iRobot J7+ Roomba Combo Review! Industry First Fully Retractable Mop That Has Some Issues!

iRobot is a well known brand and many consumers have grown to love their well made products. They have always insisted that a mop and a vacuum be 2 different devices, that is until now.
They have released their first vacuum and mop combo and they are calling it the J7+ Roomba Combo which has an industry first fully retractable mopping plate that lifts on top of the robot to clear the thickest carpets and rugs. Other than this change it is almost identical to the older J7+ that is a vacuum only.
In this video I will put it though all of my standard endurance tests and give you some pros and cons so you can decide if it is right for your home.

I would love to see a competition between the J7 Combo and the Roborock S7 Max V and if you can, compare the Roomba to the Dreametech L10 Ultra and the Ecovacs X1 omni. I think the Roomba J7 Combo is overpriced for what you get. First, it uses a camera for navigation which is not as good as Lidar. Cameras need light to work which is why the Roomba has the light on the front. The suction and airflow are much lower than on other premium robots in this price range. For this price, you can almost get the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra, the Dreametech L10 Ultra or the Ecovacs X1 omni which are much more powerful and will clean their mop pads. The battery on the Roomba is also much smaller than other robots in this price range. I think Irobot has relied on their well known brand name too much and they have allowed themselves to fall behind, companies like Roborock, Dreametech and Ecovacs have gotten far ahead of them, and now with Roborock introducing their new S8 series with dual rollers, Irobot is really going to have to do some major upgrades to their products if they want to remain competitive.

I agree with everything you said above. They relied on patents and name recognition as well. Patents don't last forever. They had good innovation. The J7 Roomba Combo made me excited to have a lifting mopping pad that will clear any thickness of carpet. It is simply not refined enough for the price. Now they have likely locked up that patent. Dreame has something else exciting in the works. Stay tuned!

Great Review!!! I love how you do the reviews. I am subscribing. I just wanted to add that the LED light is not for navigating only to add contrast to the obstacles when need it. The robot still needs light in the room to navigate properly.

Thanks for the sub and the compliment Denis! That is interesting because when you turn off obstacle avoidance the light is still on when navigating, so I just assume it uses it for navigation especially when under beds and furniture. For a camera based system it does a good job. iRobot does not give much information of their robots and they are pretty hard to review because of this.

The truth is, if it is more convenient to have 2 separately, the problem is the space required by the 2 devices and their bases. My apartment is 75 m2, so it is a little complicated to have the 2 on the floor, but the combo you only worry about putting 1 device that would fit perfectly under a side table or next to the bureau

Yea Rodney that is right. When I said I knew why they did it what I meant is to drip it on the pads would mean they would have to route tubing up along those lift arms. That would likely cause other issues. In all of my testing I have never seen a vacuum suck up so much water in the rollers as this one. Thanks for watching and the feedback!

what kind of coverage area does this have before needing refilling? We have a relatively small UK house so might be enough to do an entire mop run before filling. I actually don’t have an issue with no mop cleaning due to the size of my floors and also we’d just wash the mop at the weekend and change it out. Many of the other mops with washing are cold water ‘rinse’ so not perfect either, and I think maybe more suited for larger US and other homes where you’d normally rinse the mop during a run - not so much for lasting multiple weeks (I think we’d not trust that anyway and just wash separately). Additionally most seem to have not ideal clean bases, other than the Q revo, so still evolution needed here I think

@@jamie.andrews Thank you that would really help. I can describe in 7 points (Sorry its long) --- 1) I'm having hard white tiles only with 2 small floor mats at fixed places, and area of 40 sq m total, comprising of 3 rooms. It is a dusty environment (no stains) if the window is open (very small dust particles that comes with air). I think a mop will wipe them off better. I have lot of furniture with some difficult to reach corners. No pets, no children. I would really like to use liquid detergent in the mopping liquid (anti baterial). 2) I want to save money on automatic emptying system if I can empty the inbuilt dust container manually every day (and run the device 3 times a day). Can you suggest / show what it reports as a full dust container ? 3) I love if it can mop properly after the vacuuming, I can setup vacuuming to max and mopping water to ultra if necessary. I dont care the noise. 4) It would be awesome if it can go below a big bed with legs of ~9.5 cm. Gonna be dark below the bed ofcourse. 5) If I can see the robot live feed remotely, that is added value (preferably if it has 2FA authentication and encryption for data privacy). 6) The most common brands in EU are Irobot, ecovacs, blaupunkt and rowenta (German). I was counting on "j7 combo" without emptying station. I can order and return if performance is unsatisfactory. I am curious if it would get a lot of marks during map creation due to the bumping it is going to do. Because then return is difficult (if necessary). Do you think it can create a map without having marks on its bumper ? 7) I am concerned about wiring at home. The reason why I'm not going for a 1800 W normal vacuum cleaner (220V) is because some switches are just 6 Amps except one of 16, I believe the input of these robotic cleaners is much less when charging. (Automatic emptying may be 16 probably). My parents don't prefer to hold stick vacuum due to old age.

@@jamie.andrews Thank you very much ! I got one more perspective. In homes with children or places where we frequently move small furniture like tables, and if rooms are small, someone suggested that it is better to buy ilife cheaper robots (approx 300 eur) and can buy multiple. These robots dont have mapping requirements and go around randomly. So after moving furniture it is not important to create a map again. It was told that with irobot, i will have to create a map everytime if I move a couch from one location to another. Would you kindly share any opinion on this ?

@@rajeshj8383 I am not a fan of random navigation robots. They are not very effective and are more headache than they are worth imo. Hmm that mopping dripping system doesn’t seem good, surely it sucking up liquid will damage the vacuum, maybe the filter manages to absorb any moisture before it gets into the system, but I imagine then the filter needs changing more. I have also seem people saying that these rubber rollers scratched their wood floor, I think hard dirt particles can stick to the rubber and then scratch the floor when the roller is spinning, have you noticed any scratches from the roombas, maybe look out for this or advise people the clean the rollers well to avoid this.

I tend to wonder how long before these lifting arms get broken. I have said for awhile that we need a robot that can fully retract it's mopping pads, but why not just have them lift straight up into the robot instead? Love your reviews, Jamie, but I wonder if you’ve had any of iRobot’s products long-term? My SJ9+, which I’ve had for little over a year, started out strong, but after successive “updates” has devolved into a dumb, unresponsive, non-working piece of garbage. This despite numerous emails and calls to iRobot “tech support”, which IMO is non-existent. Furthermore, being the SLOWEST of robots to map, it finally makes a decent map after days, but then several weeks or months later (after an “update”) the entire map becomes corrupted, after which you are forced to reset and start all over. These have got to be the dumbest robots on the market. I spent $$$$ on the SJ9 and the coordinating mop, and it is the biggest waste of money I’ve ever made on a home product.
