Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common cause of anemia worldwide...It starts as normocytic anemia (normal MCV) and then shifts into microcytic anemia (low MCV).
Causes include decreased supply (a nutritional deficiency, malabsorption syndrome) or increased demand (pregnancy, lactation, growth), blood loss is also a common cause (menstruation or gastrointestinal bleeding).
Clinical symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include pica, glossitis, achlorhydria (indigestion), fatigue, pallor, exercise intolerance, flow murmurs, and even angina.
Restless leg syndrome is associated with iron deficiency anemia.
Anemia can be classified as microcytic (low MCV; or mean corpuscular volume), normocytic (normal MCV) and macrocytic (High MCV).
The normal MCV level is about 76 to 96 fL.

    A 4-month-old child was anemic. His hemoglobin was 6.5 gm/dL with a hematocrit of 22.4% following a treatment or oral and parenteral iron. His MCV was 64 fL with a MCHC of 29.0%. WBC and PLT counts were normal. Differential showed a slight increase in monocytes (15%). RBC morphology was described as dimorphic (Hypo/Micro and N/N) with polychromasia and pappenheimer bodies present. Serum iron was increased and TIBC decreased. What are the key pieces of information presented in the case study? Hypo/Micro and N/N, with polychromasia and pappenheimer bodies present. 1. What additional testing should be performed? Genetic test 1. Given the age, do you suspect a primary or secondary condition? Why? r. 1. Assuming it is primary, how would it be classified?

    I still have to visit a clinic for a CBC test but I am almost 100% sure that I have IDA because I've been suffering from prolonged menstrual bleeding since December 2021, it last from 2 weeks to more than a month. I was prescribed a medicine for anemia and Vit C and took them for one month. Just last month, I started feeling shortness of breath just by taking the stairs and it never happened before even during hiking. I am also losing a lot of hair for the last few months. Then a few weeks ago, I just started munching on raw rice like I was eating some chips! I am actually eating raw rice as of writing this comment. I couldn't stop!

    Wow, this is an informative video. I am going to do blood work Tuesday finally to see if i am anemic. I was wondering your thoughts. I am 29, but since i was a teenager, I would have very bad cramping during my time of the month. I would sometimes black out due to how bad I felt during that time, and get extremely pale and vomit. Flash forward to my mid 20s and i finally decided to get on birth control strictly for making my periods better. Now that they are better, I don't feel horrible during that week like I used to. However, I do still feel constantly tired. I am very pale. I do have restless leg syndrome. Unlike many other who experience coldness, I seem to be more sensitive to heat and experience hot flashes often yet my hands can remain cold as I experience this sweating. For the last few years, I have felt my face looks "sickly". If I would ask others, they might not notice. But for me personally, I feel something is different. My skin seems aged and sallow at times despite the fact that I am a health person, take vitamins, and my family doesn't age quickly. Other days, my face seems great. It's like I never know what tomorrow will bring in terms of it. But sometimes my face just looks lifeless. Even my eyes which are brown, just seem empty and hollow. I have gained dark circles under my eyes that do not change regardless of diet or sleep. I hate looking in the mirror at times and seeing dry skin or wrinkles before I am even thirty. I looked more into this and i have read that improper nutrient absorption from having something like anemia can cause sallow skin and other effects. If i am anemic, do you think when i begin treatment of iron supplements and all, my youthful glowing skin will return? I used to get compliments on my skin and it's glow all the time. Now it seems washed out and lifeless, despite having even better care for it these days. I want my energy back. I am a little confused as to why i would still be experiencing all this when I now have weakened periods due to the birth control. But I guess the anemia is still present even on a regular day.

    I had iron deficiency back in summer 2020. The main like basic iron deficiency disappeared sometime around September October. But however sometimes I can still get like really dizzy for a few minutes. But that’s not my question. My question is can amenia give scar and affect you for the rest of your life cuz whenever I run or do any high pressure activity or participate in PE I immediately get tunnel sight, feel dizzy and it feels like I’m flying and I can’t feel my body and my sight gets blurry and bad for the rest of the day. Would appreciate a developed answer!!!

    Hi, i hope you can respond to this, because I am quite worried. Can iron deficiency anemia be inherited? Im very nervous because I’ve had anemia (diagnosed) since I was 6 or younger ( I cant really remember), and I’ve always been told i’ve inherited my ID anemia from my mother. Ever since I was diagnosed I was told to eat a lot of iron rich foods which I did but i still suffered from the symptoms. I ate things like liver, iron rich cereals, and grains- it improved, but it wasn’t gone. It just became manageable. The symptoms get worse when I’m stressed though, so my mom bought me iron supplements and I started taking them when i was 12.. So I guess it got quite better, or I was just distracted by partying a lot. Now that I’m studying in high school and focusing solely on studying(hella stressful) my anemia (im assuming, i cant go out to a hospital to check but based on the symptoms i feel now and last time I was diagnosed Im pretty sure it is) has been the worse its ever been. It was hard to get up from my bed, but its hard to sleep. I can’t describe it but when I walk or even move I feel like my body drops? I feel like i was fainting but I am not... its a weird sensation. I don’t crave too much for Ice as I used to (i loved that) but I have this obsession with chewing on my fingers. Also yes the obvious symptom where I meet jesus every time I stand up too quick. All in all I feel what I can only describe my body being depressed. (i am doing great mentally!! I used to suffer from it though.) I am 14 now, and I am studying about genetics and teacher asked if we could share some genetic disorders we inherited. I described my “inherited anemia” to my teacher and she said there was no such thing as an inherited ID anemia like mine, and ID anemia is supposed to be cured after taking iron supplements for at least a year. I even double checked with my mom! She told me she thinks I inherited it from her (no matter what me and my mom do, our anemia pops back up once in a while) as I was showing symptoms unknowingly even when I was young (always cold, very pale baby , refused to get up etc.) if its not iron deficiency anemia then... what? I can’t find much sources online...I was definitely diagnosed with ID anemia based on my cbc and symptoms.. (My mom was quite poor (my dad died when I was 7) so she didnt have the best education... and we live in a poor country so please dont be upset if my mom did a mistake,, she is really trying her best)

    I currently have iron deficiency anemia, but it only affects my sleep pattern. I can't fall asleep without being 'forced' awake again, followed by heart palpitations and of course the shaking by released adrenaline. I had a hb of 7,1 and my iron supply was an 8 (doctor said I had to be between 9 and 30). But the sleep pattern problem seems to be only me...I never had the other symptoms. I WISH I had those, because this is a living hell what I have now and nobody can explain it to me.....

    I'm looking at this to see if there's a possibility I've got anemia, and I've been struggling with this problem for some time now! Falling asleep is really hard because it feels like my heart isn't catching up, or I'm not getting enough oxygen and stuff and it keeps waking me up. I need to look into that

    @@SomethingWet Definitely check it out Milo! Its such a stupid symptom but ts only because of my grandad that I pushed at the doctor's office to go for anemia (he's had experience with it so he figured ask for a test) and he was right. I wouldn't have been able to detect the signs myself afterward either.

  • @mudraofwitches

    @mudraofwitches

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@monicadesita6374 I had no thyroid problems either, they checked even for diabetes. I told them to check for iron because I got a grandpa who's got experience with anemia so he urged me to ask for a iron deficiency test. I noticed that the problems falling asleep due to beng 'forced' awake again isn't exactly...the most accepted symptom in iron deficiency anemia which frustrates me as THAT was the key symptom along with the heart palpitations and shortness of breath. :/

  • @SomethingWet

    @SomethingWet

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@mudraofwitches for me, I'd say the shortness of breath actually is the cause of being waken up, as my body probably thinks I'm not getting enough oxygen and it wakes me up so I can breathe, and kicks in the adrenaline as it thinks I might be in danger, choking or something. I either wake up or I get sleep paralysis, which can be caused by poor breathing too sometimes. Shortness of breath and heart palpitations are common anemia symptoms from what I've read, and trouble sleeping is definitely intertwined with that, so it's weird it's not considered a common symptom. It seems simply like an elaborate combination of the well known symptoms.

    Medicosis Perfectionalis well it’s my own theory, when you go into cold water, then your heart rate will generally slow and constrict blood vessels with it. With iron-deficiency anemia, you usually get fatigue, which means your body can’t produce enough oxygen haemoglobin because of the low iron, obviously. So would eating ice cause all the blood to rush to the brain, therefore stimulating muscles? I don’t know, but the theory has always helped me cope with my anemia better, and the fact that I crave ice.

    Kale contains a lot of iron and I see its positive effects more than taking prescribed iron pills from the doctor. KALE IS AMAZING FOR IRON DEFICIENCY.

    My iron serum, iron saturation, and ferritin levels are on the very lowest end of the normal range, while the iron bonding capacity is at the very highest of the range, but my hemoglobin is fine. I looked into this and found that this perfectly fits LID (latent iron deficiency). Even though anemia isn't present yet, can you still experience some symptoms, such as shortness of breath, restless leg, and lightheadedness? I was diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency also, with levels at 23.
