The lads might be a bit young to remember, but the reason for the cooker switch socket combination being banned was due to the cooker circuit traditionally being non RCD protected fixed equipment equipment. I got this lecture off an inspector 20 years back!

I don't think it was ever banned, just it was another circuit to require RCD protection as it incorporated a socket outlet

Greaat show, good fun! I have worked in England and rep. Ireland both for many many years and the rules are largely the same but the practises can be very different. You are supposed to be putting in isolators on your EVs, as they are fixed equipment just like a shower or oven but it being outside needs to be IP rated. We were also using RCBOs from the start which are now starting to be enforced in the U.K.

ireland used to copy the british certification and exams for electricians ,,when i was there years ago ireland wired to switch to switch and england wired light to light then to switch which i liked more i dont know what they do now

Regarding the DIN-mounted tool arm - presumably the UK regs would insist that we used one branded by the same manufacturer as the consumer unit. We all know that using an MCB branded differently to the CU will cause pixies to fall from the sky or indeed the leprechaun equivalent in this instance. You tell the kids today that the old Deutsches Institut für Normung was actually intended to be one and they just give you a blank stare; or is that a 'spare way' stare? Frankly I am loving the idea of taking your toaster into the Irish bathroom. Even better if we can put it under the bath. Still, we in the UK can pride ourselves that the loss of a PEN conductor may lead to the power going off, directing the average consumer to go direct to the new(ish) metal CU and lift the bonded metal cover....

I like the DC isolation on the Solar but I also don't like it. It means if your AC is out you're not charging your batteries for grid connected systems without batteries this makes sense. for Battery systems and off grid I kind of find it annoying. I think the better way to go about it is the communications break that one company has where the optimizers drop the voltage down to 1V.

i would never put tool holder on consumer units keep tools away

4mm is available ..imm htr switch is better visible.so you know that its been left on!..Irish have been using RCDs on water heater for donkeys...They used to have single pole main switch in consumer units,still see them.They have a removable fuse in consumer units.Also see double sockets without switch, never seen those in England.

Answer, both do it wrong!! Rule number 1. Focus on safety and electrical theory, not cost or labor hours! Rule number 2. Easier does not equal better!! Rule number 3. IEC/EN standards are the worst! Far too "liberal" in their ratings. They don't test. Companies self certify. That is just insane!! IEC ratings are almost always down rated by UL, because they test to worst case situations. Far safer, albeit, often more costly. Are your families lives worth cutting corners, saving relatively small amounts of money?
