Also unrelated, I love the fact that Iroh demonstrates stoicism perfectly, while also being a super fun, happy, emotional, jovial man. There's become a misconception often that stoicism is just "Not feeling emotions", or that it's little more than not showing pain, or that it's very serious and anyone stoic must be quiet and reserved. Maximizing positive emotions, and accepting that which is out of your control while focusing on what is, these tenets are absolutely compatible with a goofy silly character, and not just in a "They're a different person when they're serious" kind of way. It can be the core reason for them acting the way they do, and Iroh is the best example possible.

That's a great point! I sort of mention that in my Zoro video, but it was probably worth restating in this video. I don't think it is wholly unrelated

Stoicism doesn’t mean suppressing your emotions at all. It means controlling them and using them only when necessary.

I have found numerous characters from fictional literature, including Merlin, Gandolf, Rafiki the Baboon, Iroh, Don Juan Matus, Lazarus Long, Dr. Who, Albus Dumbledore, Josey Wales, Ten Bears, and I'm sure I've missed others, who I find to be grounded in a powerful traditional wisdom. Story telling is a powerful way of getting a teaching across. Look at the effect Charles Dickens had on Victorian England when people started reading about what other people were feeling, by telling a powerful story.

The teachings of stoicism are aligned with the teachings of the Tao Te Jing. Like Iroh said, "learn from many different sources."

3:46 The "He never says get rid of the positive or negative energy" line got me thinking about how as much as it gets discussed that "Oh, negative emotions are also important", and "It's okay to not be okay" and those sort of things, as much as I appreciate those sentiments because it's true, I do think there's a misconception that people should be striving to see the negative emotions as something good (in an overall long term sense), rather than as something that we cannot control and should not fault ourselves for even if it's bad. I can't say which is true (or both) and to what degree, there is merit to the lows making us appreciate the highs more, and being able to empathize better from experiencing them, but I do think it's swept under the rug that it can be helpful to see them as something inevitable (and in the context of stoicism, uncontrollable) and focus on what you can do about it, rather than trying to force yourself to see them as something "good" which can be much harder. Everyone's an individual though so I'm sure one perspective would work better than the other for different people, so I think it's good to spread both concepts for that reason

Yo!, this video helped me finish some assignment I rushed to finish about Ethical Systems, a part of the assignment is expanding on what we understand about the Ethical System we chose by talking about a case in which it is used (as in, situtions in which the Ethical System comes in handy, or someone that believes in it that we can use as an example), I picked Stoicism, and as I was researching about characters in fiction that are Stoics, I saw in a Reddit thread that Iroh was mentioned a couple times, so I looked up more information, and I found you! Granted, I barely know anything about Avatar, but this video not only helped me figure out what, and how to talk about his beliefs, but also helped me discover your channel AND finish my homework! Thanks for the help :)

Surprisingly Zaheer was a lot like Iroh too. He learned the principles of airbending when he couldn't even airbend and it served him far enough to been the head of the Red Lotus gang until he was captured, but let him pick up airbending right away when he got it. One can say if Iroh was the avatar there would no doubt been no wars anymore, the four tribes would have been united under Iroh's watchful eye.

You made a good point about internalizing the loss you have and turning it into something good but forgot to mention that 4 minute short of Iroh going around town helping people. Near the end he says "Good birthday my son, if only I could have helped you." Showing that he internalized his inability to help his son and now uses that cultivated energy to help other people.

Bad thing happens in our life, we have too much media that tells us it's much more worst than we thought that will only make us think that bad thing that happened is worst than dying, that will destroy you from within. Let bad things happen to you, then make it seem like a joke or a prank then it won't hurt you too much or not at all.

A:TLA deals with themes of spirituality, nature, balance, morality, and humanity. I firmly believe these themes would’ve been weaker in the show without a character like Iroh. With honesty and wisdom, he brought the out the best in everyone.

Iroh is not stoic, he's taoist and youre confusing a few of his zen ideas with stoicism. Yes, there are overlapping ideas and if you've just read listicles they look interchangeable but they're not the same. Hellenic philosophy aims for Eudaemonia, zen aims for Nirvana. The Tao is about finding the path and these aren't incompatible but they are different. Look into it, you'll probably find it worthwhile.

Also, how could you put the yin yang on screen at 3:50 and not go, "hmmm maybe I should look into this symbol that DIRECTLY embodies what this dude is talking about". Instead you emphasize how this is clearly *stoicism*....? 🤔 You were so close, man. Yet somehow you sailed past the truth.

if there is something iroh was not ... is a stoic.... he was shaken by his son´s dead and lived the good life like an existential humanist.... seneca the great stoic advised nero to burn rome, marcus aurelius the great was an opium addict who raised neglected commudus, epictetus was an unexisting archetype that spoke of hapiness in bending the knee.... iroh was a game changer, an artist, an alchemist and creative... if there is something he was not, was a stoic iroh as fluid like water, not stoic like a gray boring rock

He's selling his Christian Spirituality book. Bro has probably never even laid eyes on the Tao Te Ching. The whole spiritual MO of Christianity has always been to identify spurious links to pagan traditions and create narratives about how this was always actually referring to Christ and now the true message has arrived so it's time to convert. He's doing the same with stoicism because someone else told him it's the Christian's approved ancient philosophy. He's dissecting quotes instead of reading an entire work to create a cohesive idea of the thing represented by the text instead of the text. It's funny cuz he puts the divided circle up at 3:52 but it doesn't occur to him that maybe he should look into that symbol he casually popped on screen.
