I own both and my swatches are very comparable, being much more similar in hue than what I'm seeing here. The sample you were sent seems a bit red-leaning. Your video got me thinking about what is actually happening with the color separation, and I realized that it's also happening inside the tube of paint. Older tubes of Moonglow are far more likely to have had the pr177 red separate out from the heavier pigments over time. Unless the person who owned the tube was constantly remixing it by kneading/stirring with a toothpick over time, the color will change each time a sample is taken from the tube. I just compared the pan version, dot card version, tube version and old tube not stirred to verify this. I don't mean any harm in sharing this, but as a pigment enthusiast I thought you might appreciate knowing this issue. I'll put some images on my pigment database site later if you'd like to see my results I'll reply with a link once it's posted. Please know that I love your videos and appreciate your efforts and detective work and I'm equally inquisitive about paint properties :) I also wanted to apologize if I was one of the people who made you feel bad somehow about not knowing this was a "dupe". I only meant that in fairness of popular pigment combinations, and like a store brand version of oreos, of course each brand has it's own ingredient sources - but they are in essence meant to be a very similar product. I'm definitely OK with multiple brands using the same mixtures, however I'm a bit bothered by the max lightfast ratings they noted for these even though PR177 is known to have issues in tints/diluted. I love this platform for sharing our experiences with pigments, so please know that I never intend to be hurtful :)

That's an interesting point, Kimberly--paints with a mix of different weight pigments are going to have variations throughout. That's what I love about DS granulating paints--the unpredictability of the colors on the page (a watercolor artist can always use phthalos, quinacridones, and many other pigments for more predictable results). It's one of the fun things about watercolor :)

@@everartokelli Definitely one of the coolest things about watercolor! Moonglow, Shadow Violet and Imperial Purple were some of my very first purchases and what got me so hooked on playing with color separating mixtures. I realized I had some Moonglow left in an old tube and what came out was almost pure Anthra Red, with the Ultra and Viridian starting to harden below it. It makes me want to play with alternate mixtures, maybe create my own dupe with a more stable red like PR122 or a PV19 :D

No worries!! I really just felt like that because I had SO MANY people tell me that, but absolutely no one was rude about it. I really just felt silly that I didn't know at all! I truly appreciate everyone who is willing to share their knowledge and experience! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about your own findings with this color, and I look forward to seeing your own personal swatches! I've noticed there definitely seems to be a bit of a divide between those who have had a similar experience as me when comparing the two, and others who see little to no difference. I guess it just adds to the mystery of this beautiful color. I personally hope that I continue to get a red leaning color because I think the one I have is stunning! I would honestly be sad if I didn't get these results again. I guess I'll just have to post an update after I replace this tube :)

On another tutorial that I watched the author was saying that it also depends hugely on what paper you use. So I tried Moonglo and a version that I made myself of the moon glow on different papers and it is true. The cellulose and cotton blend papers were a different reaction from Moonglo then 100% cotton. Just thought you might enjoy that bit of info. Thank you for a great tutorial very in-depth and useful

On the screen, visually Artemis looks a lot like DS shadow violet.

This was a neat comparison, thank you. I would note that even if Artemis is/was intended to be a "dupe" there is nothing wrong with that since the company would have reverse engineered it and made it their own. To me, when it comes to paints I expect companies to have almost identical colors so we can choose between the company & quality of paints vs being "stuck" with something from a brand we don't like. Not to say I don't like DS since I have not yet branched out to it, but I appreciate DV expanding their collection from more standard colors to experimental ones since for me the price is better.

I have both. They are different 😊 i love both. DS and DV are my two favourite brands!

You may not be wrong, there is a tendency for these paints to separate in the tube and unless carefully re-mixed/stirred/kneaded it can look like a different color each time you pour out new paint. I noticed that her sample looked notably more red than mine too, and comparing the two brands in person I see very little difference.

I swatched them again, and they are still almost exactly the same. Slightly more pronounced granulation with my moon glow, but I see just as much red in both of them. My Artemis is not nearly as gray as yours is in the video.

Looks like the lightfast 'moonglow' dupe mix I made is actually almost identical to Artimis! LOL. Interesting video, thanks. I may have to try another moonglow mix dupe attempting to get closer to moonglow itself and relabel my moonglow mix dupe as Artimis dupe.

Thanks so much for doing such an amazingly detailed comparison--it's always fun to see what watercolors do what :) and you had a thoughtful review of both. No paint company can make an "identical" copy of someone else's paint even using the same pigments. In this case it was an attempt to come close to that paint (by the fact that they made American Journey's paint called Moonglow), but doubtful that Da Vinci thought they would make the same formulation, rather that they'd give Cheap Joe's and Da Vinci's customers a viable option. Same with Roman Szmal's similar multicolor paints. It was inevitable that companies would make their own version of a popular paint. I've loved Daniel Smith for 20 years now, I live in Seattle, so appreciate their products, their retail store, the events and classes they hold and the amazing staff who are always helpful and inspiring--and I love supporting local small businesses. But I'm fine with other companies adding similar paints--every artist has different needs and styles that work with different paints, so the more options the better. I have a couple of tubes of DS Moonglow, so probably won't be buying Artemis anytime soon, but would love to try it sometime.

Oh my goodness, I would LOVE to see one of their stores!! 😍 I really love these colors for their differences! The flow is different, the granulation presents itself differently, and the pigments seem to be weighted differently, all creating a completely different experience. I can honestly say I would like to keep both in my collection, and I love them both differently and equally.

I never knew that colours with such profound colour seperarion and heavily granulating ones until, well, a few days ago ^^' I'm nowhere near being a watercolour artist, it's moreof one of the media I like dabbling around with, I still use my 12pan Pelikan watercolour box and some Van Gogh pocket boxes and until I stumbled across these speciality colours and saw more videos about granulation, mixes and stuff I never thought I needed more colours than fit into a 12 pan set ^^' I saw some other videos by Kimberly Crick in which she both swatches and mixes moonglow and moonglow dupes and she mentioned that you really need to stir up the colours in the tubes (like with a toothpick or something akin), because the pigments tend to separate in there and kneading doesn't seem to be enough to mix them back up, so maybe that's why some noticed here that your sample seemed redder? She also mixed her own custom moonglow dupes with pigments that are lightfaster than those used in the original ones, which I found really really interesting to watch. BTW love the way your swatches here look 🥰. You can just print them and or hang them straight up on the wall. Those would look so well in a minimalistic, modern setting :)

I know there seems to be some debate about Moonglow, and I am familiar with Kimberly’s thoughts on it. I have taken her thoughts and theories to heart in further researching Moonglow since the publishing of this video. I take a lot of pride in giving the most accurate information that I can, and try to give clear note of my own biases that may occur from my personal style, as it is my hope to help other artists make the most informed decisions that best suit their needs and style. That being said, I’m more than willing to go back to a subject when someone believes I have misrepresented something, or have in some way drawn the wrong conclusion. My original video(s) on these color(s) are the result of several weeks of work, extensive comparison notes, and personal research. I made the comparisons of my samples in an impartial way, and I did my best to thoroughly explain the nuances of each color in every test completed. I understand that my original notes were questioned due to the unknown nature of the sample of Moonglow (although I would like to mention that Tanya has since taken the time to detail her storage, usage, and thoughts on this tube prior to sending it to me, which can be found in the comments of this video). In my additional research since this video I have acquired a new sample of Moonglow for comparison, which was thoroughly mixed before completing a second run of tests and comparisons. I have also done extensive external (online) research to better understand Moonglow, and to acquire more points of reference in the overall color of Moonglow that are not my own. As a result of this further research, I have determined that I stand by my original conclusions and comparisons of Moonglow, and how it differs from Artemis. I have found my comparisons to be overall the same, and I have found dozens of red leaning samples online. This includes Daniel Smith’s own description and swatches showing this color to be more of a red leaning (“violet” by description) color. I hope this clears up any confusion, and if you are interested in trying Moonglow for yourself I encourage you to look up some of these other color samples from websites, blogs, forums, and social media to draw your own conclusion!

@@AmandaWiley No confusion on my side and if there ever was any, you definitely cleared it :) Icjust saw that comment pop up under the video and had recently watched Kinberly's video about it, so that's where that comment came from ^^ So definitely big thanks for your answer above 🤗 I definitely like the colour and am considering adding it to my palette at some point, it.goes so well with the muted colours and grayscale that I love so much 😊

Is mijello shadow violwt as same as neutral tint?

well, they are basically the same thing... a purple-grey that separate into blue, green and red... the differ you find in each paint is just basically the ratio differ that each company uses... you can also mix this color yourself, all you need is ultramarine blue (PB29), viridian (PG18) and a red of your choice.. just tweak the ratio between those 3 color to get a version that you like.. if you dont like viridian, you can also replace it with cobalt green (PG50) or for a less saturated version, replace the red with Potter's Pink (PR233)

I purposely reviewed them side-by-side because of their similarities, all of which are noted in the video. It’s to help people see them both, to see how they vary and differ, and to see if it’s worth having both (or either) in their collection.

Viridian Ultramarine and Anthraquinone red seem to be the same compare cost weight for weight and you might get an idea of relative amounts of pigment nob

It is a beautiful mix and I not all artists worry about lightfastness but the lightfastness is not really a true I. 2 of the pigments of Moonglow are fugitive. Try an experiment to verify my results. I use French ultramarine, Viridian and quin coral or even a DS alizarin crimson and now the mix would be completely lightfast whether Artemis or Moonglow. It is completely misleading that companies exaggerate their lightfastness. It is always a good idea if it is of concern to verify the pigments on an independent accurate pigment chart.

The PR177 in both of these is not lightfast. Overtime, the purple color fades to a dull grayish color. Search for a KZread video on this. I mix my own using a lightfast red.

I have a feeling that DS has colour variation from batch to batch especially those "special mix" colours and primatek. Example1. A youtuber said the paint she get from a DS dot card has diffrent shade comparing to the tube she bought. 2. My Moonglow also looks more grey and less red comparing to yours. But I have never used Da Vinci. So cannot comment🙂

I have a brave guess about the cause: Those bigger particles in a paint are not evenly distributed because they are more likely to sink. Hence, when we use the paint, the ratio of different pigment variate. Hence, the colour looks different.

Sadly, it turns out that both of these beautiful paints are not lightfast.

Ooohhh, that is a good question! I've American Journey is part of Da Vinci, so I would be curious to know how it holds up against both of them.

My Moonglow loyalist heart winced at each critique you make and when it seems like Artemis is being pushed as the better one. But I love the thorough review and tests. I'm now subscribed 😁

I think one cannot replace the other, and that each one is truly beautiful and unique in its own way! @@ChristinaTodd1970 I mix my own Moonglow color, substituting Quinacridone Rose for Anthraquinone Red since the Rose is more permanent. I found that the amount of Viridian added makes the difference in the gray hue. The less Viridian added the more purple the paint. The granulation is about the same as the Moonglow from the tube.
