's place as one of my favourite games of 2020.
Naturally when I heard it was getting a sequel so soon after, I made a beeline for the pre-order, and even got myself the limited edition of Atelier Ryza 2.
47 hours later, I feel happy to give my opinion to you, which might potentially give you the answers you need on Atelier Ryza 2.
Hope you enjoy it!

Really enjoyed the crafting & battle mechanics of the first Ryza & the changes in the second make it feel refreshing. Seasoned gamers may want to play on hard. On normal I never reached tactics levels higher than 3. The battles would be over too quickly.

I played it on the highest difficulty available at the time (there's a 'charismatic' difficulty once you beat the game, so didn't get to play with this), and I had a decent enough challenge. Keeping the characters in line with the enemy curve is key.

I'm absolutely blown away by how much of an improvement Ryza 2 was over 1. I had some issues with Ryza 1 (particularly the plot), but all my concerns were set aside as soon as I played as little as an hour of Ryza 2.

I picked up the Atelier Ryza games because I needed something to tide me over until CS4 came out for PC, and I gotta say I agree with you 100% that the second one is an improvement on almost everything. I especially liked that the tactics level and core count went up based upon the skills you used this time, which encouraged the use of skills rather than saving the AP for getting to a higher tactics level like in the first one.

I think what surprised me most is that it trumped one of my favourite games of last year in nearly every aspect. They just took everything that was good about the first and polished it up even more. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the final game in the (supposed) trilogy.

With Ryza 3 announced I went back and watched your two videos on both these games like you I haven't played any in the series, but I've been intrigued. The idea of a more wholesome JRPG where you're not dealing with some major epic threat traditionally didn't seem like my cup of tea, so I never really went further into looking into the series but I've started to think it might be a nice change of pace to the usual "grand epic", your comments and excitement on the games got me more interested so I'm thinking maybe I will give these a go. Thanks!

I think that's the issue, Koei never really drops the price of their releases. Falcom games for example you'll see on sale consistently, but Koei have full control as far as I'm aware, and the price remains relatively similar even a year on. I will say it's worth the money, but I understand others waiting for the price reduction.

The game really does improve and almost every aspect compared to Ryza 1... but it messed up, by that I mean the pacing. It should NOT be possible to make end game items before finishing the 2nd ruin, yet it is. There SHOULDN'T be so many quests and side stories open before finishing the 2nd ruin since its the main story. Crafting, side-stories etc should go hand in hand with the main story, yet it doesn't which makes the main story bosses a breeze to fight through. And this inevitably makes this game weaker than Ryza 1, though it literally improves on every other point... pacing of the game is quite important, isn't it.

Meh, Klein are besically your usual shonen anime protagonist that's loved by every girl while Felt feels like a Gary Stu with the whole choosen one thing, I'll pick Viese over both of them as a better protagonist any day (though, I'll agree that Gray's a cool character). I hope the series never returns to those games ever again tbh, there's a good reason why those games are extremely unpopular among the Japanese fanbase & it's better off for Gust to focus on a new project instead of touching their dead games to please a small amount of people that happens to hate most of their recent games. Also, it's funny that you called every game after those 2 fanservice-y when Iris 1 shows 15 years old girl (Lita) in her undergarment while Iris 2 did the same thing with a 13 years old girl (Fee), most of the fanservice in modern Atelier games are optional DLC, nostalgia are one hell of a powerfull drug I'll tell ya.

Their whole idea of puzzle is asking the player to put the square block into a square hole etc, I was so done towards the end. Combat is ok I guess but gets pretty repetitive unless it's a boss fight. Alchemy system is good compared to other games, but nowhere as good as the Mysterious series.
