I’m not in the woods often. But my leatherman comes in handy all the time. My biggest regret on a regular basis is leaving it with my keys and wallet too early in the evening. The pliers and screwdrivers are always handy at home, in the office, in the garden or even at a Christmas party where one of the tables had loose screws. It doesn’t replace job specific tools but having it on hand every day definitely makes life easier. SAK can replace most multi tools but the pliers get used all the time. I like mastering all the uses of the leatherman so I don’t have to carry a fixed blade, pocket knife, needle nose and everything else. Great video as usual!

The wire cutter on a multi tool is awesome for opening Christmas presents. So many kid's toys have zip tied the toy to cardboard. At the holidays my family members always ask for my Gerber to open gifts. Parents, children, siblings, nieces, nephews all want a pliers with a wire cutter!

Sooner or later, it gets old being the go-to guy when most grown-ups should have sense enough to be equally prepared. I’m not exactly proud of this, but I once yelled at someone for not bringing water along on a hunt and refused to give him a drink to teach him a lesson. I could’ve got the point across anyway while giving him a drink.

I "ALWAYS" carry a multitool, pocket knife and often times a fixed blade. I have been carrying a multitool for many years military, contractor and hunting, camping, fishing. It is indispensable in my opinion! Screwdriver bits come in handy for in field weapon service.

Yes. I could see that but you would need that 20 bit set that is generally sold seperatly. At least for my rifle. But last i looked that was only 25 bucks roughly. So a good investment if you have a use for the star and hex head drivers.

One key point regarding the survival kit is the "hidden C" ... redundancy. The Wave kept on your person provides you with full redundancy for essential survival tasks, even if you get separated from or can't reach your bag. I've replaced my wave with the free P4. My P4 belt pouch carries a ferro rod and a mini flashlight, as well. Great video!

A multi-tool was an official part of my Navy uniform. I've literally carried one on me everyday since the late 90s. I always have at least one pocket knife on me, usually two, and that's not including the fixed blade knives I carry as well. My Multi-Tool isn't always the best tool for the job, but it is usually a reasonable standby.

In the woods, the multi tool is less useful, but as an EDC in all environments (at home, on the road, at the lake) , the multi tool is indispensable. I use it all the time and I avoid multiple trips to the tool box. One tool you didn’t mention or emphasize is that little bitty, intsy teensy screw driver in the multi tool. It is really helpful in dealing with replacing batteries on GPS, or a range finder because those screws are so small. But most of all, it is essential in adjusting the declination on my compass. All other screwdrivers are massively too big. And since my haversack isn’t cluttered with various single-use tools, I can carry more graham crackers, hersheys chocolate, and marshmallows. So, my Wave+ stays on my belt and my Haversack is freed-up for life supporting pleasure items…and this is the first law of survival…die happy.

I avoided carrying crappy multitools. My edc was a folding lock blade knife for years. Basically all my adult life I've had a knife on my belt. I saw a guy on FB selling a Leatherman Wave in the original branded leather sheath for 50 bucks. I grabbed it and man I have not looked back. This multi tool has quickly become my edc. The blades are laser sharp and I am all about the functionality this one tool provides. I never would have thought I'd be a multi tool guy but here I am.

I carry a Leatherman Charge + every day. In the woods I use both the smooth and serrated blades. The serrated blade is good for any fibrous material. The most common trash I find in the woods is old fencing. Fence wire is a very useful material if you have a way to cut it. Also, tin cans and plastic bottles become more useful if you have a multi tool. Screwdrivers are useful for working on a gun. , fishing reel, stove, 4 wheeler, etc.

It also depends on what you're doing outdoor-wise. I'm an avid angler, so something like my Wave like yours, the needle-nose pliers are more useful for hook removal than a larger, blunter set of pliers. Also, having eye glasses on at all waking hours, the Wave's eyeglass bit would actually be a survival tool for me if I was out and about and had a glasses malfunction. Again, for me with fishing, having screwdrivers to repair a reel makes sense, same with the file to sharpen hooks. It's a personal preference thing, I guess, but if any of your tools fell out, having a backup in your pocket or belt is comforting. Is a Leatherman saw going to replace a good handsaw? No. Is it going to replace sturdy pliers, a fixed blade or quality folder, real screwdrivers, real files, etc? No. But for quick things, it's great, and like you said, good for just EDC. I'd NEVER go into the woods with just my multitool and hope for the best, but I'd never go into the woods without it, either.

As others have said, the multi tool is useful in everyday life and not just a consideration for when out in the woods. You will be surprised the number of times some of those gadgets come in handy around the house or in the shop, since most likely you won't have your haversack handy in those situations. I was never a multi tool user until I decided to see how handy it would be "just to have" on my person. I have certainly been surprised. My multi tool of choice is the Leatherman Free P4. Just another perspective on the topic.

The multitool and SAK are both good for: * Lightweight and "light duty" backups of tools you have in better forms, just in case * "Filling out" your toolset with tools that you might use sometimes but don't want to lug around in their full, heavy versions * Other little odd jobs that digging for "the perfect right" tool would take longer to do than just reaching into a pocket and taking care of it with a "good enough" tool. It's a "lightweight and convenient" chest of "good enough tools that are on your person."

Liked the video. My 2 cents. The linesman pliers probably weigh more than the multi tool. Stick a fire steel somewhere in your gear and a multi-tool on your belt and you don't have to carry that huge Murse around. If the gear is a tie, size and weight push the multi-tool into the win column. If you KNOW you will need a specific tool, then take it. The multi-tool is there with most of what you need when you need something unexpectedly.

The multi tool is a great option, but for me it's more about having my own handmade stuff. I feel like it'd be 10x easier to lose the Leatherman than the bag full of tools, so in my mind the bag wins every time. The major difference is durability. The handmade tools are typically overbuilt and designed to last a lifetime, most multi tools I've experienced are weak in comparison, although the stainless is attractive.

I have two Victorinox knives in my EDC, a Tinker pocket knife and a Classic SD on my keyring. The Tinker has both flat and Phillips screwdriver blades and the SD has scissors, so that covers most of my small tool needs. About the only thing I'd add for a longer than overnight stay in the woods would be pliers, but for that I'd probably go ahead and grab a multitool. For about the same weight as a pair of pliers I'd have backups for most of my other tools, which is a good thing. (This all goes in my pockets or on my belt. I use my haversack for bigger stuff.) The reason I never switched to carrying just a multitool is that sometimes I need two tools at once. If I need pliers to hold a wire while I tighten a screw with a screwdriver, a multitool isn't going to get it done by itself.

On cycle touring trips I used to carry, and use needle nosed pliers in my bike tool bag. Now I carry a Leatherman Mini and use it. Off bike I sometimes carry a SAK Huntsman ( really an old Forrester) with scissors and saw. The saw is pretty good for making poles and staffs. Only problem with multitool is when you need to grip on a bit and work on it, eg file it. A bag of tools is more effective than one mulltitool but who carries that everyday On a very long tour I took both Lman and SAK( + small food knife). The Lman Mini is a half size version but with full size pliers.

Pocket knife daily(except at work as a security guard,we can't carry weapons but I have my fists for that 😂) then a belt knife, saw and axe in the woods, like you this Dan is more into traditional gear, fast forward (or reverse 🤔) to two years ago I was gifted a Gerber multi tool at your school and have carried it in my haversack since, I have only mostly used the pliers and did use the saw for scraping my ferro rod like you showed us. I have so many items in the Coalcracker Bushcraft tool and repair kit to use- the awl, gimlet, needles etc I don't need a multi tool. Couple things: being on a budget (always) mine is a Gerber Truss, pliers to undo knots, pick up hot items, saw mainly for notching, find the awl to be very good striker for ferro rod. File they could replace with something else, scissors are there I guess if needed.

You might check out a tiny multi tool like the leather micra. It’s scissors based, so you wouldn’t be doubling up pliers. They have tweezers, a fingernail file and flat screwdrivers (which in the woods are useful for prying). They are also so light and tiny that you wouldn’t even notice them until you need them. They have a lanyard hole, so I find it’s nice to attach them to something else like a lighter where the extra grip area makes both tools more useful.

For context, my bushcraft/hiking EDC is Tinker, saw, ferro rod, sharpener (ferro & sharpener both wazoo neck version, unless doing an overnight, then a bigger ferro rod), fixed blade, s/w metal H2O bottle, cordage, and tarp/poncho. When Im in the woods for hunting or bushcrafting the 110 mm Victorinox Hunter is my go to tool.I dont miss pliers but I will sure use the saw and the awl.. When Iam on a camping trip though, a multitool with pliers,or a set of stand alone one, will be a must . The duration of stay, the cause of trip, the weight of the gear and the weather must always dictate the careful selection of gear in my opinion. There is no a fixed- do it all +-recipe.

I have my Gerber with me every day in an urban setting. For bushcraft - I can honestly say when hiking I have a knife and my pouch with some stuff, and finally an incomplete Gerber (I broke it over years of abuse - sorry - so this one has no file, and no scissors and some of the screwdrivers have been destroyed as well) - and I can see why you might not want or need a multi-tool in the woods if you carry everything else with you individually - and those things do the job better than the tool - how often have we seen a screwdriver needed in the woods. At most or carry it as a backup in the bottom of your kit if one of your other tools goes missing or is broken. I think if you hover in or near an urban setting, you should have one, keep one in the car etc. - but I think you're okay Dan.

I don't find myself using screw drivers in the woods for bushcraft and survival stuff; however, if I'm thinking purely survival, if I need to do firearms maintenance, or fix something that takes a screw, like an optic mount, eyeglasses, whatever, I find a multi tool useful in those situations, or if you're in your vehicle a lot, not just woods stuff. I hardly ever carry my Leatherman with me in the woods but it does ride along in my edc bag, range bag, and in the car a lot. Sometimes a simple SAK is all I need and saves a couple of ounces.

In a pronounced irony, I bought my multi-tool (a Leatherman Juice Xe6, no longer made) with every expectation of using it in the woods . . . and found it profoundly useful for EDC in the city, instead! The scissors (though they can break) were the best beard trimmers in the world, the pliers & wirecutters came in useful for all sorts of craft projects, and don't even get me started on how useful it was at work: both knife blades, the screwedrivers, and even the corkscrew all came in handy. I'd even bought it by accident in the company's colors, 10-12 years before I even worked there! Maybe that was an omen. (BTW, Leatherman doesn't make multi-tools with corkscrews anymore; if you want one of those, you'll need a Swiss Army Knife.)

I carry a Leatherman Rebar in my pocket as my EDC, and either a Leatherman Supertool 300 or Surge in my pack. The reason is because of their robust pliers, which are probably the thing I use the most. Those are my top 3 multitool picks. I think the Supertool 300 is better than the Surge because it is more robust and cheaper, but the Surge is more versatile - i just don't think it's versatility justifies the price premium. For like $20 more, you can buy a Supertool 300 and a Rebar for the price of a Surge, so that's the route I would suggest people to go: one for the pocket and one for the pack.

Personally I think it depends on what your planning to do and where you live, for example urban/suburban vs rural. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan so pretty rural.I carry a Leatherman 300 rarely use it. Mostly because of where I live a axe, knife, saw combo works for 95 percent of what I need in a bushcraft/survival sense. Plus the price for a Leatherman you can buy a good knife and saw with out the gate.

The multitool is handy, not only for the tools it holds, but as a backup in case of a lost haversack or just a tool that has been mislaid. Someone said "Two is one and one is none." It is good to have that backup.

I think the weird saw is serrated edge. It's good for twine, rope, leather. For me it's difficult to sharpen though. I have 2 multi tools. One I keep in a bag the one that has extra tools like scissors I keep on me. I helped a friend move they didn't have a Philips to take apart the table to get it out. That was the 1st time I saw how useful it is but you are very creative so you wouldn't need it as much as I do lol

I think the lesson here has to do with redundancy. Two is one and one is none. So yeah, bring your field knife and SAK or multi-tool. And one other thing- if you have a haversack you're good for bringing both. If you have only your pockets maybe not-- how much are you willing to carry? For me it's simple-- the Swiss Army Knife- the Huntsman for field work and the Hiker for everything else like going to the store. The multi-tool goes in my car and stays there. Hardly ever take it with me unless it's to go camping. I'm not into building shelters when a tent will suffice and actually do a better job.

I’m in construction and carry a lunch kit everyday. That’s where my multi tool lives. I’m a supper and often do multiple job sites per day. To me that’s the sweet spot for a multi. A quad, boat, sxs, 4runner. If they’d just incorporate a locking aspect to the pliers like a vice grip!

Good points for sure. I keep a tool in my truck. I don’t have much use for it in the woods though I do take it with me mainly because of the pliers and less so the scissors. I use the Gerber multi tool for a few reasons: the blades are on the inside of the handle so the outside is smooth when using the pliers, the blades lock and the pliers head slides out from the handle with a flick. One hand deployment. I usually have a SAK with me which has a saw. The Trekker is my favorite with a larger saw and locking blade, plus it fits my Sasquatch hands well, and the one hand opener is nice for my arthritis too

Nothing is better than carrying the right tool. Just remember the muti tool was built with the mindset that you are carrying just common light tools and gear on you. You can't beat the concept of how versatile it is. .it sure beats trying to carry a toolshop.1 pound of equipment VS 150 pounds of equipment. If you are working out of a truck the right tool is important, when say out in the field and you just have what's in your pocket, the multi tool is an easy carry and I recommend it as edc for everyone. At work in the hospital sometimes a pair of pliers and a screwdriver are great to have but , not easily or practical to carry.

I've had them all from Leatherman to SAK and the Victorinox MultiTool is hands down the best MultiTool out there. I remember when MT's first hit the market in the 80's coming in every configuration known to man but the Victorinox is a must have..Gerber makes good stuff but I've had those blades fail on me and I've put my V'nox through hell and back for over 20 plus years and it's still like new...Good luck

I will say, this was a good approach. I think we carry more than we ever use and gravitate towards what works. So sometimes we repack and that is the time we need what we took out.... Side note, needle nose pliers are handy and quite different from lineman. So I would have rated that a win for both sides and a loss for both sides in head to head. Glad to see you going strong in 2024. Need to see video or two of the adventure truck out on an adventure....please.

When I ran a ranch I always had my Leatherman on me but I used my morakniv basic 511 10x more often and carried both. Being up on a roof or working on a generator they both came in handy but the 1/8" full tang blade on that mora was invaluable. I've continued carrying it for the last decade and found myself not needing the multitool anymore. The pliers are really the best part of any multitool and if I think I'm going to need those I just toss my needle nose in my pocket before I go.

I’ve carried a Leatherman super tool since 1995, the original and now the 300. I’ve experimented with other edc options, but the multitool keeps coming back and is here to stay. I use a thong with the sheath so everything’s hanging from my belt and not wearing out my pocket, which keeps it concealed and frees up space on the belt. This tool, a belt knife, and a sufficient chopping tool make me ready for nearly anything.

I'm not a woodsman like Dan with all the woodslore. I'm just a former boyscout and somewhat creative dude that works in retail in a Urban environment. I carry a custom built Victorinox of the discontinued Yeoman model. (Effectively a compact Explorer.) My day to life doesn't require pliers or wood saws. I do need a blade, Philips and Flathead screwdrivers, Scissors, nail file, tweezers, and along with my failing eyesight a magnifier fairly often at work so the Yeoman covers everything I need during a standard workweek. However... a survival scenario is going to be outside of one's standard life. You'll have situations that may require adaptation. So if I were to answer the question "Should one include a multi-tool in a survival kit" I'd say yes. While not perfectly suited to every task a good multi-tool like that leatherman wave has the ability to stand-in for any tools you may loose or have break. It can be secured to a belt so you have it on your person in the event you get separated from a bag or pack. If you happened along some abandoned bit of civilization... it might allow you to fix or adapt something you might salvage. A multi-tool is that back-up bit of kit you have in addition to dedicated tools. That said... I get what Dan is saying about why he doesn't normally carry a multi-tool in the woods... because he does use those tools and doesn't want the additional weight on his personal as he has what he needs for most scenarios in his haversack. It's basically the same reason I don't have a pliers based Multitool on my person. But... just maybe having tossed in a vehicle, or stashed in a weatherproof container out in the woods with emergency supplies ... that might good be good in case of emergency need.

Depends on the person. Many of us carry one on our person daily anyway. I've been carrying a Leatherman since 1990. Everywhere. I've always got a SAK in my left front pocket. I typically have a fixed blade on my belt unless I am going to church. Sooooooooo, since many people already have a multitool on them, adding one to a survival kit isn't necessary. *_AND YET_* I have one in every toolbox, tacklebox, gearbox, haversack, backpack, etc. that I have. All my automobiles, 4 wheelers, and side-by-sides have an inexpensive multi-tool in/on them. Almost in EVERY place that I have a multi-tool, I have a MORA Companion with it. I used to think I might be weird for that, but I have met sooo many other people who do the same or something similar that I no longer feel like an outsider. Flashlight, MORA Companion, and multitool held together with two Ranger bands is standard kit for a lot of people for vehicles and packs/kits/bags etc.

Hey, Dan, great video! I am a music teacher by day and carry my Leatherman wave+ every day. I can't tell you how many times it has saved my bacon, from fixing/adjusting instruments to snipping off the occasional student hangnail with the scissors. Just an FYI, the weird saw you mention is normally called a serrated blade, but tomayto-tomahto. I love your content and hope to participate in your school some day.

I don't carry a letherman in the woods. I carry a regular pair of pliers. A good pair will cut wire. When I am not in the woods then it is a nice tool. The serrated blade doesn't get used often, but if I have to splice a radiator hose or I need to remove a rubber exhaust hanger then it cuts through them fast. I do like the scissors but I have a pair that fold I used for fishing. Actually I had two and I keep the better set for every day use. A multi tool is great if you aren't carrying regular tools or have them near by. I knew a guy the had a pouch added to his saddle skirt for a multitool and it work great for that.
