Ceolann na Casaidigh an amhrán traidisiúnta 'Trasna na dTonnta'.I gcuideachta tá grianghrafanna do pharóiste Ghaoth Dobhair i nGaeltacht Dhún na nGall. ( ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaoth_Do... )
ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
Over the waves, going west, going west!
Good-bye to loneliness and to the distant land;
It brightens my heart and the sun,
Happy to be returning to Ireland!
I saw my sufficiency in countries far away,
Gold and silver, the wealth of the life
My heart rises in me with the break of the day,
And me drawing closer to the land of my people!
Over the waves, going west, going west!
Good-bye to loneliness and to the distant land;
It brightens my heart and the sun,
Happy to be returning to Ireland!
People of the West, they're the friends of my heart,
Welcome and celebration before me on every side.
Leaving this life I pray to the Lord
That it's with their ancestors in the grave I will be!
Over the waves, going west, going west!
Good-bye to loneliness and to the distant land;
It brightens my heart and the sun,
Happy to be returning to Ireland!

What a beautiful language this is. It would be an enormous tragedy if it dies out. A major effort needs to be made to revive the Celtic languages.

Labhrófar arís, tá súil agam.
For many many years the song that I usually sang in Scotland at family get togethers and New Year etc. was "Westering Home" which I understood to be a Scottish Song..I've just discovered that it probably originated from an Irish Gaelic song Trasna na d'Tonta from the Gweedore area in Donegal....Well my name is Irish and it originated in Donegal so looks like I came full circle back to my roots in Ireland...Our relatives and friends in Ramelton Donegal usually asked me to sing Westering Home but no one ever said it was the same as the Gaelic one !. "The Star of Donegal" was my encore !!!!

The Scottish Gaelic song Eilean Mo Chridhe also appears to be inspired by this family of songs, and is set to the same melody. Furthermore, the melody is essentially identical to the Scottish jig "O Lassie Art Thou Sleeping Yet" from Kerr's 5th Collection c. 1875, which now is sung to the words "The Muckin' o' Geordie's Byre" (and played as a fiddle and pipe tune under that name as well). There's so much trading back and forth here, it's hard to say who was first!

@@Robobagpiper O seadh, Is truagh nach robh mise 'an eilean mo chridhe, eilean mo ghràidh far an d' àraicheadh mi... This is sadly the only verse of this fine wee sang I know by heart, whereas I know the Trasna na dTonnta verses much better by heart, so when I sing this at seisiúin in Connemara or Donegal, I start off with the Irish verses and conclude with the Scottish Gaelic one - as a wee greeting as Inse Ghall na hAlban / à Innse Ghall na h-Albann!

Randomly remembered this song from school at 3am and I'm baffled that there's a trad Irish that's actually purely joyous and happy
It would be a great idea to have this as our national Anthem. Beautiful song and beautifully sung. Thanks for sharing.

Second verse: Muintir an larthair is iad cairde mo chroí Fáilte is féile beidh romham ar gach taobh Ar fhágaint an tsaoil seo is é a ghuím ar an Rí Gur leosan a shínfear i gcill mé Curfa (as Béarla) The folks of the west are close to my heart A welcome awaits me with banquet and cheer On parting this world all I ask of the Lord That it's with them I rest forever
How could Irish people forget this gorgeous language? It is a very beautifull and very melodic language. But today fewer and fewer people are using it, although the gouvernment is trying to save it... I sawed on wikipedia: Irlands gaeltacht areas cowered almost a half of the country in 1926, but today they are almost all gone. English language kills everything. :(

A similar song is Thugamar féin an Samhradh linn. If you want songs a bit faster and less quiet try An Poc ar Buille, An tSean Bhean Bhocht, Báidín Fheilimí, Bean Pháidín, Beidh Aonach amárach in gCondae an Chláir, Buachaill ón Éirne; Cailleach an Airgid; Cóilín Phádraig Shéamais, Cruacha glas na hÉireann; Dúlamán. And that's only up to 'D'. There are loads of songs available on the net. Listen to them on You-tube to pick the one you like best.

I love this song and would love to be able to sing it, but I have massive difficulty pronouncing a lot of the Gaelic words. I think I've got the chorus ok, but I can't get my head around the pronunciation of the two verses. Could anyone help and write the verses out for me phonetically?...
At my school we learned this cuase I’m Irish
wow✌
Buíochas le Dia...
lol happy St P's from Canada
nice
@Gaeilgeoir well, trasna does mean across, but when someone crosses the ocean we say they went "over the waves" or "over the sea" - so this is the best translation to keep the context of the phrase: travelling over the waves, far away from home, to a new country... from where one day your fat great-grandchildren will return with cameras and fanny-packs for St. "Patty's" day ;)
there is another version called Westering Home with similar musical tone, right?
i am doing it for my school
@2rilA9e that's great!!!
First verse Chonaic mo dhóthain de thíortha i gcéin Ór agus airgead, saibhreas a' tsaoil Éiríonn an croí 'nam le breacadh gach lae 'S mé a' druidim le dúthaigh mo mhuintir Curfa (as Béarla) I've seen enough of foreign lands Gold and silver, jewels of the world My heart leaps with joy at the break of each day As I draw ever nearer my homeland
