I have a lot of different brands but for the money i like the gray pneumatic impact sockets

Good advice as always. Pick according to your budget or willingness to spend. If fit or failure becomes an issue, go up the line. I have a mix of tools. I have some absolutely top flight stuff and I have some disposable trash. But it all works together for me. And I work on just about everything. Did it as a professional for a few years. Just for myself and fam/ friends now.

I love this channel. Been watching you a few years. I like the format you use: the unedited, single take videos because it’s like we’re there chillin with you. Feels real that way.

Only time in the past two years of me doing automotive DIY I broke any socket was me using a pittsburgh chrome socket from their 51 piece set (goes as low as $15) with a breaker bar on lug nuts. It just split and then they gave me an entire new set.

Excellent video. Besides cars, I work on old tractors and farm stuff. SAE is a must-have for me. I'd say that today the cheapies aren't so far off the name brands.

I’ve went through three sets of impact swivels sets from Pittsburgh. Each time the spring would come loose and send the socket flying when using a 3/8 impact . I did notice that harbor freight switched manufacturers over the years which may have been why you haven’t had the same issues, also seen manufacturing changes with the Pittsburgh ratcheting wrenches when comparing them with an “identical” set from harbor freight for anybody who might be wondering . Just sharing some info

If I were starting with nothing I’d buy hypertough from Walmart for basic stuff thats what I did in the 90s with their popular mechanics tools they sold then. Eventually bought a set of Blackhawk tools from carquest. Made in USA at the time and have always started with cheap and found a decent mid grade and a few high end things at the end of the day it all comes out in the wash

I bought my first 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive sockets in SAE and MM and ratchets from Sears back in 1987 and gave them to my brother in 2004, all were in perfect condition and working with no defects then I got into SNAPON, MAC and Cornwell then I started getting into PROTO, Williams and Armstrong tools at a cheaper prices.

Something to note. The impact rates sockets are a “softer” metal. The chrome sockets with some variance are harder and thus more brittle. That’s why manufacturers recommend against impact use. I’ve never seen one shatter but I hear it can be knarly!

I see both sides. A good consumer brand - by whatever metric you judge that by - will do good. As you work in the trade, the weak points will show themselves. I use a lot of stuff from ACE hardware and Menards at work and the only thing ive had to splurge on was a Fluke voltmeter and Proto hex keys. At home, im looking at name brand brake line wrenches - brake lines are the bane of my existence.

i have several pittsburgh 3/8 deep color coded sockets and never had one problem. However i love the milwaukee deep set with the flat ends and their wrench sets

I switched to impact sockets for everything. I “upgraded” years ago with Sk chrome sets and was blowing through them like crazy. Cracking and rounding them out. Impact, haven’t had any issues. I use the cheaper sets purchased off Amazon as well

I basically have 5 sets of sockets/ratchets: one in each of two garages, one in my basement, one in my RV, and one in my truck. Two are old made in USA Craftsman, one is new Craftsman, one is Pittsburgh, and one is Stanley Black and Decker. They all work. I have been using some of the Craftsman sockets since the mid 1980s. I don't wrench full time but I am very much a DIY person. I have a set of 1/2 inch Craftsman impact sockets that I have run for 20 years that are still going strong. I would say you would get good service out of any of the sockets from reputable companies, whether made in USA, Taiwan, or China.

When I was an auto tech I was a Snap-on snob. I hate to say that but it’s true. I now work in the industrial field repairing presses and furnaces and I now buy Pittsburgh, craftsman, and husky. I have learned the money in my pocket is better in the snapon man’s pocket.

I think the biggest thing for me sockets wise is how well can I see the fkn size markings! As long as it's a 'mid- high tier' socket and lifetime warr., thats what it comes down to. I bought the GW 163 pc set and like them, but I honestly wish I'd have gone Tekton when they were a little less money for those bigazz #'s! I suppose the availability of sizes/singles comes into play as well... I have the full lineup of GW impacts as well and love them (CroMo, chamfer drive end, etched & stamped, nice finish) what more can you ask for? T? All that said, I'll likely never use 1/2 those sizes realistically lol Lookin healthy man! Thanks for the vid!

I am huge fan of Sunex for impact socket sets. Great mix of quality and price. I have 300 some odd craftsman set from the 90s and it’s served me well. Tekton is my go to for wrenches. I have a lot of Snap-On and Mac tools as well. Others that I have Mayhew, OTC, Lisle, Gearwrench and Makita.

Justin Dow.. I have some Pittsburgh 1/2 drive impact sockets and have been running them for a while now. Haven't had any of the break on me. They are a lot harder to get on and off of the ratchets and/or impacts. Maybe they need to be broke in more.

I'll say I agree with you for the most part, personally I run 3/8 impact because I find I like to use a 3/8 impact more often and I personally just trust impact sockets more than chrome but honestly it's splitting hairs. At the end of the day all that really matters is you have the tool for the job. The brand matters a whole lot less than just having it

I used really cheap sockets when I first started out in the early 1990’s. They worked until I had a corroded fastener and those sockets loved to round the fastener. However, modern cheap sockets have rounded corners and engage the fastener on the flats not on the corners. This makes all the difference. The I have a set of the colored Pittsburgh sockets (extra set) that have most of the color worn off and they have been great. Of course specialty sockets (swivel) have been hit and miss on.

Great video filled with truth and experience. I think tolerances go out the window when you’re dealing with rusty fasteners and for this reason I think an sae set is extremely handy

I really like the grey pneumatic duo sockets, they are thin like chrome sockets but are impact rated.

Big difference in quality with snap on verses harbor freight. Depends on what you want to spend verses how fast you want to go

I just use impact sockets

I don't use my tools every day professionally, but, as a home mechanic I've always had the best luck with the mid range tools. My experience is the cheap tools will only hold up to abuse a couple times before breaking, the mid range will last quite a while but will also break. Depends what is the best value for what you do.

They all break under regular use I promise. Socket fitment and ratchet "feel" is entirely subjective. I keep a set of SAE chromes for the reason Justin stated. No chance I'd pay the prices Snap On is asking today. They're nuts.

This is the age old question I’ve never really found an answer to this as a mechanic.

I hear you on the sockets, have a old greatneck deep 1/2" impact socket set used it for 20 years only broke one 19mm on a honda crank bolt, now have the weighted socket for that purpose, I have the same usa impact craftsman 1/2" short socket set never broke one same for 20 years

There will be a time when that snap on socket in deep or shallow will be the only one that fits in there. A deep/shallow bogo is the way to go plus mids

I am a snap on. Mac fan ,but I find tools at yard sales and storage auctions found my hundreds of tools there . Bought a snap on tool box for $100 yard sale find .

Know this….if you break or lose an Icon wrench or socket, Carlisle is an exact replacement. Whoever makes Carlisle is making Icon

In my opinion, buy most of your tools in the mid range and you'll be happy. I advise buying the cheapest tool of anything you can find, unless its suppose to be a throw away. More often then not, you get stuck with the crappy tool, keep it around because its not broken yet, but get frustrated everytime you use it. Easier to just take the wallet hit up front. Snap on sockets really are not worth the money. I've owned sockets from every top brand, and snap on are really unimpressive in terms of tolerances and design and yet one of the most expensive.

The more sockets the better just get all different kinds never know when you will run across a situation where you need it, My bosses have been wrenching non stop since 1967 lol they have all the old snap on to prove it, and the buisness.

tekton prices have gone threw the roof. kind of a bummer

I have blown apart 2 of the pittsburgh impact swivels on jeep compass rear hub replacements so finally got the icons and haven't had an issue. the only downside is they aren't as low profile but still work well.

All impact swivels break, I've broken half a set of the Snap Ons. Any of the pinless ones are good but again they all break especially on hubs. They're dangerous honestly

Me to I still have all mine from the 80s and 90s and they hold up great.

Honestly you can’t beat the Quinn sets for the price, life time warranty with convenience to just walk into a harbor freight store and get a new one. If I was to start all over again I would just get the Quinn set and call it good.

SnapOn probably makes the best sockets and wrenches. As an advanced DIY'er I cant justify the price. What sets them apart for me is the

Imo, any normal cheap chrome sockets (attached to hand ratchets) can last a long time without having any issues with breaking. I bought a Walmart set of sockets about 10 years ago in a cheap tool kit, and they were like $15, and I actually still use them to this day because there’s nothing wrong with them. Now when it comes to impact wrenches or any battery/air powered tool, then you need to spend more money on quality sockets that are chromoly steel, which will not snap but bend instead of shooting a flying metal shrapnel at you or something else. Hand wrenches cheap will work. Electric/air/battery tools, you need more expensive. Just my two cents.

This is a subject that REALLY needed the spotlight and this is the perfect creator to bring it. Thank for mentioning Chris. I really miss he and Amy

Good video lost my 13 mm on my 3/8 impact so I replaced it with a 10 year old craftsman and it’s been doing the job

Those Matco’s are called “pro nonslip”. They have become my favorite sockets. I’m surprised they aren’t more popular!

Matco is an odd brand. They don't make any tools. Everything they sell, someone has to make for them, yet they're just as expensive as SnapOn, sometimes even more. The only thing Matco actually makes is their tool boxes. Add to that, its rare to have a reliable Matco truck come around every week, so its understandable that they're not as popular.

@@AT-wl9yq if you want American made Matco tools you are better off going to eBay and buying Armstrong except a lot of these sellers recently are trying to really tax on Armstrong tools

Great vid. I find the Tekton 3/8" standard chrome sockets (which are the same as HF's Quinn) a little long vs. the Icon (which is essentially the same length as SO). I use the Tektons as a mid-length set now.

In the rust belt of the Midwest I would say it’s worth it for the tool truck. Not for every socket or wrench set in your box but when you need it worth it to have a good set. I would say best bang for your buck for cost would be the grey pneumatic duo or gearwrench.

Im in the rust belt. I rarely use my snap on wrenches. They fit too tight. Fighting the wrench on and off the fastener wastes a ton of time and irritates me to no end.

I have had to get more large sizes in the last month than I have used in the last ten years. On a John Deere garden tractor frame and deck and a Swisher brush cutter buy large size SAE set of wrenches and socket just whatever brand you can afford. If that's all you use them for they will outlast you.

Years ago, doing lots of intake manifold jobs on GM 3400, 3100s, there was one bolt that I had to borrow a long reach Snap On socket from my boss. My mid-line socket was just too think to work. Its a rarity and 98% of the time a Craftsman level will work, but once in a while it doesn't.

I’ve broken almost every tool I’ve ever bought…. Who can warranty it fastest I’ve been waiting months for sockets from the trucks, it would behoove you to get real nerdy with electrical because big wire repairs and harness jobs are $$$

Warranty on the trucks is why i stopped using them unless i absolutely have to or they have a great deal on something. I always hear "youre paying for the service!" If using a socket out of a $20 set for 3 weeks while i wait for a replacement for one out of a similar set i paid $400 for is a service im good. I waited weeks for tools off each truck at the same time, got tired of excuses and bought a bunch of "lesser" brands for my main hand tools. The only thing i havent found thats comparable is is torx sockets. I havent had a chance to buy the gearwrench set though. I was going to get them awhile back but ended up having some health issues. This isnt 1995 when the only place you could buy tools was either sears or one of the tool trucks. There are so many great tools out there now at a fraction of the price. Everyone knows tekton has you send a picture and has a new one in the mail the next day but ive had several other companies do the same. I reach out on facebook and have a replacement a few days later. Gearwrench makes better ratchets than any of the tool trucks at less than half the price. I love gearwrench sockets and other tools too. Snap on cordless tools are hot garbage and 5x the price of milwaukee. Matco cordless tools are better than snap on but still more expensive and not as good as milwaukee. I bought a second earthquake 1/2" air impact because coworkers were constantly borrowing it when their truck brand wouldnt get something loose.

I have two small chrome 90t and 120xp gearwrench black Friday and two days after Christmas deals a 74 pc complete set of deep and shallow well sae and metric sockets and breaker bar,tekton set and the main crash or junkyard set when I need it will be a 194pc husky brand mechanic tool set and the gearwrench 1/4,3/8 sae and metric mid length sockets in chrome to help the husky set and the 32pc set of Pittsburgh combination sae and metric wrench sets gave like $19 for those wrenches

Biggest difference is if you lose a SnapOn tool , you Cry . Lose a Garbage Freight tool , you Laugh !

i had a husky 19 mm deep socket fail on me undoing a head bolt on a lada using a ratchet i have tryed so many different sockets and i usually have multiple around if i have to sacrifice one by hammering on a fastener to make sure it comes off i will after being in the game you learn what sockets you need to upgrade

Every now and again a cheapo some how fits better, I personally think the 14mm 9/16 conversation is the worst has the most slop compared to the 13mm 1/2, 3/4, 19mm etc

I've recently been given a collection of various tools, including sockets. I've had 2 split removing tightish bolts. Junker, no name sockets.

Id say Carlyle are at the top for a non truck brand. I like certain tools for different reasons. I favor very quiet and smooth ratchets that dont sound like crickets. XP120 pretty much takes top honor for that, but i also own the newer SK 90 3/8 ratchet and that thing is silky smooth quiet and the gear/pawl mechanism the beefiest I've seen! I love the new Craftsman V series sockets. My new Icon 3/8 General service set is pretty sweet!

Sadly, I think Gearwrench has changed their design on those impact swivel sockets and not for the better. I’m a hobbyist and I’m to the point where I’ll pick stuff up just to have nicer stuff. You’re opposite me. I see no reason to grab SO electric stuff. Gearwrench is kind of all over the board. They still make stuff in Taiwan and it’s noticeably better in fit and finish than their China made stuff. That said, the 230-ish sets are decent and typically mostly Taiwan made. For someone just starting out, they could do well by starting with a Quinn set and upgrade in the future. I’m pretty sure it’s largely Gearwrench stuff. I’ve gotten good at finding good deals on Icon tools. Set of metric 1/4” chrome deep sockets, missing the 8mm, I got for $12. 🤷‍♂️ I think it makes a lot of sense to just get impact sockets for 1/2” unless you need 12 point for some reason. Far more likely with the chrome is for the chrome to flake and slice the crap out of your hand. In my field though, chrome bits would be a non-starter.

after wrenching 30 yrs non professionally but regularly i switch most of my hardline tools to snap on. i used to be a snap on hater just because of the price but then i started using them and for me, it was better than what i was using which was mostly usa made tools of all brands. i bought them off of ebay, local pawnshops and buy/sell websites and paid no where near retail. that was about 6-7 yrs ago but now people want dang near retail for used, beat up sets/tools but i still see deals on ebay every now when im scrolling looking at what i dont need. lol. the fitment is better and they definitely are a better tool. each to there own though. thanks justin.

Craftsman extentions SUCK. Used some 1/2” extentions once on an andoe rod in a water heater. No cheater bar notiing just muscle. Went to use another job the balls broke. For the price of those tings not one time pricesz

Swivels are best to be professional but all my other sockets are HF or old craftsman. Sockets are the easiest to lose and I’d rather just buy a new cheap one.

I’ve seen it time and time again where the new techs are more concerned about not looking like a noob than actually learning the skill. My nephew just graduated Wyotech I tried telling him he doesn’t need the snap on set they give out as discount. His biggest concern was not looking stupid. I digress. I use everything under the sun. And tapered off on buying snap on. Just not worth it to me. There are definitely better cheaper options.

I’m only average 6-10 years older than younger mechs I’ve met. I can tell you most of the ones who bought tools off the truck are now gone. They cared more about the look than the job. If I train someone I tell them you just need what is versatile and what is needed for the job. For what one snap on wrench set gets you, you can buy 5 different wrench sets which will allow you to do more jobs.

So it’s been my experience that some fellas with the sweet box and beautiful snap on tools are dumber then a lemming. The mechanics in my journey with the home made box set up and cheapest tools is the smartest mechanic in the shop. Often! Not because of their tools, Because they were fantastic mechanics and were there to make money not spend it. Young men have some self control in the rape trucks. Debts are heavy.

Got some Snap on stuff for cheap otherwise i run the icon set i picked up.....cooled off on the ratchet collection.. Are you going to talk about ratchets soon?

Buy the cheapest you can, put the rest into Bitcoin. Thank me later.

I have Pittsburgh deep impact sockets in Metric and SAE (from when they sold them in the tin trays) and they are still smacking on buts and nolts without any problem. I've had them since I was 17, im 30 now. I don't have a swivel socket set. I've been using a Pittsburgh swivel adapter. Gets the job done. But I'm thinking of purchasing some ICON swivel sockets. Seems like a quality product. Also I use Husky chrome sockets, and they work fantastic. The best part is they go from 6mm to 22 mm no skips (I brap on them with the impact and haven't been brapped back at 😂). It's hard for me to justify spending more money on tooltruck tools when the hobofreight and holmes depot tools get the job done just as efficiently. Awesome to see another person in the field bring exposure to the younger techs and maybe even older techs that the "manufacture name doesn't determine how effective and efficient you are as a tech" and that you don't have to go into tremendous debt to be in the automotive industry 🫡.
