Is 1963-D Lincoln Cent Penny Coin Worth $14,500? Are MS67 Cents Really Worth Thousands?

Why is the 1963-D Lincoln Cent valued at $14,500 and why are many of the other Memorial Cents have values in the thousands of dollars? I try to explain that in this video.

Daniel- I too have been so frustrated by this PCGS and NGC hype! There are several motivations for The grading companies to show these inflated numbers. A big one is that some of their grading fees including cross overs and reconsiderations are based on %’s if the value of the coin in each grade. “ as established by PCGS and NGC.” So frustrating as people think their coins can actually be sold at these prices. Diminishes grading services credibility

How much cleaning should someone do to an older coin or any coin to see if it’s bern struck with a double die? If I use a toothpick with a light touch sometimes a bunch of gunk will easily loosen but too much pressure and the coin changes color and that’s probably not good but sometimes you can’t tell until you remove the crud.

I think/thought more about the vaules your talking about but in my mind those top prices like the 14000 for the 1964 was the auction record of the coin no nesseciarly the amount it's currently worth. This is why TPGs came up with the idea of making registry sets - they knew there would be OCD people wanting top position and would drive prices through the roof. Its the Beanie Baby affect. Hype, create an market based on artificial value (cracked out and re-submitted it might not get that grade!), people go crazy, the company laughs at every one behind their backs, and the people who get fell for it eventually lose their money when reality hits. Then they see they paid for snake oil and have just a nice looking 1963-D penny where a subjective opinion conned them out of their money.

You can see how they are smaller to larger errors as you go through them. It starts with a filled B and progress to a filled b and 6 then to a doubled 9 northeast. Should I separate them, have them graded as a group or divide them into groups. I can't imagine this ever happening? Then there's cac. I have no idea of the value? You said it there at the end,"it is difficult to find coins in MS67". I agree with you but NGC and PCGS do not. I have an NGC 55 Lincoln graded MS67 and its value is $975 with auction value being highest in '15 at $560(or PCGS in '16 of$999) and both just drop off a cliff thereafter since there is a pop of 90 and 45 respectively from a mintage of only 33million. I believe it is based on population rather than recent sales that dictates their(NGC/PCGS) listed value. Albeit $14k is grossly high like you said for the 63d with 2.3 billion minted but with only pop 3 it is still rare. Whether we think theyre (1)misleading with their value compared to actual auction sales, (2) optimistic that sales will meet their value or (3) or opportunistic that more submissions will be sent based on their estimated value, we still have to use all the info available( they provide the recent auctions sales) and make a reasonable determination of the quality of the coin(s) were grading/buying.

MS67 for many dates is hard to get, and PCGS pops reflect that, should have been more specific. I didn't mean any date but most.

@@CoinHELPu And like you said, pop numbers are inaccurate due to crossover as well since the grading companies want to be represented. Looks at the 69s DDO MS63 thats on Heritage in August. Was NGC then crossed to PCGS but NGC maintains their Pop1, probably would say since they graded it first

On the 64, I came across one in our collection that is positive match for the SMS. Can that be the reason for higher price? Just wondering. The SMS I think is from 64 to 69. There isn't that many. But, I have a Red MS 67 it looks much better than what PCGS has listed. So, that is what I'm thinking. Maybe? Just a thought. Photographing a 63 D Red now. Think the 1,300 range is good. But, great collections does get some good prices.
