IS-3 Soviet Heavy Tank (4K)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This particular Soviet IS-3 heavy tank was part of a monument until a year ago when Ukrainian separatists managed to restart it and take it for themselves. Somehow it ended up at the museum about 6 months ago however since the Ukrainian government has regained control of the town it came from, it will be returning to its former role as a monument soon! Manufactured 1946 and as I understand is nearly completely original.

I find it utterly staggering that these incredible machines are still starting up and just resuming duty. We are told by the experts that wartime era soviet tanks were crude, cheap and unreliable. Suited only for the two to three weeks they were expected to survive combat. Yet we see faded monuments that have waited seventy blazing summers and seventy terrible winters, the endless rains and bitter snow, rise again, ready once more for those long-dead soldiers. Its little less amazing than if stone-carved knights stepped down from their mediaeval tombs and marched out of the cathedral, broadsword in hand. If nothing else they are a lasting memorial and testament to the hands that built them in those terrible dark times, the nameless forgotten faces that go unthanked.

Very true, T34 tank over few years went from 850+ parts just to 600 and production price from 360 thousand rubles to 125k something... they didn't bother advancing anything, only simplifying as it would considerably slow down mass-production. Also soviet tanks for same reason were a death trap, per knocked tank 3 crew members would perish, while on western front it was just one dead per knocked tank. Also didn't have any safety measures for keeping ammo inside - usually was absolute mess, wielding always was done hastily leaving mass holes where bullets and ricochets could sneak in, especially deadly was Molotov cocktails as single one could put everything on fire due to the gaps in armor.

Within an hour we had the tyres pumped up, a charged battery fitted and fresh diesel up to the injectors and it fired straight into life. We then drove it the 5 miles home haha. Stuff really was built to last back then.

Robert Strupe not exactly. But the reason many of these old machines still run after so long is because they were built with high tolerances in mind. However this meant some engines actually would run like trash straight out of the factory and others would last forever since the machining wasnt constantly accurate. Nowadays, with more precision and parts the engines cant really sit 50 years without replacing injectors especially. But newer engines do have less variability out of the factory making them also more predictable

Crude but immensely tough tank. I saw a IS III with multiple 105mm shell hits on the front glacis. They gouged the armor, but bounce off.

первые 207 штук ИС--3 были изготовлены и доставлены в Германию в июне 45-го. Против немцев не воевали, только позже 52 машины на параде в Берлине ездили. ( the first 207 pieces of IS - 3 were manufactured and delivered to Germany in June 45th. They did not fight against the Germans, only later 52 cars drove at the parade in Berlin)

What are those cylinder shaped metal tanks alongside the rear hull? One of them was clearly boiling or something? If those are coolant tanks for the engine, wasn´t that a weak point under fire?

  • @rodjarrow6575

this is not weak point under fire, because, cylinder shaped metal tanks for on the march large distances only, however, before the battle, these cylinder are removed from the tank. either they are empty.
