Is a 1997 Mac PowerPC OS9 still usable in 2019?

Комедия

177 Is an Apple, Mac PowerPC 9600 still a usable computer now? It's running OS 9, which wasn't the best OS Apple came up with. It wasn't even a multi-tasking OS. Apple was in real trouble back then.

I have found that a G4 is the oldest Mac that can still be functional for me today. I have an old Pro Tools rig running perfectly fine on a G4 running OS9, and it is still a tank. Runs great, with low noise, and boots up about as fast as a current Mac. If you have some old PT 5.1 TDM files you need opened and converted to a modern format, Im your guy. I also can dump from ADAT, Tascam DA8, 1/4" reel to reel and 4 track cassette. I specialize in bringing life to old projects in forgotten formats, but this is just a bit too far back of a machine for seriously professional audio. It would be perfect for doing some MIDI sequencing and maybe some 2-4 track projects. The very first studio I worked in (1997) had an 8600. We took a step back moving to that format, because we could only stream 4-6 tracks at most in Opcode Vision Pro through a SCSI Jaz drive; before, we could get 8 tracks on the ADAT, but the editing capabilities were just so cool. I still remember how happy we were when he moved over to a G4, and we could track all of our MIDI as individual audio files, taking away the need to load up all of the patches and effects for a remix. After that, I never used tape again until I went to college where we learned on reel to reel machines and tascam DA-8s, especially when working with audio for film synchronized via time code.

Don't use the latest versions of apps the old machine can run, rather go for the oldest ones. That way it's blazing fast. I could do graphics work on my Quadra 950 like it's 1992 again and it'd actually be faster for practical purposes than modern hardware. Boots in less than a second from RAM disk, starts Photoshop 1 in less than 1 sec as well, not much longer for Photoshop 2, and using file sizes still common for web is no sweat and near realtime fast.

You are the first person who said something similar to what I have been preaching to people. People want to use the latest and greatest, even on older computers. I have been saying the same thing about old PCs. People get Pentium IIIs which were the most fastest processors in 1999 and then they put Windows XP on those PCs. Then they complain that the computer is slow, not knowing how much of a resource hog Windows XP is. I kept telling people, do not put XP on Pentium III machines and put Windows 98 to experience the speed of the processor. You are completely right. Older software works much better on older computers as opposed to newer software.

My memory of doing graphics on a Quadra in 1992 was that you'd start a blur and then wait 10 minutes before you got an out-of-memory error. Also of paying a ton of money to buy 44 MB Syquest drives and usually having a hard time getting them back from the printer. Things got a lot better when the PowerPCs came out. That said I own 4 Macs that will run at least Classic Mode and none that won't, 8.6 was my favorite Apple OS.

It is not a problem to run the latest versions of applications. However modern operating systems and applications are much bigger than they were at the time these computers were sold. So what should be done is to run operating systems and applications that are suitable for the specs of the hardware. I recently installed OpenBSD on my Powermac G4 and I am interested in seeing what operating systems such as AROS or MorphOS could be even leaner on the same hardware. We have entered an era where we can run many different operating systems on the same hardware, so if one becomes too bloated and slow you just install another one. Windows, Mac OS and Linux have all become relatively bloated.

@@psychicist It is thought that hardware can support software updates for years to come but this is not the case. I had to process a 1.68Gb 32bit audio file on an old 2011 Macbook13 to which I installed an SSD but with OSX Snow Leopard. Soundtrack 3.x was able to process the file smoothly and in real time. The processed file was then transferred to FinalCutX on the MBP16 M1Max...using the wifi network connection between the two machines. This is to say that even if with patches and software forcing I could make that 2011 MacbookPro13 work with OSx Sonoma, first of all I wouldn't have the possibility to use Soundtrack because it is a 32bit app and the computer would be slow because the operating system would be too heavy for that machine (which still works fine on Hi Sierra). So it's true, you can use old machines but with the software designed for them. And you can still be productive, even if you are not connected to the internet.....

I worked for one the largest pre-press companies in the world at the time back in the 90’s, producing film and plates for anything and everything you might think of - lots of newspapers too. Like yourself, I’m amazed that we were able to do it. I certainly remember times when we would leave a Mac to save a DCS file in photoshop overnight, quite literally, or hitting enter in the morning on a Photoshop change and come back in the afternoon to find the grey bar still chugging across the screen. #memories 🙂✌🏼

OS 9 was super fast, super customizable with support for hundreds of third party control panels and extensions. Not to mention those cool OS sounds! The only thing I wished OS 9 had was protected memory (OS 9 is notorious for locking up your entire system when any error occurs and forcing you to restart).

I fire up my IBM 43P 150 with AIX 5.3 (which was supported until just a few years ago, but Firefox is unbearably slow) when I get nostalgic, model m keyboard, roller ball 3 button mouse and all. KZread brought me back to this page when I searched for System 7 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I dug my 7100 out of the closet over the holidays, and it seems I have that same mouse, and the same problems. The four exposed screws on the bottom are simply not seen these days, but made disassembling and cleaning it super easy. I blew out a quarter century of dust and fuzz, wiped everything down with some alcohol, and lubed the axle ends with a teensie paint brush and some tungsten disulfide. A few days of use to break it in, and it’s good as new! I might even get the keyboard working in a couple more years.

Paul just seeing you open illustrator brought back so many memories. I was in desktop publishing for many years (don’t want to say how many because it will make me look old) and I worked on systems made by Crosfield and Scitex before photoshop and illustrator even existed. Those were the good old days when we had to retouch and manipulate images for printing (for example magazines including Newsweek Family Circle Child The New York Times and Brides to name just a few of the many we worked on) on these proprietary systems and we were paid well. I did transition to Photoshop Quarkexpress Indesign and illustrator as they phased out the high end systems in favor of the more affordable Mac desktops. The Crosfield and Scitex systems were anywhere from 500,000 to 1,000,000 a piece. I liked working on macs and I have never owned anything but macs however once Photoshop and Indesign where firmly established in the desktop industry it inevitably forced me to change careers after 25 years in that industry because my job was outsourced to India. So for me the Macintosh and photoshop is a kind of love hate relationship because I loved working in that industry but the pairing of the two forced me out of the job I loved so much.

As for the mouse issues, I think you need to clean your ball (that came out very wrong!) For sure, if you were using one of these things, you ended up drinking a LOT of coffee waiting for applications to open, files to render etc. Think how much money a company could make on pay toilets :-) You can always tell an old-time Mac user due to the wristwatch icon burned onto the back of the eyeballs!

The venerable PowerMac towers with their CD trays! Incredible technology never even seen before! Ha! Hi Paul. Thanks for the video. It just so happens that I am in a similar standing as the subject you covered. My wife has a 1998-99(?) G3-300 beige PowerMac Desktop from university days. We hadn’t fired it up in about 15 years and I have had to go through a number of steps to finally get it running. Now, for the Question... The current OS is 9.1. The internet software (2) versions: Microsoft’s I.E. 4.5 and Netscape7(?) have incompatibility issues with today’s security protocols. So, I was wondering if it is possible to download slightly higher (and protocol compatible) versions on to a thumb drive or CD and load them on to the G3. Would this work? Would using Claudzilla(sp?) be advisable? Also, can you provide me with a walk-through to confirm internet setup on the G3 is correct? I have an ADSL line from Yahoo, then connected to a wireless router, but I do have an Ethernet line (I believe, as it only fits Ethernet plug in slots.) which I can connect directly from the Yahoo router or I can try via my ancient Apple airport -also using Ethernet. I also need to figure out the pertinent ip or client I’d or whatever’s to make sure I address any flaws in my plan. Your thoughts/help would be appreciated. Jim

If I'm able to get one of these awesome pieces of late 90s tech I'll of course need to get a G3 or G4 upgrade card for it to even allow me to install OS X, but if that happens I'll be filming a video series on it... I hope I can do it soon. Great video!

@@keithyakouboff8755 It’s $50/mo, not “$32”, and a one-size-fits-all payment, regardless of how much you use it or how many apps in the suite you actually use. When you paid for discs you had the option to skip buying new versions for a few years, particularly if new features weren’t a value proposition. Adobe’s core graphics software has had almost no new must-have features since CC, so there’s almost no value added year to year and you’re paying $600/year, _regardless._ You do the math and figure out which product was fairly priced, and which one is simply a revenue stream.

What an evolution ! Where is this hovering Mac Pro that will be able to deflect asteroids away from the planet ?! Because with that thing, we'll be able to do something NEW with our damn computers. I was working at a Motorola PowerPC fab right before this came out. The 604e PPC CPU was such a good CPU. Imo, it was the CPU that saved Apple. I had this PPC G3 and I had a BeOS BeBox with dual 604e CPUs that Motorola loaned me.The 604e, the G4 with Velocity Engine and the G5 were all good consumer desktop RISC CPUs. But it was this 604e that made Apple’s original iMac and other G3 based Macs look fast compared to Wintel machines that year. I was mixing albums with Digital Performer on an AudioMedia II card. Jobs and the NeXT and Apple teams did a good job of taking System 7, and injecting the Copland technologies to make System 8. The Finder “multitasked” just enough to buy time until OS X could be released. Those were magical times at Apple!

Enjoyed the show very much. You have corrected my belief that most casual computer users could get by with an old system to do DTP, word processing and a few models on a spreadsheet. When you try it you come to realise how patient we were and just were so impressed we could do everything so quickly compared to last year. The move to the web has changed matters so much too. First, as you demonstrate without HTTPS certs you are doomed and huge efforts have been put in to aspects of web browsers that just did not exist then or not so important, GPU accelerated javascript compilers and layout engines to show all the junk advertising. A G5 quad is a noisy, powerful machine but even that is slow on the web. Running NextStep on a HP workstation really impresses until you load a reasonable jpeg and, ooops, out of memory. So yes, nice to go back and enjoy the experience once in a while but not for the daily bread.

I don’t miss the constant crashes and the slow speed, but I do have a nostalgic soft spot for the user interface, system sound effects, and various software I used to use. Even as a kid in middle school and high school, in the mid-to-late 2000’s, I was already feel a strong nostalgia boner for Mac OS 9. No different than how some PC users feel about Windows 95 and 98, I guess. The scrapbook and After Dark screensaver were especially highlights. I’m surprised OS 9 was also able to run some 3D games, the original iMovie, 16-bit lossless audio recording programs, and an SNES emulator without any frame skipping. I wish the modern Mac OS (or macOS as they newly stylized it) offered room for customizing the user interface with custom skins and sound effects, but I guess that’s what Linux is for. It’d be deemed too much of a ‘security risk’. I guess computers back in the day seemed more ‘fun’ and had more of a creative spirit. Even the Apple logo was a colorful rainbow. These days, everything is all about bloatware and features no one really asked for nor is able to turn off, while at the same time, trying too hard to adopt a look of conformist minimalism.

I installed Netscape 3.0 and even Mosaic from the packs I used for a Mac Performa. Some reason the dialup port doesn't work, maybe the remote port got corrupted. I do remember running Mosaic on some websites about 15 years ago, Yahoo loaded real fast as Mosaic ignored all the scripting. I still use MacDraft for doing diagrams. I save the files in TIFF, then open that with Photoshop 4.0 (bought at Weirdstuff years ago for $10 NOS). Then save as jpg. I also remember upgrading to OS 9.2.2 from instructions on the website accelerateyourmac. My mouse with a ball still works ok.

I’m thinking the security error might be due to outdated certificates. You could try to set the date on your machine to something close to the year 2000. If it’s set to auto-update, you might wanna disable that, so it doesn’t automatically go back to 2019. That might do the trick. Not guaranteed. Never used Mac OS 9. But...it might work. Anyway, this was a really fun video to watch. Thank you! :)

I prefer them both for different reasons, mainly swinging towards affinity for jobs as it works more like my brain. I just bought both as you can put them on a few machines and own them forever, so a no-brainer for me. This particular Mac was sold only for 10 months and this model came out in August but was superseded by the 350. The 9600 initially sold for $4,700 but was taken off the market because of a shortage of 350 mhz chips and because Apple was about to come out with the power Mac g3 Gossamer. There is ONE of these exact models for sale on Ebay today for about $350 including shipping. My first Mac was a Performa 550 I got at a garage sale for $50 where I had to turn in $50 in rolled pennies at various stores to buy it. I recycled it years ago and wish I still had it because one of my favorite Apple ][ games was running on it, Galactic Empire and that game for the Apple ][ was 13 sector and almost impossible to find now on floppy disk. I wound up with 21 Macs at one time and was running OUT of room. Friends kept giving me their Macs and printers when they would move out because they knew I was into Macs and Apples. I wish I had kept them. I wish I had kept one with OS 9 on it so I could play my older games like Civilization 3 Complete for Mac and Diablo 2 and Command and Conquer. I still have my Apple ][ E, ][ C, ][ GS, ][ + and an Integer based Apple ][ as well and 2 Imacs, a Macbook, and Ibook and a Mac mini and an Ipad Air 2.
