Yes, part-time MBAs are definitely worth it, and in many cases are EVEN BETTER than full-time programs from the point of view of hiring managers!
This week, Angela Guido goes over the reasons why going to business school part-time can be a great idea, what to look out for in choosing a part-time MBA and what tradeoffs you may be making in going for one.

I applied to UCLA Anderson, Berkeley Haas, and Kellogg. All of them allowed part-time MBAs to recruit with the full timers (I am pretty sure NYU is the same case). All of the schools said as long as you can get out of work to attend recruitment events then there is no reason why you cannot recruit.

Love this content! What if you already have an MBA from a low tier school, would it make sense to do a part time Executive MBA from a top 10 program?

This is a tricky one. Schools tend not to like double MBAs. I would actually recommend contacting the schools you are considering and chatting with them about it. They will tell you the honest answer!

This is great content! My question is, do students have access to the same fellowships and scholarships as full-time students?

Hi Big Mike!! Thanks for the kind words. The short answer is no. The longer answer is that not just anyone gets "access" to fellowships and scholarships. Schools award them strategically based on the quality of one's application. They tend to have more to distribute to their fulltime classes, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to get a scholarship or fellowship to a part-time program. We have had clients get unsolicited money from part-time programs before and it all comes down to how your statistics line up with their priorities and the quality of the application you submit.

This information has been incredibly insightful for me around the significance of Part-time MBA programs. Initially, I harbored the belief that these programs held substantially less value in terms of opportunities and networking compared to full-time programs. I wonder, why do some of the top MBA schools opt not to offer Part-time options?

HEY Maurice!! I see u!! :) Good question. I guess it's mainly a matter of applicant pool size. To study part-time you need to be nearby. So schools in big cities have a captive applicant pool to draw from (notably, Chicago, NY, LA, and SFO have the strongest ones). In smaller cities and towns, they likely wouldn't have enough students to fill a great class. This is my guess.

Would admissions look down upon a candidate who applies to both the full and part time programs at their school? Or would they be more likely to then only accept that candidate into part time as they see they are willing to join that and it’s less competitive?

I'm always concerned about the latter in this situation. You give them license to determine your destiny when you do this. I usually encourage people to go for the one you want first. And if that doesn't work out, then you can always apply to the other one in the next round.
