Carol, yours is one of the best reactions I've seen. I saw this great film when it was first released in theaters (after seeing the original Alien in 1979) and I've been a huge fan ever since. Just one thing: The colonists were studying specimens only after their encounter with the species subsequent to a colonist discovering the derelict ship and being attacked by a face hugger. But I really enjoy your reactions and your analysis of the film. You get it! 😊❤❤

Then about 3 weeks ago we "lost contact" with this colony. That is when the aliens started attacking the colony and that is also the first time the colonists started studying the things that were trying to kill them. You know - study th enemy to learn how to defeat them.

14:12 "Isn't this Reece from Terminator? Is he cast here because James Cameron likes him?" Yes. James Cameron uses a lot of actors in more than one movie. Michael Biehn was Hicks here, Reece in Terminator, and Coffee in The Abyss. Lance Henriksen who plays Bishop was also in Terminator. Bill Paxton who plays Hudson is also in Titanic and True Lies and has a very small part in Terminator. Jenette Goldstein who plays Vasquez is also in Terminator 2 and Titanic (fairly small roles, but she's there and has lines to speak). Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Terminators and in True Lies.

  • @weldonwin

Also, Michael Biehn wasn't originally cast to play Hicks. Originally, the part went to character actor James Remar, but he was fired from the movie shortly into filming when he was arrested on drug offences. Biehn was cast quickly to replace him, since Cameron had worked with him before and inherited Remar's customised Marine gear (All the actors got to personalise their armour). There is in fact one shot of Remar in the movie as Hicks, when the Marines are heading into the alien nest and we see them from behind at the entrance.

Seriously, if you went to work tomorrow, and some hysterical stranger you didn't even know came into your workplace, or home, or whatever, talking about how she fought a dragon that breathes fire and ate a few of her friends and then she shot it in the belly button and it shrank down, down, down, smaller and smaller until Poof! Gone. Disappeared. There is no evidence, nobody saw it, no recording - but her friends are missing and her house got burned to the ground. Do you believe that story about a fire-breathing dragon? Or do you think she's just a hysterical crazy person who is either lying or delusional?

I loved the look on Jonesy's face when Ripley told him he was staying behind.. "Damn right I'm staying here! I'm not stupid enough to go through all that shit again." He was such a great actor. He said so much with just body language. I always thought they should make a movie in which Jonesy hunts xenomorphs and leaves the dead bodies on Ripley's doorstep. Aliens: Jonesy's Revenge.

"Aliens": Third Officer Ripley has been found and taken to Gateway station with a Xenomorph-size case of PTSD. What will the "Weyland-Yutani Suits" make of her blowing up the "Nostromo"? It looks like you're watching the theatrical version, which I saw in 1986 that left me with a question. 7:41 Ripley shows Sgt. Apone and Cpl. Hicks that she isn't a "front office paper shuffler" like Burke, but a working class dog, like them. 8:03 This is an airliner towing vehicle turned into an Armored Personnel Carrier. 11:36 Ripley is able to "get close, quickly" to Rebecca, unlike the female Colonial Marines. A reviewer of the time said: "Sisterhood!" In 1990, I bought the "Aliens Special Edition" Laserdisc(!) and verified a suspicion that Ripley had been a parent. 13:53 Vasquez passes Drake a spare fire control unit for the Smartguns, so they can continue to support the squad.

  • @TheRodentSama

Great story of PTSD. Cameron based the script on Vietnam, where soldiers are suffering mental health issues, and still go back into combat for a second time. The Vietnam thing also carries onto the plot of a high-tech force fighting a low-tech enemy and losing badly. If you notice as well that Ripley has an arc in the movie... going from a broken, PTSD suffering wreck... To a badass who doesn't even hesitate to go into a Xenomorph nest, to save a child that's not even her own. She's still arming up when in the elevator because she's in the **no-f%cks-given, protective-mother maternal mindset**, to save Newt. Cameron seriously knew how to write female characters. Sarah Connor in his first two Terminator movies was also fantastic. Edit: Just wanted to add, at 15:34 in the vid when you were talking, that scene in the movie you actually hear a squeal in the background. That was in fact the Queen. Yup, the Queen's initial introduction actually goes completely unnoticed by the audience. Cameron also made the movie with only 6 Xeno-suits. He said "Filmmakers can film the fall of the Roman Empire with 3 extras and a bush, I can film hundreds of aliens with only 6 costumes"

There are alot of trivia behind this movie either from making of documentaries and from the novelisation. 1. The reason Ripley got Hudson to access the computer for schematics blueprints etc is because he is the tech of the squad as mentioned in the book, so she got him busy doing what he does best to calm him. 2. The innards/shell of the APC is from an Airplane towing vehicle from London Heathrow airport which was so heavy that they had to reinforce the floors for the scenes inside the atmosphere processor as it was an abandoned power station in the UK which has been used in movies and TV. 3. The special edition added scenes showing more about Ripley and her lost family and explaining about the face huggers in the colony and talking about the big Momma alien which they called a queen to reflect bee hives.

16:35 "How are you the leader of this team?" Even in the US military branches today, all branches require officers to be college graduates. Annapolis, West Point, and the Air Force Academy, as well as many universities across America, all offer Officer Training Programs and the students who graduate those programs are placed as low-ranking commissioned officers: Second Lieutenants (Army, Air Force, Marines) and Ensigns (Navy). Some people who get this training have former military experience before going to any of the academies, but many do not - a kid can graduate high school and go straight into one of these officer training programs and graduate as an officer. After graduation, the officer is assigned a job leading a group of military personnel. Hopefully this officer figures things out and becomes a great leader. Most do. Some don't. Almost always, except in times of war, the fresh, inexperienced officer is not leading his personnel into highly dangerous situations. During World War II, Vietnam, etc., this kind of thing with new Lieutenants really did happen, and it wasn't always a good outcome. So this is very believable that Lt. Gorman here is a fresh graduate put in charge of this team. Maybe if these guys didn't get this super-dangerous job right now, Gorman could have learned over time and become a decent officer. He never got that chance because here they are.

In my Cranky Old Man opinion, Cameron crafted 2 of the greatest sequels in sci-fi film history (next to The Empire Strikes Back). This film and Terminator 2. Both had elements of surprise, jump scares, heroics, bad assery action and heart. Both flicks multiple times through out (on every watch) gets me in the feels. And they both changed films with their special effects. Although I am not a fan of Avatar, the man knows how to make a film. And these two films are just damn perfect. This was my fist viewing of your channel and thank you for an enjoyable time. Great commentary with the perfect reactions to scenes and well done on the editing. Which I know is a bitch & 1/2 to do. It should be studied in film schools to show how to build suspense and anxiety. Even just the opening scene where the ship is waking up inspires a sense of dread. 9:40 "The area is not secure! WTF dude?" Yes, the area is secure. It is impossible to secure an area in the sense of "not even a fly can get in or out. Maybe a construction crew with a few hundred men and a few shiploads of steel and concrete could build an impenetrable fortress. But that is not the military idea of the word "secure". To the military, "secure" means two things are both true: 1. We have thoroughly checked the area and there are no enemies here. 2. We have posted sentries at every point of entrance so if any enemies try to attack, we will know about it and fight them off. Sure, a powerful enemy might overpower the sentries, or a sneaky enemy might find another way in, but that can happen anywhere, any time, on any military base that has ever been built in human history. Until that happens, the area is "secure".

Ellen Ripley is one of the best characters in the entire history of cinema, she is the perfect hero, with exceptional charisma, who does what needs to be done and without any need for powers or other kind of magical stuff. please, don't spoil the good memories and good feelings that these two movies gave you by watching the other movies after these, if you want just watch the 2004 movie "alien vs predator", which is not bad at all, the other movies either are garbage (in part or in whole), or simply ruin what was done with the first 2.

Hi Caroline!😊 It took them 3 weeks to get from Earth to the planet LV-426. That gave them time to examine the "Face Huggers". As we find out later, Carter Burke sent them to the Alien ship without warning. Yep, that is Michael Biehn who played Reese. He was the boyfriend for two female action heroes. You really don't want to go on to the next film, IMO. Many people were disappointed in the story for that one, and it is rarely reacted to. I don't know about anybody else, but my ultimate follow-up to aliens would have newt and Hicks grown old, living in a post Alien War universe. Ripley is dead somehow. We don't find out until the next movie. But newt wants to find out how it all started since it was too young. Hicks is a lieutenant colonel. He is a grizzled old man with a badass eyepatch. Hes grouchy because he has numerous health problems which keeps him out of the field Newt is too old to combat the old man but she still gets frustrated with him. She considers Hicks to be her father and hero. She doesn't allow anyone to talk crap about him.

Its unfortunate that you didnt see the Special Edition. That's the only way to watch Aliens now, especially after Alien Isolation. To me, Aliens is arguably the greatest sci-fi and the greatest sequel ever made. It's a contest between Aliens, Terminator 2 and The Godfather Part II. The first Alien is a great, suspenseful and terrifying thriller. One of the best. But Aliens is the Citizen Kane of the action / sci-fi / horror genre. Sigourney Weaver shouldve won Best Actress. Thanks to James Cameron's writing and Sigourney Weavers acting, Ellen Ripley is one of the greatest, strongest, most iconic female characters ever put on film. Her Ellen Ripley is right up there with Sarah Connor in T2 and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind Sorry, SPOILER ALERT. Both versions of Alien 3 are a big waste of time. They destroy all three main characters in Aliens. They replace Newt and Hicks with the most unlikable characters imaginable. Heck, some of them even try to assault Ripley. And we're supposed to care if they live or die? No f**king way. And in the same movie, Ripley spreads eagle for the first ex-con she sees. WTF? And they showed absolutely no originality by making an Alien born from an ox.

  • @madgeordierob7890

Do yourself a favour and watch the Special Edition, which has several extra scenes that really improve the movie (I actually can't watch the regular theatrical version any more, I feel like I'm being short changed). Do yourself another, bigger favour by never watching any of the other movies in the franchise. Alien3 starts off with a massively flawed opening sequence that totally undermines the ending of Aliens; Alien Resurrection is just a terrible film; and Prometheus and Covenant only succeed in destroying any mystery that the original movie still held.

Much like T2: Judgment Day, Ripley returns to LV-426 because her dreams are too traumatizing. "NO FATE"🔪 Sarah shoots Dyson in order to end her nightmares. There are so many parallels between the two movies. Hicks and Reese are both bitten by a girl while trying to save them. Our lead Protagonists both lose their respective kid down a giant mechanical wheel, Sarah sends John down on purpose, and Ripley loses Newt down one, having to rescue her, etc... They are simply the two greatest sequels ever made! Hats off to Mr. James Cameron 🧢🎩👒 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

This is the last alien movie. If you hear about number 3 or any other sequels, that person is lying to you. The truth is that Ripley adopts Newt, and between inheritance, and decades of interest on Ripley’s accounts, they live happily ever after, even opening a puppy rescue centre. Ripley marries Hicks eventually, and a repaired Bishop lives with them and also helps with the puppies. Do not watch alien 3 or any of the rest, they are not real, again, just lies and rumours. Don’t even google them.
