Ironheart: The Legend of Ralph Earnhardt

Did Ralph Earnhardt actually win two Cup races? Ralph was a dominant figure in 1950s and 1960s NASCAR, with somewhere around 350 NASCAR wins. The Kannapolis Cannonball, Ironheart. While modern audiences view him in relation to Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr, Ralph was a racer with few peers in his time.

I feel very privileged to have seen Ralph drive at Shelby Fairgrounds. It had rained Concord out one night and they gave all the Concord and/or Metrolina regulars the time to get there. Another time they came due to the track owners brother (I think) had fallen out of the water truck and died and the race was cancelled at Concord or Metrolina. I do believe Dale was driving Hobby, a # 18 the same nights. Haywood Plyer was there also.

The genetics are incredibly strong in that family. If you look at Ralph, through his children and grandchildren there is no doubt that they are Earnhardts.

The only thing I knew about Ralph was from Lost Speedways, DALE The Dale Earnhardt Documentary from 2007 and ESPN's Biopic where he was protrayed by J.K. Simmons, yes THAT J.K. Simmons. This is probably the first documentary dedicated to the first Earnhardt and I liked it.

Ralph paved the way for people like Ned Jarrett, Jr Johnson and Cale's daddy to show them how it's possible to win. Not that it's a downfall, he made more money but maintained family life which was precious to him. He won more races than anyone that has raced! What a man.
